NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

Maybe I should have mentioned that the Bus Driver appears to have a hyphenated name and is from Vermont! Do you think that will make a difference? :)

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

I just spoke with UCONNFAN, and we agreed, your best bet is probably to stay in I-90 and skip past the I-93 exits, continuing to the exit for Allston-Brighton. If you have a professional driver, he/she will know this way into Harvard. This is realistically 30 minutes or so, again barring an accident on the Interstate.

Again, the challenging part is that you are a bus and there are road restrictions, but we both think this should do the trick for ya!

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

I think 40-50 minutes is more realistic. I 'm not real keen on the way that mapquest wants to send you. That section of I-90 that intersects with I-93 is a bear from about 3 PM until 7 PM, and then the rest of the way via Mapquest takes you through a whole series of traffic lights. I have found that Mapquest/Garmin do not typically do a good job of anticipating the impact of traffic lights with their directions and time estimates.

The problem you have is that you are going to be on a Chartered Bus. There are easier ways to Harvard via either Storrow Drive or Memorial Drive ("the river roads" along The Charles), but I'm quite sure that Storrow is restricted to cars only.

UCONNFAN might have a better suggestion.....

Been in the area often and it can be anything from quick to basically sitting in a parking lot for 30 minutes or more. In addition lots of twists and turns and obscure angles in and around Storrow Drive and the 93......Why not stay on the 90 going out and then get off once you are close to Harvard. Love to visit Boston Downtown, but NOT during rush hour.

Aaah.... mais oui....is his name Jean-Louis, Jean-Charles or Jean-Guy ?.
5-4, maybe you'll have to take off the gloves worthy thy name. :D :D :D

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

Take Mass pike West and get off at first exit. This exit is for Allston/Brighton and Cambridge. when you exit stay to left do not go right to cambridge, this will put you on cambridge street. Second set of lights there is a Hess gas station take a right, this is North Harvard Street. Follow for about a mile and you will see the Stadium on your left, the hockey rink is right beside the stadium just as you pass the stadium. This is a quick bus friendly route, but like the rest at this hour, will take about forty minutes.

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

The further i get into this itinerary the more I wonder...should have asked this the first go around however on the same day Wednesday they have us leaving Harvard at 6:00pm and in Willmington at 6:45 for a 7:30 ex game against the Shamrocks at Rustuccia Arena. Is that doable?

Secondly does anybody know the name of the restaurant right across the road from the rink? We went there last go around and were treated like gold and would like to go back but need to phone ahead.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

Rocco's Restaurant

I'd leave 15 minutes earlier if possible. 93 North can be slow going at that hour, too. Shouldn't be more than an hour, I don't think.

For the un-initiated, Mass Pike West is the same as I-90.

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

What gives guys? A half a page of good commentary about the NAHA tourney and one and one-half pages on directions through Boston! I can sense a good tourney. Where's the bar?

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

Good information guy's appreciate it.

Ya, Rocco's that's the place. Good food, friendly owners and staff!

Is there a good sharpener in Burlington, or should I bring the portable? We play 3 games in one day!

I'm with Slew...Where is the bar in Burlington?

Very true. Not a lot of places will greet an entire hockey team with smiles, a full menu, good food and service.

Where did I put that Dining Guide:confused:

Lots of decent places around Cairnes, and the hotel bar / restaurants are good as well. Remember - you are in a college town;)

Funny story... I was sent ahead to secure tables and pre-order at Rocco`s. I sat down at the bar beside an older gentleman and proceeded to tell him what I was up to. The minute he found out we were a Female Hockey team from Canada...the wheels were set in motion. The owner was quickly summoned from the back. A meal plan was put together and as I said we were treated like gold from the minute we arrived until departure. Beauty!
Oh and BTW when I asked ownership who the older fella was at the bar that seemingly made things happen in a hurry...Turns out he was once the Captain of the Boston College Men`s Hockey team from the 50`s...a bit of a legend around Rocco`s I came to understand.

Right! It`s all coming back to me now. It`s Move-In weekend. I remember from two years ago going downtown as they had the Main Street shutdown and a kind of...what we would call, Fringe Festival going on. It was really something else to stumble across. Hope it's an annual event.

There is a good sharperner not far from the UVM rink. From the UVM rink, head north to the main drag (HWY 2 ?), and head east toward Williston, cross over the I89 and then it is less than a mile up the road heading East on your left, not far from the Dunkin Donuts shop. Just ask the Driscolls, they can give you the name of the place.

Lots of great joints on Church street. A must visit when in Burlington, including the Ben and Jerries. (I had one of those ice creams just the other day, double chocolate...Hmmm)

Re: NAHA Labor/Labour Day Tournament 2010

ON MAA refers to Kevin Smith's Sports Connection. From UVM or the Cairns rinks proceed to Williston Rd. Take a right. Right after the light at the DoubleTree and Best Western, it's in the 2nd shopping plaza on the left.

All I wanna know is can a flatlander get one of those whoopie pies everyone is on about... in the Boston/Burlington area's, keeping in mind we are on a boneshaker that's hard to park.

I mean the thing has it's own thread!

Heard lot's about them but don't know where to locate...would like to take all my wingers out for the experience...

Yeah, good luck with that.

Whoopie Pies seem to follow the karma/chipitity ratings on these boards.

Store bought stuff is on a buyer-beware basis!

Sounds like I miss you NAHA folks dropping my D off at prep school, so no food connections this trip in any event!

Enjoy New England. Enjoy the family experience.

Hope all is good with you and yours,

DYD
