Well that's bad for the rhyme scheme.
The composer’s roommate convinced him to withdraw it from the competition for a new Minnesota fight song and dedicate it to Wisconsin instead, and that roommate changed the lyrics.

The eventual winner of the competition was the Minnesota Rouser.

A ton of high schools use On Wisconsin. I wouldn't be shocked if it's the most used fight song in the country.

My money's on the Notre Dame Victory March. 3 of the 8 teams in my HS conference used it. Ten Thousand Men of Harvard is very big in the East and, while it brings me no joy to say this, it's the single most kick-ass school fight song.

My high school was Notre Dame. So when a dorky me programmed a football game in my high school computer class it played 'The Victors' if you scored and 'Notre Dame Victory March' if the computer scored.

Imagine my surprise a decade and a half later when I went to a hometown parade and my high school marching band was playing 'On Wisconsin'. When the heck did that happen? Silly Marylanders.
