I can’t remember what coach said it, but they had a formula for building a roster. A small handful of flashy superstars from the coasts, then fill out the rest with Minnesotans.

One question about mn players- how many start there and end up in Michigan for the usdp? So they get listed from mi?
I don't think they were for this particular one.

but i always have a good chuckle when they do that. nothing will top michigan claiming boldy last week

overall, the majority of elite MN players are still not choosing the USDP, but some damn good ones do (and its worked out well)

I would be willing to bet MN produces at least as many, if not more NHL regulars than Quebec these days.
My Canadian citizenship is based on many decades of my family living in Quebec. i told my attorney that we'd probably be urgently processed if we told them my nephew is a goalie, as they are now prioritizing goalie development after seeing what USNDP has done for our goalies

Interesting since that program almost means an nhl contract.

maybe related to what I said before - way more overall high level players than superstars. The best MN high school kids have no issue getting to D1 college teams, so maybe staying home and getting to play in St, Paul with the kids you've grown up with playing is more tempting.

I think more are choosing USNDP now than before, and I doubt that is just coincidental with the US now so close to Canada/even/surpassing talent wise. Someone like Mason West stayed home, won a football title, and now suits up at Michigan St anyway in the fall.

Maybe I get the organizations wrong, but as I understand it…..

While some MI HS have hockey, that path isn’t like some of elite programs around Detroit like Little Cesars or Honeybaked Ham- both of which seem to reliably put teams into the usdp. But the HS program isn’t all that much. And I think some parents move to MI for that even before the usdp.

Unlike MN where HS hockey is like IN basketball. Right? Do you have anything like those bantam or elite midget programs? Doesn’t seem that they are even needed given the HS programs.

But that illustrates how much better youth hockey is in mn than mi.

No, our players will almost all choose the high school over midget, here that's really for kids who don't make their local high school team. Which can still be good teams, since some of these cities will have high populations, and only 20 or so kids can make the high school team. If you're really set on development and don't want to leave MN and have some cash, you can go to Shattuck St. Marys (ala Crosby, MacKinnon, Parise, Celebrini). Or play USHL, which isn't that abnormal of a path. I think Jackson LaCombe is the latest one that comes to mind that chose Shattuck over USNDP.

Now that I type that out, perhaps SSM is now more of a Canadian superstar factory :ROFLMAO:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how MI does it, but I'm under the impression the USNDP is not like anything else, invite only, hockey intense, similar to Shattucks in some ways.

funny story, when I was working WJ, I was talking to a Latvia player and asked him how the hotel food was. He said it was awesome, esp considering compared to his boarding school. I asked where his boarding school was, and he said Faribault, MN

and if anyone thinks I am joking, my attorney did not laugh at my joke. He confirmed that there's a huge emphasis on goalie development now.

i love canada sometimes

I think the player ends up picking their hometown to list, so unless they consider Plymouth to be the greatest time of their lives, it's usually going to be where they were born or grew up.

1. Michigan vs. 32. Bentley
8. Denver vs 9. Cornell

2. Michigan State vs 15. UConn
7. Quinnipiac vs 10. Duluth

3. North Dakota vs 14. Augustana
6. Providence vs 11. Dartmouth

4. Western Michigan vs 13. Boston College
5. Penn State vs. 12. Wisconsin

Despite the movement, a fairly clean bracket with the only issue being PSU vs Wisconsin. Swap them with Dartmouth and it works, though you still have the issue of the overall 1 seed getting stuck with a possible "road" game.

Conference breakdown: Big Ten - 4, NCHC - 4, ECAC - 3, HE - 3, CCHA- 1, AHA - 1
IN: Augustana
OUT: St Thomas (13)

for lack of a better place

Brackets for MN state tourney starting Wednesday

Class A
Dodge County vs Hibbing/Chisolm
St Cloud Cathedral vs Mahtomedi
Mankato West vs Delano
Northern Lakes vs Warroad

Class AA
Gentry Academy vs Minnetonka
Grand Rapids vs Rosemount
Lakeville South vs Moorhead
Andover vs Edina

It’s funny how the high school programs change. Growing g up in Rosemount, it never entered my mind that my school would end up in the state tourney again. When I was a freshman, we made it via the since-denounced Tier 2 tournament (big school losers and small schools).

I miss the days when the 8 schools who made it made their own music videos! I got to see a few of my cousins in those. wish we still had the old vhs tapes
