MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

I looked that place up on Google Maps. How the heck do the handful of people living in that region not have to travel to Intl. Falls or Duluth to fly out?
Int'l Falls is a 9 hour dog sled ride.

I'm watching Andover play Duluth East on MNHockeyHub, and the quality of video is much, much better than what I've seen on the Tech feed

No matter what happens this weekend, I would have to say this season for the Huskies has been successful. Flirting with a .500 season overall and a chance for home ice in the playoffs isn't too shabby in Mel's first season. These guys could be dangerous in the playoffs no matter where they play.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

personally, I'm thrilled with this season. way better that expected.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

hope all Tech fans travel safely to the Springs. we've made it as far as ABQ. hopefully Springs tomorrow!

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

Yikes, I didn't check in for a day and this thread turned into the Travel Channel. A few interesting factoids about the airline industry: 1) Don't try to figure out their pricing. There is no logic just tons and tons of rules that in the end may or may not make sense for your routing. For example, fares are generally cheaper if your don't cross the Mississippi river. So in many cases you can fly from somewhere on the East Coast to MSP for a connection and then go back to WI for example and the flight will be cheaper than stopping in Minneapolis. 2) Go through more than one hub city and the fare drops even though you are taking more flights. WI to MSP to Detroit to the East Coast is generally cheaper than only making one connection. Not logical, but that is how one of the rules works. Any lastly my favorite for all you Big Brother folks out there, most airlines do track your hits on their site. The more you look at a route or fare, it starts creeping up. Don't believe me. Shop for your fare, get all your searching done and then delete all the cookies from your browser. Then go back in and book your trip. 90% of the time it will lower than what you just saw moments before. Sad but true.

But hey there is also hockey this weekend. Just got back from watching the Avs get shut out 2-Nill by the Blue Jackets. It's a bad night for the home team when your leading goal scorer is the one dropping the gloves to try and spark the team... I was not impressed with the Pepsi Center at all. There is nothing related to hockey in the building other then the banners in the rafters. Ok place to watch a game but ZERO history or displays of any kind to look at when there is no action on the ice.

Go Tech - Home Ice!

Everything involving hockey is pathetic in that state.

Anyone out there have access to a Michigan Tech hockey yearbook from Mel's playing days?

Have a program with him as an assistant and plan on getting it signed this weekend.

I need a citation for his birthdate (for Wikipedia), but I'm guessing it wasn't included for coaches.

Re: MTU season thread Part 3. The Mel Sky-Pearson chronicles

I would just like to point out that Tech is playing for home ice tonight. Not only are they playing for a shot at home ice, if they sweep this weekend there will be Tech hockey in houghton next weekend. That is kind of nuts.

Tech acutally has a great shot of joining me at the Final Five next year. Also just for the record the last time I decided to go to the final five Tech decided to join me. So things are looking good.

Sadly, Tech will probably be leading the WCHA next season, only to have the world end during the Christmas break. Thus never getting to win the league or go to the Final Five.

Everyone together now!

As I recall, the last time Tech was invited to the Final Five, they forgot to show up.

todays Colorado Springs Gazette called the Tigers six seniors "hard-working bunch that couldn't help the team deliver when it mattered." however, the team still has "silent hope - possibly more like prayer - for the school's first national championship since 1957. tough press crowd.
