NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

Please not Perrault...

Might as well save time and put 4 goals on the board for UMD before it starts...

He truly is a piece of $hit and Shannon Miller's toy..

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

UMD scores with 28 seconds left in the first...1-0 UMD after one.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

UMD up 1-0 over the Badgers after one for anybody not watching the free video feed. Very fast first period, one penalty per side.

The three straight NCAA games between these teams from 2007-2009 were all pretty well lopsided by midway through the 2nd period & onward. I'm thinking this one will be different, if only because the better team all season and host is trailing, and they just staged a bigger comeback against a better team last Saturday. 1-0 UMD after 1.

After today, the "better team" part is open to debate.

Gorgeous defensive move by Wong on Knight on the 2 on 1 right at the end of the 2nd period...took away the shot and the pass. Real good game but UMD is looking a bit tired to me.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

That was just the Bulldogs taking their obligatory one period off. Oy. It's a wonder every UMD fan doesn't have an ulcer by this point every season.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

Now THAT was a tight game. Can't say the Bulldogs didn't have their chances, but Rigsby shut them down. She's good. Great hockey from both sides and kudos to the Badgers as they get ready for Erie. Bring it home for the WCHA!

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

Excellent job of holding UW to only 2 goals...even while looking like they didn't have enough jump in their legs...UW looked like they had 6 or 7 skaters on the ice in the 3rd period...faster and looked hungrier, while there were several minutes where UMD was just watching UW and forgetting to play the game. Nonetheless, excellent accomplishment by UMD considering this year they appear to be UMD light.

WOW! Just got home from the game, and this was the fastest, most intense women's game I've seen. Probably the best game I've been to men's or women's. (I love it when the badgers win, but I always seem to end up at the blowouts.) On (Wisconsin) to Erie!

Re: NCAA Quarterfinals: UMD at #1 Wisconsin, 3/12 at 7 p.m.

Well, the Greyhounds are still alive. Awesome team! Sorry for the interruption.

Continuing the brief interruption...they are. I'm bummed that BOTH of my teams (Lady Dogs and the Greyhounds) lost great games today. Be interesting to see if Mike Randolph continues to coach the team after his son Jake graduates.

Back on topic...congrats to the Badgers, and on to the NCAA title. Bring it home to the WCHA. Try to do it by decisive margin, too. We'll be rooting for you!

We wondered before the season how the blue line would hold up, seeing as how they seemed to be a couple of bodies short. In the end, they managed to perform okay defensively, but seemingly at the expense of the offense, as they weren't as productive up front as one may have expected beforehand. If two years ago we'd been told that UMD would win the NCAA in one of the two coming seasons and miss the Frozen Four in the other, I doubt that many would have correctly placed the correct year on each outcome. Now next year I'd anticipate that graduation would leave a mark, but given they are hosting in the postseason, it probably won't be as simple as that.

Not exactly sure how productive that Torpedo system was that was supposed to address the shortage of defencemen this season. It seems to have been more effective early on, with respect to offensive production, which is counter intuitive, (and possibly incorrect), in that the team was just learning the system and apparently there were times when it wasn't possible to use it due to injuries and illness, which might have been worse. Seems, as well, that the defensive side of the system continually improved but at the expense of the offence, as you mentioned...witness today's game. (That's entirely apart from the fact that that wasn't the real Haley Irwin on the ice today and that they've been without her for most of the second half).

I recall hearing Miller explain the rationale for it just prior to the beginning of the season admitting that the inherent weakness in it was that it will create more odd man rushes against you, (as Megan Duggin sort of alluded to in the post game interview tonight), but that she was confident that their goaltenders were skilled enough to successfully deal with the majority of those rushes and that on balance, it would create more goals for than against, so it seemed like a no brainer to her.

When your back is to the wall you do what you have to do. I'm not sure that there was any other choice. Additionally, if one is a proponent of the philosophy that the best defence is a good offence then this system would seem to fit the bill and in doing so, kill two birds with one stone. It sure seemed to confuse and create a lot of havoc for the opposition in their end in the couple of games that I saw early in the season.

At any rate, I think that this was the best game by far today...two superior talents on display...albeit one with arguably a bit of a hadicap who still made it anyone's game. UM's performance (and some may argue, the outcome) was a fluke in that they just had a bad day but unfortunately combined that with some real bad timing. Which is not to take anything away from BC...I was really impressed. But I just don't think that they have the same depth as UW, UMD and UM...my point being that if UM had had a normal game today, with BC apparently playing at the top of their's today, we may have had two superior games.

Mercyhurst/BU was a wide open exciting game but just not on the same level as the UW/UMD game...at least that's my take.

All that being said, I just don't see anyone stopping UW although Cornell or BU might make it interesting.

That is the difference that stands out between last year and this season. Last season, Blais seemed to always be on her game down the stretch, and this year Irwin wasn't.

I suppose the other choice in this or any system would have been to try different people at D. Coach Miller moved Wong and Fridfinnson, and while Wong in particular did well, nobody really filled in the subsequent holes created up front.

BC did what a team is supposed to do -- stomp on the opponent early and never let them back up. Minnesota struggled with giving up early goals during the season, e.g. their first game in Columbus or the final one in Madison, and it took them a long time to right the ship on most occasions. The exception was the first home game against Bemidji when they have up a penalty shot goal in the first minute and went on to play a strong first period. Maybe the outcome would have changed had Schaus been a lesser goalie, but obviously, she is a huge reason why BC is where they are. Earlier in the year, I thought that BC would be a dangerous tourney opponent because of their seniors in key roles. Despite their strong record over the final month, it seemed like they had been playing well only in spurts during games. That wasn't a problem for the Eagles yesterday.

Irwin wasn't even IN the games down the stretch. That's the difference.

Yes, she missed a lot of games, but it was more than that. UMD won a lot of the games where she was out with an injury. She played in Minneapolis in January, and she wasn't that much of a factor, not like she was in October or like Blais was in the final four meetings last season. I assumed she was healthy then, but I don't know when she was impacted and by what.

USCHO's game recap.

Funny you should mention this. Not wanting to start a flame war between the realists and the politically correct crowd who visit this site, after the first period I was thinking that if I was BC I would not change a thing...just keep on stomping until the final buzzer...run up the score if you can and don't stop...(and at the same time I could hear the politically correct crowd loudly objecting from the dark recesses in the back of my mind). The best defence is a good offence...it's never over until it's over...cliches, true, but for a reason. Do not start playing to protect the lead because that is often a recipe for disaster in that, it seems to me, to change the mind set from confidence and success (which usually breeds more of same) to fear and desparation (which usually breeds more of same). Like you said, "never let them back up", and flooring it is the best way to accomplish that.
