Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

There are non-creepy Nazi sympathizers?

Well in my mind there are those that believe in the whole Nazi cause and then Ralph who had a hard on for Adolf. Both are terrible, but one is terrible and creepy.

A similarity would be the average Sioux fan and then you, dirty, a Sioux fan that just seems to fit into his own category :D

By my count, Minnie posters are getting their arses handed to them here. There is no dishonor in surrender if it saves what little self respect you have left. Sioux fans are a compassionate lot, and it's as difficult for us as it is for you.

It gets boring after a while. We're anxious to play the game since we know our team is better.

How anxious were you before Holy Cross? This is possibly the worst Sioux team in over a decade, so everything that happened so far and what happens into the Frozen Four is gravy. It sure would suck, however minuscule the possibility, for goofs to lose to such a weak team.

We're saving our hostility for current rivals :p

I'm not stupid enough to think this game can't go either way. I'm just **** excited for the game, and reading this thread is painful (with respect to content from both sides), so I've kind of stayed out of it and spent more time on collegehockeystats.net.

Psh, what are you talking about? According to whioux fans, the Gophers "need" the whioux just simply to exist so clearly they are the Gophers only real rival.

WARNING! ACTUAL HOCKEY TALK FOLLOWS.

I'm not sure how miniscule North Dakota's chances are, but I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that if both teams play equal, Minnesota will advance far more often than not. The Gophers are a more talented and complete team than this Sioux squad. They have balanced scoring, and great defense. Throw in a Hobey Finalist in Net, and I'm not sure if there is a more balanced team in the country. North Dakota is similar in that nature (balanced scoring, strong defense, and a good goalie), but they just aren't as talented in each aspect as Minnesota.

For example:
Balanced Scoring?
- Minnesota has 9 players with 7 or more goals (nobody with more than 15) (Minnesota actually has 9 players with 9+ goals)
- North Dakota has 9 players with 7 or more goals (nobody with more than 17)

Production from the Blue Line?
- Minnesota's defense accounts for 27 goals and 71 assists (98 points)
- North Dakota's defense accounts for 31 goals and 82 assists (113 points)

Team Scoring?
- Minnesota averages 3.51 Goals per game
- North Dakota averages 3.07 Goals per game

Team Defense?
- Minnesota allows 2.00 Goals per game
- North Dakota allows 2.44 Goals per game

Goaltending?
- Wilcox is 25-5-6 with a 1.89 GAA and a SV% of 93.4
- Gothberg is 20-9-3 with a 1.99 GAA and a SV% of 92.6

In sum, it's not that North Dakota is a bad team. They are quite similar to Minnesota in how they win games. However, Minnesota is the more talented team, and as a result does the same things better than North Dakota...leading to a better record. Consequently, Minnesota should be considered the favorite, and they likely will beat North Dakota. Of course, just because Team A should beat Team B doesn't mean they will...just ask North Dakota and Michigan fans about 2011.

I think this is spot on... While I think that we match up pretty well with defense and goaltending, with the edge given to the gophers, their forwards are a much more skilled bunch. I think in order for the Sioux to get the win they will have to score at least 4 goals, their defense will have to play very well, and Gothberg will have to stand on his head. Gothberg is a very good goalie but tends to let in at least one goal he wishes he had back. Every night. This will not work vs. the gophers.

Re: National Semi-Final: Minnesota vs. North Dakota

Parise bless you for your upright nature and your ability to evaluate these two teams, FS23, but the problem with pure hockey talk this early is that all sane people agree that UMinn should win this one going away and there is just not that much to discuss. But you bring in factors such as the gophers' low level of intelligence throughout the lineup and that drooling, open-mouth appearance they all share (along with their fans), then it's a much closer call and a more interesting discussion. If you think dumb and ugly doesn't count, explain why they only have 5 titles with all that talent.

Gophers have been having trouble getting to three goals some weekends. The Gopher's success this season has been much more predicated on defense and goaltending than in years past.

If UND plays as well in the neutral zone and their own zone as they did last weekend, and gets the same level of goaltending, they will make it hard for the Gophers to score. We haven't been scoring in bunches this season.

Like FS23 said, throw out the comparisons and records this time of season, especially between these two teams. I bet money this is going to be a close, hard-fought game with the winner being the team that has the fewest defensive lapses.
