NCAA Quarters, 3/10/12: Mercyhurst @ Wisconsin - One more upset? Why not!

Re: NCAA Quarters, 3/10/12: Mercyhurst @ Wisconsin - One more upset? Why not!

Not sure if it's an oversight or bad news for the Badger D, but Andy Baggott's article in today's State Journal does not list McKeough in the lineup.

Otherwise...It's a Great Day for Hockey!

Too bad the video quality for all four games today was/is so poor. Anyone know enough to explain why?

And kudos to the SLU-BC game for having very instant, full screen replay which unfortunately was entirely missing from the Cornell-BU game.

What an awesome experience. 1-1 tie, broken at the 8 minute mark on a very pretty shorthanded goal for Wisco. Empty netter seals the deal, but Mercyhurst posed a very strong challenge.

Official attendance was 2946, including maybe, I mean may.....be......... 35 of us Mercyhurst fans. This cowboy has no voice left from trying to chant "we can't hear you" and other fun loving chants to try to carry a little weight against the very big red crowd.

Hurst had plenty of chances.... nearly finished a 2-1 in the early minutes, hit a cross bar a few minutes later, loose pucks in the crease all night long. Impressed with the Wisco first line.....good speed, seemed to dominate when they had possession.

Not impressed with Hilary Knight, or with the remaining lines. Not impressed with Rigsby. If BC can match up with Wisco's first line and shut them down, I like their chances.

Not at all impresed with the general intellgence (or lack thereof) by the fan base. I can't believe how many times I got asked where Mercyhurst was from, or what state Erie is in. Do they teach geography in Wisco public schools? Seriously, bunch of backwoods ignorant hicks who happen to have some good sports programs to root for.

Anyway, a fun experience and I'm glad I came.

LET'S GO EAGLES!!!!!!!

PS.... shout out to Geena Prough! It was great seeing you, and I wish you continued success in all your future endeavors.

It was a very exciting game, but certainly the fears about Wisconsin not playing their best hockey certainly haven't been erased. Their offense is just really struggling to find the back of the net right now.

I would agree that Hillary is a big part of that, she is just really not on her game right now. Her Penalty Shot must have sailed 10 feet over the top of the net - it wasn't even close.

I can't agree about Rigsby though. The goal she did let by was a pretty soft one, but she made some pretty amazing saves throughout the game that really kept the Badgers in the game.

Disappointing night for attendance. If that was 2900, then it says a lot about how many of the regular season numbers are inflated by season tickets and suites, as I thought the crowd was still bigger than any regular season crowd except FtB. However, they've done much better in drawing people to the NCAA's before, so to see corners and ends so empty was disappointing.

I thought there was a very respectable following of Mercyhurst fans, especially considering the distance. Sorry, to tell you, I'm also frequently frustrated by the lack of hockey knowledge at Badger games, but its usually much worse at the Mens games. At least at womens games most people who don't know the game are with their families trying to learn it, while at mens games, idiot fans need to make sure that everyone knows they don't understand the rules or the game! I did hear plenty of "Where is Mercyhurst" questions, but that's partly your fault. Its just the third time this year that a team didn't bother to put their location in their schools name before coming to Madison! I will say everyone did seem to know where Erie was, so the fans around me weren't quite as geographically illiterate.

Onto Duluth - I'm expecting a rematch of the last time I made the trip to the Frozen Four - in 2006. I think we'll see a WI/MN battle again, although if there is an upset of a Western team, I'd say the Badgers are more likely to go down. The Gophers seem to be the unstoppable team that we're used to seeing from Wisconsin at this time of year.

It was definitely an entertaining game. At this point, I think the Badgers are what they are. Great #1 line, great goaltending (Rigsby is going to stop that one shot 99 of 100 times..just not that one time last night), depth at defense that will be helped out if McKeough can get back in the lineup and championship experience. What they aren't at this point is the prohibitive favorite as in the past. No shame in that.

Disappointed that the crowd wasn't bigger, but still had the biggest attendence of all the quarterfinals and easily outdrew the Gopher-Sioux game.

And to think FrostedFlakes called midwesterners elitist!

It's funny how you mention the ignorance of your fellow Americans (if you are American, doesn't really matter either way) who have no knowledge of where you come from. Don't feel so bad, us Canadians get it all the time. ;)

Re: NCAA Quarters, 3/10/12: Mercyhurst @ Wisconsin - One more upset? Why not!

Honestly, how is it some horrible wrong 99% of the UW fans don't know where Mercyhurst is located? I was guessing NY or Pennsylvania. It would have been helpful if on the info sheet for the game they listed where each school is located.

Merchyhurst played strongly for parts of the game and so did UW. Mercyhurst could have popped 4 goals easily if they could have knocked in back door rebound chances. This UW team is not the unstoppable machine of last year.

The student attendence was very disappointing, but maybe the 10 bucks went for booze instead of Badgers.

A lot of schools seem to be on spring break -- was UW?

Can't spell impressed and can't spell intelligence, and we're the ignorant hicks? Right.

There was also this gem: "I can't believe how many times I got asked where Mercyhurst was from..."

Most people in PA don't know where Mercyhurst is either....they might know where Erie is, if only from the standpoint of, "I hope I never have to go there!". But you would think intelligent hockey followers would know where both Mercyhurst and Erie are, if only because they hosted the Frozen Four last year!!!!

Re: NCAA Quarters, 3/10/12: Mercyhurst @ Wisconsin - One more upset? Why not!

Don't get me started Brooky. How many major sporting teams from Minnesota have won National Championships in the last 20 years compared to PA? NHL, NFL, MLB, NBA. ???
I hear it all the time...family in Pittsburgh. :)

Re: NCAA Quarters, 3/10/12: Mercyhurst @ Wisconsin - One more upset? Why not!

I was probably more disappointed more in the general public than the students. Outside the Fill the Bowl game, there were more students at the game Saturday than any other game this year. Being a Saturday night game with no other competing sports events in town, I really thought there would be a crowd of around 5,000 (like the Harvard game back in '07).
