National Semi-Final April 9 BU vs Sioux (revenge for 1997)

Re: National Semi-Final April 9 BU vs Sioux (revenge for 1997)

No I don't. Boston is very provincial and they will cheer for their own. BC fans won't show up just to cheer against BU. They just won't show up...

The Boston FF will be different than ones in Tampa, Pittsburgh or Philly for two reasons. First, the natives know hockey in general, know enough about college hockey in particular to not be surprised when the players come out wearing face masks. Second, BU is the home team. There are three other D1 schools within a few miles, so not everybody in Boston will be cheering for the Terriers, but they clearly will be the crowd favorite. It won't be like Minnesota playing in St. Paul in 2002, but I'm sure the majority of the crowd will be with BU. Scalpers should do well.

Yeah, I don't get the feeling that this will be like a Beanpot, where everyone stakes out their team for the day, and we see half the Garden cheer at each goal.

I'm more of the mind that the overwhelming majority of locals will be pulling for BU — especially against the SIOUX DAMMIT — and if Providence makes it to the Garden, there will be a strong desire to see an all-Hockey East championship game (hasn't happened since 1999).

You already used this exact same joke! you need new material, mister!

And if there is any doubt to whom I'm referring to, one is NOT familiar with die-hard Whioux fans.

Agreed, Greg. And regardless, you can be sure that the 2nd game Thursday may very well be a classic. IMO the two best teams in the country. I won't start another controversy right now, but imagine if they reseeded before the FF? Almost a shame that this game is not the final.

Yes, more or less. In a different state, in a regional hosted by a conference rival. Not the same. Not many other schools can play in their hometown and have a large amount of local fans in the building cheer for them to lose, which could easily happen this Frozen Four.

Let's not pretend like Manchester is the Gaza Strip. BU fans are perfectly capable of getting to a regional as UND is, even though it's "it's in a different state". North Dakota fans routinely invade Minneapolis in "enemy territory" and that's 300 miles away.

Many UND fans also live here. And most of the other MN schools' fanbases will cheer against the Gophers (sometimes even when UND/WI are playing them).

It's true that it's only a 1 hour drive, but again, mayyyyybe 10% of BU students have cars, and most young alums stay in Boston or go to NYC and continue to rely on public transport. We had to rent cars to travel to the regionals when I still lived in Boston, so that is a bit of a barrier. Also why it's hugely important for the Athletics dept to continue to organize things like the buses to Manchester like they did for the regional final. Makes a ginormous difference for the students ability to support the team.

True, many fans do live in Minneapolis but loads travel down too(I'm one of them:)). That's not the case for Fargo though. I-29 looked like the DC beltway last night, and you can usually close your eyes and make it safely! :D

BU is a private, Eastern school. It's not like the big state schools where the entire state shows up. If New Hampshire had made the Regional the place would have been banged out. Athletics are not the biggest priority in the Northeast. BU dropped football years ago. It is an academic, research institution with a wide international reach. Sports are not the priority. The hockey program is a legacy tradition, but it's the exception rather than the rule here. North Dakota has ONE Division 1 hockey program. There are FOUR just in Boston (Harvard, BU, BC and Northeastern) that are all within about 4 miles of each other. It's just different. So saying that "The Sioux fans travel, why can't you?" just doesn't explain the situation. You wouldn't understand unless you lived here.

Oh, I understand. Your fanbase sucks. Simple. Just like your team.

The end part was my favorite. You may as well have just said "It's a Jersey thing".

Haha... well I guess that ends that conversation. :D

Actually, UND's fan base is one of the easiest out there to rile up and rag on. Let's see what the Terrier fan base has got. ;)
My guess is the Terrier's are no match for the Sue.

Gettin' me some popcorn. :)

No worries. With Fargo being home to NDSU, the UND players saw plenty of hairy broads this weekend.
