Nanook Nation 2014-2015

At least Youngmun is a local kid and the thing might not be an international incident. The Lasse Uusivirta incident is back up again, and I'm glad of it. UAH completely screwed the pooch, but I like that the first public step here with Youngmun is that he's banned from UAF property. Uusivirta's presence was never a problem for anyone. It was an absolute failure of leadership at UAH.

GFM

It is a dark side of college sports that this kind of stuff happens. Jameis Winston...Duke...there's a current athlete rape case at Oregon...your UAH case, so on. Perhaps I am generalizing too much, but I think athletes are coddled and brown-nosed enough on their respective campuses that some of them start thinking they are above the law. And let's face it, most male athletes have girls falling all over them anyway.

Per the Anchorage paper, Youngmun is presently living on taxpayer dollars at Fairbanks Correctional Center.

I read that article you linked, and that is horrendous. I hope she wins her federal Title IX lawsuit against the university.

One odd thing is that the KTUU article says that Youngman will not be allowed to play hockey for UAF, but he was a senior anyway!

Her Title IX rights were protected. It was reported, investigated, he was indicted, and banned from the institution. In a span of 10 days, which included getting a search warrant to get him to confess to her wearing a wire. That happened very swiftly for a rape case. The University did everything it was supposed to, and I'm happy with how it was handled. I deal with UAF PD a lot with various cases and there are some very competent and good honest officers working there that are great at their jobs. The officer that reviewed Shiyak's abuse case from UAF PD (Steve Goetz) is honestly one of the best criminal investigators in the state.

But goes to show you can take the kid out of Anchorage, but you can't take Anchorage out of the kid :P

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Not taking anything away from the case or downplaying rape by any means. The case is pretty much open and shut.

But I am sad for Nolan. The kid played D1 hockey on scholarship. Got a degree in petroleum engineering. Academically gifted. Had a 6-figure job lined up at Halliburton immediately following graduation and this happens. Massively unfortunate timing.

Curious who our third non-conference series is and where. My $$ is on a roadie to Penn State, based on recent trends.

Nanooks travel to Madison in January to play Wisconsin who agreed to play the 2016 Brice.

2015 BAGR - RPI and AIC (who agreed last minute after Minnesota backed out)
2016 BAGR - Wisconsin & North Dakota
2017 BAGR - Nebraska-Omaha &??? (Vermont/Air Force interested)

I'd change "massively unfortunate timing" to "massively stupid decision making" but otherwise spot on.

Thanks for the info. Too bad Minnesota welched...it'd be fun to watch Dallas coach against Lucia.

As much as these Big 10 and NCHC fans whine and moan about trips to Alaska, a lot of their teams still seem to want to make the trip. Ironic, dontcha think?

Not that I enjoy siding with a UAA fan on much of anything, but I think Suze was referencing the UAH case, not Youngmun, in that post.

Had a great future lined up, worked hard towards his goal of a great future with a great job within months.
unfortunate timing.
Unfortunate timing? Dude....more like a dumbass drunk decision that will be with him the rest of his life.

I was indeed, thanks for the clarification. Both cases are absolutely despicable.

I didn't make that connection initially, I was reading on my phone while waiting for an appointment. But reading through the previous pages and gfmorris' comments, it's clear. Haven't been on here for quite a while. I've been focusing on other things, it's been quite nice.

But this news is pretty bad, no matter which way you look at it, and it looks bad on the program. Even if he is done playing.

I'm debating attending the hearing this week.

Well at least that whiney Gary Shuchuck was fired by Wisconsin and won't be in Fairbainks to whine about the facilities.

Re: Nanook Nation 2014-2015

Sounds like a good recruiting pickup from Topeka: http://topekaroadrunners.pointstreaksites.com/view/topekaroadrunners/news/news_296210

I don't normally post a lot on recruiting, but I think the coaching staff has made a great effort to grow our offensive depth over the last few years. The past two seasons in particular we have had late-season winning streaks that used to be rare because our guys looked gassed by the end of the season. It also had a detrimental effect playing elite teams; think back to that 2010 game against Boston College where we had a great top line that could skate with anybody in college hockey, a pretty good second line and a really good goalie in Greenham going up against a BC team that had three lines as good or better as our top line and won a natty two weeks later. Long story short, this kid seems to tie into that depth strategy.

Speaking of coaching, the elephant in the room is Coach Ferguson's contract is up after this coming season. I really hope we are able to retain him, but frankly if he ever wanted to jump to pro coaching the time would probably be now.

Pro coaching at the NHL level is big bucks, AHL kinda sorta, ECHL pay cut from college level.
All the pro jobs are a crap shoot. Through no fault of your own you're fired.
Very little guaranteed long term security.
Fergy has done a great job. To me it looks as if for the foreseeable future he has a secure situation.
If you're really concerned, raise some outside money for a TV show or consulting gig or whatever the big time schools do to ensure the coach stays put.

I am not too concerned, but you never know. I don't think he'd leave for another college program...he is raising his family there, he's an alum, etc. There have been rumors that he has shot down bigger programs in the past to stay "home". I think it would take an AHL gig, at least, to pry him away.
