Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.
We wondered before the season how the blue line would hold up, seeing as how they seemed to be a couple of bodies short. In the end, they managed to perform okay defensively, but seemingly at the expense of the offense, as they weren't as productive up front as one may have expected beforehand.
Not exactly sure how productive that Torpedo system was that was supposed to address the shortage of defencemen this season. It seems to have been more effective early on, with respect to offensive production, which is counter intuitive, (and possibly incorrect), in that the team was just learning the system and apparently there were times when it wasn't possible to use it due to injuries and illness, which might have been worse. Seems, as well, that the defensive side of the system continually improved but at the expense of the offence, as you mentioned...witness today's game. (That's entirely apart from the fact that that wasn't the real Haley Irwin on the ice today and that they've been without her for most of the second half).
I recall hearing Miller explain the rationale for it just prior to the beginning of the season admitting that the inherent weakness in it was that it will create more odd man rushes against you, (as Megan Duggin sort of alluded to in the post game interview tonight), but that she was confident that their goaltenders were skilled enough to successfully deal with the majority of those rushes and that on balance, it would create more goals for than against, so it seemed like a no brainer to her.
When your back is to the wall you do what you have to do. I'm not sure that there was any other choice. Additionally, if one is a proponent of the philosophy that the best defence is a good offence then this system would seem to fit the bill and in doing so, kill two birds with one stone. It sure seemed to confuse and create a lot of havoc for the opposition in their end in the couple of games that I saw early in the season.
At any rate, I think that this was the best game by far today...two superior talents on display...albeit one with arguably a bit of a hadicap who still made it anyone's game. UM's performance (and some may argue, the outcome) was a fluke in that they just had a bad day but unfortunately combined that with some real bad timing. Which is not to take anything away from BC...I was really impressed. But I just don't think that they have the same depth as UW, UMD and UM...my point being that if UM had had a normal game today, with BC apparently playing at the top of their's today, we may have had two superior games.
Mercyhurst/BU was a wide open exciting game but just not on the same level as the UW/UMD game...at least that's my take.
All that being said, I just don't see anyone stopping UW although Cornell or BU might make it interesting.
