MTU @ MN: Whose coach gets fired first?

Re: MTU @ MN: Whose coach gets fired first?

That lovable idiot Carl Dassbach is probably still running around saying we should eliminate the hockey team and use the money saved to either fund more academic scholarships or lower tuition across the board.

You're forgetting about salary raises for faculty. ;)

In all seriousness, he was one of my favorite profs. Class was always interesting, even if your own opinion was 180 deg. from his.

Re: MTU @ MN: Whose coach gets fired first?

The Slumberland outlet in St Louis Park isn't bad at all. Pretty much got all my furniture there for less than $1200 (couch, loveseat, coffeetable, 2 end tables, dining set, and two lamps). Unfortunately, one end table and the coffee table didn't survive their first move, which was about 4 years after they were bought.

And if you think Blais is going anywhere else in his lifetime, you are sadly mistaken.

Re: MTU @ MN: Whose coach gets fired first?

I apologize for taking this in a basketball direction for a moment but it kind of fits in with the talks about Maturi.Unless Tubby said specifically that they lost to tOSU due to not having a practice facility, then I highly doubt that is what he was implying by pleading for a practice facility. It definitely hurts Tubby from a recruiting standpoint and if you don't think so then you are crazy in the head. I really hope they can get it taken care of for the well-being of the basketball program.

When a coach strongly reiterates that a practice facility is needed immediately after a loss, there's sufficient inferential causality albeit qualitative. I won't take the time to pull the reference. Tubby Smith was not hired primarily because of his past performance, but because of his inherent reputation and abilities to coach and recruit. That is one of the primary criterion college recruits use to choose a school and athletic program. The other is the academic reputation and financial opportunities provided by the university or college.

Generally speaking, practice facilities are not salient in recruiting modalities. They are typically secondary selection criterion. Although a $20 million practice facility will obviously accentuate the program, it remains to be seen what quantitative resonance it will have upon the dependent variable of winning an NCAA championship. IMHO it will be negligible, but we'll have to wait at least 3-5 years to find out. Will Tubby still be here at the U? Maybe, but there are current rumors here on campus he may not.:)

We got our couch, 3 tables, and a desk from Furnish 123, a nice no hassle buying experience. They should have locations in the cities.

If he is saying it immediately following a loss, shame on him. If that is what he is implying, then I agree with you. Some combination of the U, Tubby, current players, practice facility, injuries, etc. isn't working right now. Unless Tubby has los his fire or something, I have to believe that Tubby is better than this. If he thinks a new practice facility could help his recruiting and the U is willing to give it to him, more power to him and I think it would be a HUGE boost for the program.

As for Tubby leaving. You never know and with the struggles this program is having, it wouldn't suprise me if Tubby bailed. However, he has said that he and his family love it in Minnesota so hopefully that keeps him around long enough to make this program take the next step. I have heard rumors that Tubby wants to end his career here with the condition that Saul takes over the head coaching position when he steps down which would be ok with me. It just depends what rumors you want to believe and what is actually going to happen.

That's what I said on GPL and everyone jumped down my throat. The dude is in the process of building a house down there. One would think that means at the very least he won't be going anywhere in the next 3-5 years. Yes, I know there are reasons for building a house aside from staying in a location long term, but it sure looks like this is a scenario where Blais will be in Omaha for the forseeable future.

I posted an article some months ago where he indicated he has considered ending his career with UNO. The Blais or David Letterman ;) is getting up in years and I suspect he will plant himself in Omaha for several years and finish out his coaching career.

Edit: And I must say the Blais has done an amazing job with UNO and is no doubt a candidate for WCHA Coach of the Year.

The feeling I got (and this was due to some rumblings I thought I heard) was that Blais would coach for about 5 years, grooming Guentzel to be the next head coach, then retire and let Guentzel take the reins.

I hear that MTU might sign up MeanEgirl to play center. Hey, she's at least healthy and can sorta kinda skate...

Too late, KFAN stardom has already gone to her head. She's refusing to get in the corners and do the dirty work.

Or is it Dirty work......

Re: MTU @ MN: Whose coach gets fired first?

Blais would come to Minnesota in a heart beat, and if you think any different your crazy! He has wanted this job ever since he came back to college hockey, plus he is from Minnesota he wants to get back to his roots, his homeland, Gods Country! He would leave UNO tomorrow!

Dean's contract expires after the 2014-15 season so that would be 6 years. I think he'll get the typical 2-3 year head coaching extension after that. There are obviously three head coaches on the UNO coaching staff, so it makes complete sense that when the Blasier retires the job goes to an asst. head. But to whom is the tough call Brent. Both Hastings and Guentzel are former Omaha Lancer head coaches, both are two time USHL coach of the year. Mike Hastings stands alone in two significant categories though. He has NEVER had a losing season as a head coach and is the winningest coach in USHL history. IMHO it could go either way. Hastings the consummate local Omaha coach with huge GM connections in the USHL or Guentzel with years of experience in the WCHA. My guess is Mike Hastings since he was basically hand picked first by Dean Blais. Mike Guentzel came on staff a year later. IIRC Lucia was pretty surprised by the Hastings move too.

EDIT: I really like what the Blaiser, Alberts and Kemp have done to really build a strong support base at UNO after support for the program was waning only three years ago. Within the next year UNO will most likely will begin plans to raise funds and construct their own 7000-8000 seat multipurpose arena with two rinks. They have 3 years left on their lease at the Quest. I see this program becoming one of the top winning and recruiting hockey programs in the WCHA for a long time.

IMHO my money would be on Hastings too. Guentzel doesn't seem to even be considered for most head coaching jobs, including the search that brought us Lucia. Apparently a pretty good assistant but no one really wants to give him the reigns and I'd be willing to bet Blais isn't any different. Maybe that's why he brought in Hastings since he realized Guentzel wasn't right for the job.
