MSU Spartan recruiting

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

I bet it's more likely he wants to play for MSU more.

I also hear that michigan has a terrible freshman class this year....maybe he doesn't want to play for a sinking ship.

great answer:)

I wish my black bears had such a "terrible" freshman class- 3 NHL draft picks, one being the canadian Junior A Player of the year, another that will probably be drafted next year, the son of a very good former NHLer etc... Gotta love the MSU/UM rivalry!;)

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

well Michigan is loaded with talent so perhaps it would be difficult to crack thier line up?

Would this be technically "smack" or "trash"?

Slartibartfast: Come. Come now or you will be late.
Arthur: Late? What for?
Slartibartfast: What is your name, human?
Arthur: Dent. Arthur Dent.
Slartibartfast: Late as in the late Dentarthurdent. It's a sort of threat, you see. I've never been terribly good at them myself but I'm told they can be terribly effective.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

no just fact, not intended to offend anyone. Michigan is loaded.
It will be a great rivalry as always. MSU has some excellent players as well.

:). Yes, you and your wife Red Robin remind us of this frequently. Question is I guess, loaded with what, exactly?

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

We ask, we receive.
Thank you Rico.

Honeybaked's U16 - D Joshua Jacobs
===========================
Scouted on July 16-21, 2011 @ 2011 USA Select 15 Festival
Joshua is a potential stud on the back-end. He’s big and intelligent all-purpose defenseman with smooth mobility and layers of defensive polish. Encompassing skater with a long and fluid stride. Sees the ice well and crisply puts the puck onto his mates’ tape. Has great hockey sense and instinctively understands what he needs to do in all-situations. Textbook defender utilizes his feet, stick, and awareness to suffocate his man and angle them into submitting over the puck. AHR Rating: AA

Affectionately called J.J. by scouts in attendance, Jacobs is a multi-faceted defenseman with a projectible frame, smooth mobility and high-end hockey IQ. He projects to be the total package on the back-end in that he will much up a lot of minutes matching up against the opponent's top offensive line and he will also stimulate offense and play the powerplay. Today he was challenged by several strong forwards on Team Red and Jacobs never flinched and effectively controlled them.

Scouted on January 22-23, 2011 @ T1EHL Showcase-Chicago
Jacobs is a dominant defender who is rarely if ever rattled and makes crisp outlet passes up ice. He is big with a long powerful stride and has no problem back checking and negating the opposing teams scoring chances. He looks for hits and makes sure they are delivered with a little extra authority. He is an NHL prospect and we are inclined to move him into the first couple rounds territory. AHR Rating: AAA

2Another Scouts Notes: Joshua has size and skill. Defensively sound with an offensive upside. Showed vision and passing skills. A fluid skater with mobility. Intriguing prospect ? will only get bigger and will hopefully expand upon his strong attributes.

Scouted on November 5-7, 2010 @ 2010 Bauer Invite
Solid play from a solid player, who has a bit of a nasty edge to his game which we love. AHR Rating: AA

Scouted on November 5-7, 2010 @ 2010 Bauer Invite
Another Scouts Notes: A big, mobile and tough defenseman. Makes a good first pass under pressure. Balanced and strong. Not a flashy player, just a solid defender that can make the first pass. AHR Rating: AA
Scouted on July 9-14, 2010 @ 2010 USA Select 14 Festival
From Belle Tire, he skates exceptionally well, he moves the puck well, he jumps into the play and has the ability to slow things down. Clearly one of the top d-men at the Festival. AHR Rating: A

Additional info:

Plays for Honeybaked midget minor; expected to play for US NTDP next year with the 17 year olds, will come to MSU in the fall of 2014.

Potential first round draft pick in 2014

Considered MSU's most elite level recruit in several seasons.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Excellent Excellent!

Kid sounds like he will look great in green and white. Can't wait to see him out there.

Hopefully Anastons can pull in a couple more solid recruits for 2013 or however many more we need.

EDIT: Ack! 2014 is a long ways away. I just hope we can hold on to him for that long with the canadian major juniors lurking and waiting in ambush.

Yep. While this commitment is good for the fragile Spartan fan psyche - gotta remember that after his NTDP-U18 season he'll be contemplating what to do in Fall of 2013. Boucher didn't want to spend a year in what he probably considered a demotion (Youngstown).

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

MSU picked up a BIG recruit for 2012, a 6-3 defenseman from Florida - an earlier article on RJ Boyd.

Add: He's a transfer from Sacred Heart and NHL draftee of the Panthers.

Dont get to excited. He had the worst +/- in the entire USHL last year at minus 26. Did it in only 33 games, which would have been about a minus 50+ if he played full season. Was a minus 2 in game Friday night for Inidanapolis...

Was also written up as the worst player in Floridas camp this year and is regarded as a mistake pick by their org.

Not being negative but he is not a player that will help the program turn around.

Hey we did say BIG, not BIG TIME ;)
I'd say he's come along way after having never donned skates until after age 10. I guess the Panthers see him as a work in practice.

I would verify the size. Saw several games and not as big as Mike Gunn who is listed at 6'2". Not anywhere near as good either.

If Florida could take the pick back they would.

This from a talent analysis

"He is a project player whose most compelling asset is that he is a Florida-born player in the Panthers system"

"His transfer away from the NCAA to the USHL bought him some ice time, but he has yet to take full advantage of the boost. He has a long way to go to make it to the NHL, and at this point must be considered a marginal prospect at best."

"Boyd (Ft. Myers) struggled and his confidence looked to go down big time"

"Notes on the local kids: RJ Boyd struggled. Not quite sure what the Panthers see in him"

Hey that's great Hoky; we have one thing in common. We can read.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Why does anyone value the opinions of Florida's scouting staff? They advised management to pickup a mediocre backup goaltender and gave him the starting position along with starter money. They're paying 3rd line regulars like they belong on the first line. If Florida says he looks bad, it may be a sign of good things to come.

Iwanna know why hokey has written several paragraphs on a guy not worth a second look.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

With 5 Defensemen expected to return next season, plus a solid group of 3 committed as 2012 freshmen, Michael Gunn has switched his commitment to Northeastern.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

And there goes another ... REALLY hoping to turn the corner on getting the next quality goalie to commit.

Jared Rutledge ... well, let's just say there was a need and the obvious proximity involved.
