NCAA Tournament Games

My Picks for the play in games

Minn Duluth 4 Harvard 2
Harvard has yet to devise a way to keep Giguere in check. 2 games this year she had 1G & 5A. The last 2 games as a Golden Knight it was good night Harvard as she had 4G & 4A.
Giguere and Hughes get it done.

Quinnipiac 3 Syracuse 1 with an ENG.
This one will be closer than people may think.

Wisconsin 4 Clarkson 1
Much as I dislike picking this score, it is what it will be.
Clarkson in their last 12 games was 4-8-0 and went from 1st to 5th in the ECAC. They outscored Dart/Brown/Prin 19-4 with a 3-0-0 record. However, against Colg (2)/Corn(2)/Quinny(3)/Harv/Yale they were outscored 28-10 with 7 of the 9 games having 1 goal or less earning a record of 1-8-0. Just do not see them getting by the Badgers unless the hockey fairy sprinkles some magic goal scoring dust on their sticks.

Same, except I am pulling for Harvard, just to meet someone new in next round.

While I would be happy to see Katey Stone get spanked by the Gophers again, (Hannah Brandt wasn't good enough for you, eh?), I will be at the game and waiting to see the best team win. I think it may be a pretty even battle, even with UMD sweeping them earlier this season. This could be an overtime slugfest. Some good hockey this Thursday, and I hope there are plenty of fans there to enjoy it.

Sounds like UW 100%, trouble scoring in the big games, though UW has struggled against the lower end teams as well after injuries depleted an already thin roster due to the Olympics. I'm a western elitist, so I'm picking UW of course, but that is my heart and not my brain. Whoever wins, it will be 2-1.

The fighting nurses, in the past, have been a thorn in the side of Wisconsin (some for Minnesota as well) which Wisconsin did get some revenge for. Wisconsin, with it struggles against the WCHA's top teams much like Minnesota last year, has been battle tested. We will see if that helps in their matchup against the fighting nurses. I think it will as I am a Western Elitist as well. Wisconsin got back a couple of their forwards and they looked good against OSU so that should help. I like Wisconsin in this bracket. I think they have a good chance to advance to the Frozen Four.

Only the one time. Overall the series between the two is 4 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie in Wisconsin's favor.

That one was something more that a thorn, however. I still think about it from time to time...

BTNPlus schedule for Thursday shows Syracuse vs Quinnipiac and Harvard vs Duluth, and indicates both will be free. They must have the rights because the games are hosted at B1G/WCHA locations.

Saturday games involving Ohio St and Minnesota are also on the BTNPlus schedule, also indicated as free.

BTN schedule does NOT show the Wisconsin vs Clarkson game, but the UW web site shows a link for the game at the streaming service that had Hockey East games this year.

The word in past years has been that the NCAA does not allow anyone to charge for the streams of the early rounds. I wonder how the semifinals work, because they are listed as ESPN+, which is usually a subscription. I guess BTN+ is as well, so we'll have to see if they need to offer a free subscription like the WCHA used to have for the Final Faceoff in the days before BTN+ handled it.

Hope all of your pics are wrong, Vic. I always cheer for the underdog, as unrealistic as that may be.

Believe me I may have picked the games one way. I will be cheering for the ECAC teams. Just being realistic as to who I think will win. LETS GO TECH!!!!

If BTN+ streams a game for free, can you also see it later, or is on-demand viewing only for subscribers?

Good question, and I have no good answer.

I looked to see what was available from last year (I'm a full access subscriber), and neither the WCHA final four games nor any of the NCAA games are there. But last year was so weird with all NCAAs being played in the COVID bubble, etc., who knows if it is meaningful to look now. And NCAA final four was on ESPNU anyway.

Maybe the best 'plan' is to save away the URLs and then try them afterwards to see if they're blocked or available.

Wisconsin 5-2. Clarkson's high shots, low scoring has happened enough times to be a thing and they're prone to defensive lapses.

Quinnipiac 2-1. Syracuse can get good goaltending out of DeSmet and even though they were 1-5-3 against common opponents to Q's 8-5-0, they played most of those games close.

UMD 4-3. Just gonna quote myself "UMD and Harvard did play each other this season, both at Harvard so we don't have to rely on common opponents. In those games UMD handled Harvard pretty well. Sometimes when teams play each other a bunch, the lower seeded team will figure out how to press and keep things close. We saw this in the WCHA quarterfinal between UMD and Minnesota State. Sometimes the small differences become exacerbated as the better team locks in. We saw this between Minnesota and UMD in the WCHA semifinal. Hard to say which will happen here between non-conference opponents whose one series was a bit less important than a lot of the other games on their schedule."

Frequently the main (only) camera is set up such that the white coming off the ice makes it hard to see the puck. Tonight is normal or maybe even a bit better than normal.
Tonight is much, much better. The camera is usually so high and some sort of fishbowl lens that you can barely see the puck at all. When it is going, you have to go by how the players react to tell where the puck is. This is the first time I felt like I'm actually seeing a game from OSU.
