NCAA Quarterfinal: UW Hosts BU

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: UW Hosts BU

I think LaBahn works to Wisconsin's advantage more than the Kohl Center would. I realize it isn't quite Olympic sized, but we've seen what #29 can do on an Olympic sheet, so I'm sure Mark Johnson is happy to defend against her on a smaller ice surface.

watch what you wish for. I don't believe you've seen a team as physical as BU all year. they can skate...fast. the small rink will be much tougher because they hit, slash, hold and elbow. it will all depend on how the physical game is called. you could have a ton of PP's or you will want to throw your shoe at the ref...depending on how they call it.

Good luck. it would make my month to see them lose.

Well I have, because I've seen BU, but then I'm not Wisconsin. I agree that BU is a physical team, but so are several WCHA teams, like UND, OSU, and MSU, so I don't think it will be anything out of the ordinary for Wisconsin. WCHA refs let a lot go, but they will call things like slashing if you do too many in a row or do something obvious like slash a stick out of somebody's hand or use a slash to deny a scoring chance. I think BU will get whistled a few times. The Badgers' PP is pretty average, but then so is the Terriers' PK.

I've seen a player punch another player in the head with a referee about 15-20 feet away, looking right at the incident with no obstructions, with no call given. (Ha, it makes it seem like that was an isolated incident.) I've seen at least one bona fide lumberjack-style slash (similar to Bobby Clarke's Summit Series slash, but with a bit less time on the backswing) go uncalled. The fans near me chuckle at the things Wisconsin gets away with. We won't loudly object, but we point it out.

Sometimes we're lucky and it's not the case.

Got any interesting chants percolating? We're in the section down by the band, so I'm sure we'll follow along with them, though I think a "BC Rejects" or "Maine Rejects" will be kinda funny. I wanted to do some Poulin/Canadian taunts, but UW had quite a few Canucks, so that won't work. I'm looking forward to a fantastic atmosphere.

UW's seen plenty of physical play, they won't be phased by that.

I don't know; nothing particularly interesting. I did get a big roll of banner paper (thinner than posterboard, which is better for my purposes), and hopefully I'll be able to make a strip of signs along the bottom of the glass over the resurfacer tunnel (along the bottom is better for this situation with reserved seating).

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: UW Hosts BU

It looks statistically that UW has a definite edge in goal. That could be the difference. It will be interesting to see how MJ matches up who against Poulin. I think Burke's pair will be out there when possible. I think he'll toss the "baby" Badger line out there against her and the Sr. line.

The umbrella pp they are running is a little worrisome as there is only 1 D at the blue line and BU is speedy, not much margin for error there.

The game will be streamed for free for those who can't make it. http://go.wisc.edu/whkyqfstream

Little surprised, although certainly not shocked, that the game hasn't sold out yet. It looks like there are still a fair number of seats available in the far corners and behind the end line, although anything on sides is pretty much sold out. I imagine the walk up crowd should get things up to capacity, but still a far cry from when an NCAA game would fill up at least the lower bowl of the Kohl. I also haven't heard any radio ads for the game, which I remember them doing last year.

When did they fill up more than the lower Kohl Center bowl? (I say that out of curiosity rather than doubt...I'm relatively new.)

The epic 4OT battle against Harvard in 07 did for sure. I wound up sitting in the 2nd deck that game. I think they might have against UMD in 11 too, although not as sure about that one.

There actually are only four NCAA games in women's Kohl Center history - in reverse order:
2012 vs Mercyhurst, 2946 per UW web site
2011 vs UM-Duluth, 4006 per UW web site
2009 vs Dartmouth, 3023 per USCHO box score
2007 vs Harvard, 5125 per news reports

The lower bowl holds about 5500 for hockey (about 2000 more for basketball, per UW web pages). So it was mostly filled for Harvard (give or take however many of the 5100 were in the 2nd deck).

Good luck with that. IIRC the NCAA isn't too keen on stuff like that...basically anything that isn't hand held.

It'll all fit in a normal-sized black folder that the supervisor of the ushers and ticket takers allows. If it's the same staff as usual, it won't be a problem. If it is a problem, I can run it back to my apartment and get back to LaBahn in time for the game.

Wow, I didn't know that! I know the 2012 game against Mercyhurst didn't quite get 4000 - it felt pretty full (mainly on the sides), but certainly wasn't packed.

Re: NCAA Quarterfinal: UW Hosts BU

Although she does not get the press attention of Poulin, Sarah Lefort is another BU player to watch out for.

This should be a good game. Good luck to the Badgers.

Either team will give Minnesota plenty to handle in the semi-finals.

Yeah, I think we know that...IF the Gophers take care of business and skate past RIT. And no matter who emerges from this quarterfinal, the Gophers better be prepared for the semi. The Badgers have played Minnesota enough times to properly prepare and execute the right game plan. And BU would come in very confident as well, also knowing what to expect and feeling confident that they're a much improved team from where they were early in the season when the played and lost to the Gophers at Ridder. And, as I recall, the play in that game was a lot closer than that 5-2 score would indicate.

Good luck to both teams tomorrow. Whichever one wins, as scorer says, will present a HUGE challenge to the Gophers in the semifinal....again assuming the Gophers get by RIT tomorrow afternoon.

I'm seeing red!

Good early pace in this one. Better video than the earlier game.
