NCAA D3 Rankings

Re: NCAA D3 Rankings

Just Got it

So

Concordia @ RIT
Plattsburgh @ Middlebury
River Falls @ Gustavus
Amherst @ Norwich

So the NCAA holds true to the comparisons...let's go Cobbers! I can't imagine the celebration up in Moorhead right now.

What is great about this, is that there is no favorite, any team can win....DIII hockey has come a long way. Good luck to everyone!!

Heck, Elmira could have won this whole thing too, except they weren't even invited.... one of Elmira/Plattsburgh/Concordia was going to have a good case for "we was robbed"...

Re: NCAA D3 Rankings

Congratulations to the NCAA on doing the right thing and flying Concordia out to play RIT!!!
Good Luck to all the players, coaches and parents.

Re: NCAA D3 Rankings

I'm going to re-post this here as it applies to this thread more so than the RIT thread which it was originally posted in.

Not as expected as you may think. Elmira beat Plattsburgh in the numbers so the committee must have changed some things up or just moved Plattsburgh up solely based on the fact they got to the ECAC West finals and Elmira lost in the play-in round.

Actually, it is exactly what I expected, although I completely understand that it is open to debate. In fact Josh Carey projected Elmira into the field so you certainly should not have expected them to get in. Seriously though, you can't flatly say Elmira beat Plattsburgh in the criteria. If you look at it strictly as a numbers game (which the NCAA clearly states they don't do) then yes, Elmira technically wins more categories of criteria than Plattsburgh. However, they weigh each segment differently, so let's have a look shall we.

Code:
    Elmira vs Plattsburgh
WIN 0.7885 1 0.7222 0
SOS 0.5300 0 0.5645 1
H2H 1- 1- 0 0 1- 1- 0 0
COP 17- 4- 1 1 16- 5- 3 0
RNK 4- 4- 1 1 4- 5- 2 0
============================================
PTS 3 1

Now, to the casual observer, one would see 3-1 and think it's cut and dry. But if you have a look, the difference between COP and RNK is so razor thin those categories are essentially even. Which leaves us with two things to look at, Win% and SOS. Elmira holds the lead in Win% by a large enough amount to award them a point for it, however it is certainly not a large gap. SOS on the other hand favors Plattsburgh immensely. It's quite clear that the commanding lead Plattsburgh had in SOS outweighed the good but not great advantage Elmira had in Win%. It's safe to say that just playing RIT, and the boost to SOS it provided (and yes it was a significant boost, nearly .01 points, which is a lot when speaking of SOS over a 25+ game season) is what propelled the Cardinals into the dance.
