Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

There were times over the last few years (not this year) where I thought UW backed off the forecheck against UM too much and were too conservative.
Typical Wisconsin over the years, even the power teams, would play a fairly vanilla first period, and then they'd ratchet up the pressure in the second, particularly when playing out of conference. This year, they've seemed willing to go harder earlier, and pressure more than trap. I want to see if that holds today.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Colgate has very active Defense who get up into the play and create shots which will put a lot of pressure on the Wisco defense. On the other hand, a quick transition turns that into odd man rushes going the other way. I think this game is decided by whichever team comes out ahead on these plays.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

History can't repeat itself: Colgate men lost to Wisconsin in 1990 for the Men's NCAA Championship

I attended that game at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Colgate lost that game and several dismal years of performance followed. In contrast, we, among the' Gate diehard have been witnessing a unique set of citcumstances with the women's program over the past few years--potentially becoming an anomaly in 'Gate athletic history. A little bit of current history provides perspective.

The confluence of: 1. Upon hiring 6 years ago, Coach Fargo & Co.’s introduced a vision for a moribund program and has demonstrated an ability to develop/execute it step-by-step 2. the completion of the 40 mill. Class of ’65 Arena for the 2016-17 season became a physical embodiment of the vision 3.securing the buy-in of the elite players who embraced the opportunity as a mission ( Today's Seniors won 7 games as Freshmen ).

The confluence of these circumstances landing an athletic program in an NCAA Final Four is "cinderella-esque." I'd love to win this game. But, regardless of the results this weekend, "I'm good". Post mortems on subjects like " goalie Vandyk's performance against elite competition" ( or whatever else gets your attention ) will fade into dust for me. The real payoff for me lies in watching how the ‘Gate WIH ptogram skillfully leverages the elements of the success of the past 3 years into a catalyst for continued growth. That would be a pattern much different than what followed the Colgate men's Final Four appearance against the Badgers in 1990.

Sorry to diverge from purely technical "hockey talk."

I'm waiting to see how Colgate does with something that Minnesota never figured out: you're better off with a slightly disorganized breakout than giving the Badger forecheck time to set up.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Bowlby set a really nice screen on the Colgate goal. I'm not sure that's how Bucky drew it up.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Wisconsin dominated the second period and then came completely unglued in the last two minutes. A dumb checking penalty led to a disorganized kill where they couldn't get a clear, which led to another penalty, which led to a bit of unsportsmanlike conduct which could have gotten Steffen another two minutes. Bucky killed off the 2-man advantage but gave up a goal immediately thereafter. If they lose this game, that was the sequence that gave it away.

The call against Roque was legit. The call against Steffen was garbage.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Abby Roque picks up a lot of penalty minutes because she commits a lot of blatant penalties. She probably should have gotten five and a game for contact to the head there.

Got a real negative impression of her in last year's FF for pulling this same kind of crap and haven't liked her since. I see she's still at it. The story/excuse last year was that she played boys hockey and was used to rougher play. OK, fine, that's understandable. But I think she's had more than enough time to adjust. Just another bad attitude it seems to me.

And, (I don't know who the players were), how was it a penalty on Colgate in the first or second period when their player was standing still and the UW player skated into her and fell down from the impact?

Thought she was going to get a 5 minute penalty on the hit on the Colgate player. Probably should have been 5.

Wisconsin's goaltender not that sharp. Looks like Gopher goaltending.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Colgate has been having trouble all game long at getting any sustained puck control/pressure in UW's end.

(Teams in both games have not been able to get the goaltenders moving side to side in close).

UW seems more confident on offense with quicker decision making and better passing and their backchecking is relentless. Colgate can't seem to overcome it. Quick accurate passing would do the trick but Colgate's passing isn't that great and they seem to be starting to leak oil.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Double OT! First OT was all Badgers. Agree it was a dirty hit by the Badger girl earlier on, but would love to have all the games this year reffed this way.

Re: NCAA Semifinal, Wisconsin versus Colgate

Penalty tipped it the other way, gave us a chance. On to the ECAC finals (again)!!!
