Re: N_c_h_a (009'-010' A.d.)

I swear to you people I don't make these up. I had another hockey related dream last night. For once it didn't involve St. Norbert...

In this dream, yesterday was today, which meant it was tonight. St. Scholastica @ Stevens Point. In my dream I slept through most of the game, but woke up in the middle of the third period and it was 3-2 CSS. Two empty netters and the final was 5-2 CSS. I heard some of the third period on the radio but my godson kept unplugging the radio so I don't have details.

After that I ended up at a liquor store with the UWSP radio crew. They were vacuuming the store and it had bright blue carpet.

This really can't be starting up again already...

Prediction...... The other EC in DIII hockey UWEC is still the David in this Goliath (s/p) of a conference, but I think this will be the year that they make their mark. Time will tell, but a good (under the radar) recruiting class with some strong leadership. Also, one of three teams in the NCHA with proven goaltending. Regardless of the outcome, looking forward to the back to back series and a lot of BG wins!

Hey, I'm not saying they won't win, and I'm not going to try to predict how far they'll go. But what I saw with CSS four years ago was the best recruiting class of the modern era, which led to their first winning season in 20 years (15-10-2). What I also saw was they lost a whole lot of NCHA games and exited the playoffs after the first round. Tough conference all around... experience definitely has an impact.

Re: NCHA 09-10

Very entertaining series between Scholastica and Point this weekend.

The Saints were very impressive, especially when put into context. Meaning: they didn't seem to show much of a dropoff considering the point production, leadership and goaltending they lost to graduation. Never mind the fact that it was their first games of the year.

For the most part, their positioning was exceptional and offered little by way of grade A chances for Point. When Point did get a good look, sophomore goalie Brennan Podzeray was up to the task. He started both games and for having little experience, looked really solid. Not the style of goaltender who beats himself. Well-positioned and always in control. No idea if he is "the guy" for CSS this year, but he saw a fair amount of rubber on the weekend (67 saves) and showed no discernable weaknesses.

I may just be a tad rusty this early in the season, but CSS also seemed to have a little more team speed than I recall. This showed Friday in particular as the difference was a few defensive mistakes by Point. That led to odd man rushes for CSS and they buried the chances.

All in all, again, very impressive weekend by CSS considering what they had to replace.

As far as Point, there weren't a lot of negatives despite the fact that 0-2 isn't how anyone wants to start off in the conference. The talent is clearly there and they are a much deeper team than last year. Speer got the nod in net both nights played well. From my vantage point none of the goals he allowed were due to any fundamental mistakes on his part.

At times it was obvious Point was a young team as there was some disorganization on the breakout and through the neutral zone. Call it just a tad sloppy at times, which was probably expected with 8 or 9 freshmen in the lineup on Friday and 13 on Saturday.

It's also possible that the only reason this was noticeable at all is because CSS plays unbelievable team defense, so it's tough to deal with them in the first place, no less with a slew of guys wha are just getting their feet wet.

Overall, a great NCHA series to get things underway...and though I'm sure they'll find plenty of things to work on with their respective teams, I think both coaches have plenty of reasons to be pleased with the actual play this weekend.

Webb, funny you mention CSS' defense because that was what I first noticed about them a few years back when last year's senior class was starting out as a young group. They did a great job blocking shots and clogging up passing lanes. Probably one of the best efforts I'd seen by any team in a long time. The talent gap between them and SNC at the time was wide, but they stayed in the game by frustrating the heck out of the Knights because they were really playing a smart defensive game.

Re: N_c_h_a (009'-010' A.d.)

You sure hate to see a player's final season be less than a full game long. Props to the writer of that piece for making a point of saying it was a clean hit on the injury. Too often we assume it was some sort of dirty play or something outside of the rules when a guy gets hurt because of it.

Re: N_c_h_a (009'-010' A.d.)

Any word on why River goalie, Bo Storozuk, left last night's game after just 1:33 of the first period???

Didn’t see what happened to Bo, but the kid who stepped in was the only reason why River wasn’t run out of the building. The second half of the game was all EC. River is better up front compared to last year, but they aren’t deep enough to roll four lines so EC ended up wearing them down. Look for River to win a lot of Friday night games and struggle to play a full 60 on Saturdays.

Re: N_c_h_a (009'-010' A.d.)

I was at the game and I have to disagree. Rf Depth is there strength. RF played the last half the game almost a man down with 25 minutes of penaltys Just by RF alone. rf has given up 1 pp goal the entire year, but the rf goaltender was great. Rf also had one of there leading scorers yuel out this weekend with a knee.

Time will tell, but I thought they looked tired, down a man or not as the season goes on I bet they will struggle on Saturdays and teams typically do take more penalties when they're tired. It will be fun to see how they do.

Re: N_c_h_a (009'-010' A.d.)

I think in D3 it is more common that you do not have quality depth after the 3rd line in my opinion. Best teams may be able to roll all 3 lines but most will have to shorten the bench in a pinch.

The back up or 2nd golaie that RF come in, Babcock?, I thought did a stand up job. Not being there I don`t know if the Falcons take undisiplined stupid penalties or had some bad calls as mentioned before in other posts.

I haven`t had a chance to see River Falls play alot yet with it being so early but they seem to be ateam that yiou can`t count out and they will some how even in an unorthodox way come back or at least give you a good show. I want to see them play St.Norberts

Re: N_c_h_a (009'-010' A.d.)

Right now Rf seems to be a team that does take some dum penaltys and they will not be able to do that against teams like norbs. If they do norbs will eat them alive. fridays game against eau claire was cleaner for RF but then with 2 minutes left they take a penalty and calleja got a shorty with 30 seconds left to go in the game to win it. Cant keep taking penaltys and especially in crucial times and keep winning forever. norbs and RF i think a split for RF would be big but they will need to stay out of the box which could be key. Look what happened to point when they played norbs and took penaltys, ouch.

Is St Norbets a team so far this year that takes very few penalties and whenthe opposing team does take a penalty is St Norberts PP really productive so far this season? I will have to look it up but doesn`t River Falls have one one or two goals scored on their PK? Need to research that as well
