MSU Spartan recruiting

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

5 Freshmen

The latest count for 2011-2012 is 5 freshmen coming in. 4 we already know about.
Could the 5th be a defenseman?

MSU picked up a goalie commitment for 2012, Jake Hildbrand. His numbers were decent as the second netminder for Sioux City, starting about 1/3 of their regular season games.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Did we know about this player? from the Muskegon Lumberjacks site ...

•Joseph Cox (6-0, 170; 1/7/94; Chelsea, Mich.): Cox amassed 40 points (16g-24a) with Compuware’s AAA Midget Major team last season. He served as captain of the Team USA U-17 squad that took gold in the Five-Nations Tournament in Huttwil, Switzerland, last summer. Cox is committed to Michigan State University.

Yes, this would be a great pickup. He and Ferrantino were teammates for Compuware and were #'s 1 and 2 in scoring for the team.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Well, he's still on Heisenberg's list for 2012, at least...

Earlier today, I also got word that Reid Boucher, who was the leading goal scorer for the U.S. Under-18s at the World Under-18 Championship, also will be headed to the Sarnia Sting. Boucher, who was selected in the fourth round by New Jersey, has one year of high school left and was slated to play in the USHL next year before heading to Michigan State in 2012-13. Looks like plans have changed and Sarnia has itself another huge coup, while college hockey takes another hit.

I'm going to head over to a corner of my apartment and weep for a while. I hope this dude's information is completely wrong.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

You know what? I want players here who want to be here, not those who view it as a stopover before they begin their illustrious NHL careers. I want players here who care about being excellent students and excellent athletes. If you don't want to be here, well then, someone else does.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Everyone needs to cool their heels a little. Dozens of bloggers are falling over themselves using phrases like "Word is that ...", "I have heard that ...", even "any second now ..." and recently you've seen "done deal". There is STILL no word on this actually happening.
My theory? It all started when he visited Sarnia this week, and 3 days back some guy wondered why he hasn't signed with Youngstown yet, leading to speculation that he's forgoing his two-year plan and instead jumping right into the OHL.

Hey, I love what he could bring here. If he waffles and decides to come here, great! He's gotten bigger, has a nice scoring touch and can give us a year. If not ... he's all but made it clear he'll play one season here and move on. So if the rumors prove true, we lose a year from this guy.

Nobody should panic.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Whatevs. Nice not knowing you. I assume an "Education Scholarship Package" is similar to what you get in baseball if you wash out? Good luck kid.

I seem to recall it's financial aid and other resources for college.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

More like "financial aid." Kid was just sold a boatload by snake oil.

He's going to be a hell of a hockey player. It's just really unfortunate he's not going to be radiating that greatness while in a green and white sweater.

I fixed your post. This is just getting ridiculous.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Well, it's not often Spartan hockey goes after talent from non-traditional hockey markets like Florida. It's perhaps less often that MSU looks for transfers from other programs. Definite uncharted territory for us, but the kid has size that can't be denied.

I'm excited to see him in a green and white sweater.

Re: MSU Spartan recruiting

Also learned that MSU picked up a big-timer (a 2013?), choosing the Spartans over Notre Dame and Michigan . I suspect we'll hear about him soon.

well Michigan is loaded with talent so perhaps it would be difficult to crack thier line up?

I bet it's more likely he wants to play for MSU more.

I also hear that michigan has a terrible freshman class this year....maybe he doesn't want to play for a sinking ship.
