NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Status

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

According to Google Maps, the travel time between Potsdam-Plattsburgh and Canton-Oswego is similar. It's really the only fair way to do it if SUNY Canton goes SUNYAC. Otherwise Potsdam-Canton is super close and then Plattsburgh and Oswego would basically be travelling through Canton and Potsdam to get to each other.

Conversely it could make the rivalry between Plattsburgh and Oswego even better because they would be playing the same opponent every weekend and the weekends where they play each other they don't also have Cortland and Potsdam to respectively deal with the night before or after.

Bottom line with travel partner is $$$. You don't want to make it insanely hard for one or two teams. The partner idea with Oz-Canton and Platty-Potsdam makes the most sense IMHO. It would be intriguing for Oz-Platty as partners, but it wouldn't be fair to either team.

Particularly the teams that play them.

There was one close to Boulder (about 15 miles away), but that got put under control pretty quickly. The others are farther away. The big one is in Colorado Springs. The air has been a bit smoky around here from time to time, depending on wind direction. Thunder storms are a mixed blessing - the rain helps, but the lightning starts new fires.

you could see the flames up on bear peak from here at night, when the wind blows in our direction it gets smoky. I drove down to home depot in superior the morning the fire started, and I could see a little smoke on bear peak. I was in there maybe an hour and when I left it was huge pillars of smoke, with the wind blowing it all right at us it probably grew 10 times as big in that hour.

Fair to either team?! I don't think it'd be fair to the rest of the league!

Until the NESCAC got all snooty the ECAC East had to deal with Norwich and Middlebury as travel partners. The origin of the expression 0-for Vermont.

I was thinking of the inability to spend two nights in the same hotel - but the 0-for is probably true too :D

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

Based on absolutely no knowledge of Upstate NY geography, I have no clue, but since my daughter went to St. Lawrence, I always had a hard time figuring out why Plattsburgh was paired with Potsdam in the travel partner scheme, because it felt like it took forever and a day to drive from Plattsburgh across to Canton
Did you take the shortcut around Rt 11? That will save time unless the weather is horrid.

I did. It was still a long hike.

I still don't think that the "stay in one hotel" concept would be more valid for Platty/Potty than for Platt/Wego. Both are a pretty good hike, whereas Canton/Potty would be a natural. But, what do I know?

Welcome to the world of DIII hockey, Kangaroos. :)

Talking about travel partners (if Canton goes SUNYAC), Plattsburgh has a long trek through the Adirondacks to get to conference foes on the west side of the state. Should they get paired with Oswego (...bloody h*ll...), the Cardinals will be traveling a distance vastly disproportionate to what the Lakers would be - a simple jaunt to Brockport/Genny for Oz becomes a marathon for Platty in the same weekend. At least with Potsdam up where it is, the Bears and Cards share some form of comparable distance-to-drive for their conference excursions together.

Meanwhile, Cortland and Morrisville were always meant to be together with their geographic proximity, in my opinion. Given the ease of which the other pairings in the SUNYAC are made already, I'd say Canton rides with the Lakers. Might be a long haul for them on occasion, but they're considerably closer than Platty is to Oz, the Cardinals and Bears have a bond it would seem (both geographically and traditionally), and Oswego's on their own figurative geographic island on the southeast lake corner as it were - nobody's real close by, but Canton has the "shortest trip" with the Lakers when it comes to finding travel partners.

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

Plattsburgh to Canton is about 100 miles or a bit less. The last leg of the trip however, from Potsdam to Canton, isn't called "the longest 10 miles in the world" for nothing ! LOL

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

As a couple of others have alluded, reasonably close travel partners for all league members are far more for the benefit of the rest of the conference than for the actual partners. Partner games account for only two games on the schedule. Now, let's take a look at the seven longest trips between any two teams in the SUNYAC:

  • Plattsburgh - Oswego
  • Plattsburgh - Cortland
  • Plattsburgh - Geneseo
  • Plattsburgh - Brockport
  • Plattsburgh - Buff State
  • Plattsburgh - Fredonia
  • Plattsburgh - Morrisville

Pair Potsdam with Canton, and not only would two teams have to make one of these trips on every home weekend for Plattsburgh/Whoever, but they'd have to do it overnight, between consecutive game nights. It really isn't in anyone's interests to reassign the one team that's a bearable difference from Plattsburgh.

Jesus Christ people. Doesn't your beloved SUNYAC have enough teams in it already? :p

How about we give you some Golden Flyers for some Kangaroos? ;)

Re: NCAA Division III Membership Committee Recommends SUNY Canton for Provisional Sta

It takes us about 1hour and 30 minutes to get to Potsdam. We made that trek for 3and 1/2 years for our daughter who attended school there and for hockey.
Also, the team never stays overnight for this game. Potsdam is the best travel partner distance wise and economically. I would not see any reason to change this matchup. SUNY schools can ill afford added costs for travel.

This sounds like an operations research problem. In fact, if I have some spare time and a mileage table, I may look into it.

About 85 miles from Plattsburgh to Potsdam (190 to Brainardsville,County rt? to Malone, Rt 11B to Potsdam)

It is County Route 24, and you can take 374 or 190 - 374 now that it has been repaved is better than 190 is in the West Chazy area. 190 has been repaved from Ellenburg to Brainardsville.

374 is about 10 minutes longer, probably because of curves going aroun the lakes. Still a more scenic ride.
