Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

Anyone seen Darkest Hour? Any good?

I've heard it's excellent though not from anybody I really trust.

There are red flags all over it. It will be very easy for it to slip into hagiographic idiocy.

But the true story is so great it could also be brilliant. It's all up to Oldman.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

Had some free time this week and saw the following (so far):
Logan. I hadn't seen an X-Men movie since the original (and parts of it's sequel, but never the whole thing), but sorta knew of what had gone on in the story to not be lost when watching. Sure enough, I wasn't lost. I thought it was a good bookend to the Wolverine storyline, and the future (-ish) setting allows for some continued use of Wolverine.

Rogue One. It felt like it was the perfect set up to A New Hope. All it was missing was some film grain to match the original. The attention to detail (for Vader especially) fits perfectly in the days before ANH. Governor Tarkin was kinda noticible as CGI, but for a dead guy, he acted great.

Neither film are going to make the AFI Top 100, but they're both good additions to their respective series.

No one around here is playing it. I have heard mostly positive reviews but a few said it was a poor adaptation of the real events. Since I love that period in history I look forward to seeing it and deciding for myself. One thing that is almost universal among those who have seen it: the Best Actor category at the Oscars will be Gary Oldman and four men he mentions in his acceptance speech.

That's $6 billion worth of dreck. With the purchase of the Fox IP they'll probably account for 30-35% of the box office in 2018. I'm sure Bob Iger loses sleep at night worrying about that dreck, then he loads up boxofficemojo and looks at the returns for his movies and drifts off into a peaceful slumber.

Lighten up Francis.

Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

I trust Disney with the franchise far more than I trusted Lucas.

Maybe...but that is like saying you trust a serial killer to watch your kid over the child molester. I mean sure, technically you are right but most likely you are still screwed ;) :p

Cant wait till we get that TI-88 origin film! I gotta know the truth behind him!! :D

Bully for them though I dont begrudge them fleecing the nerds. Just not my cup of tea really anymore.

Technically theyd be dead, not screwed in that scenario...

I don't think Disney is a serial killer when it comes to stuff like this. They run their empire efficiently: high cost but high quality. And they don't cross the streams -- they're not going to market SW down to the kids the way a certain Self-Anointed Super Genius did. Disney never lets the left hand know what the right hand is doing. I'm sure they're running extremely lucrative child trafficking and narcotics operations under separate cover. High cost but high quality.

I disagree but that is fine. Disney doesnt hide who they are or how they do things. They are to movies what Apple is to computers. (well actually they are worse than Apple but I cant think of the perfect analogy at the moment) Every year they put out the same product changed up a bit and the masses buy it up like it is candy. If I was a stockholder I would be happy as clams but as a moviegoer I find most of their stuff rather boring and repetitive. (have for years...going back to when even Miracle came out and they kind of Disney-fied it) Just a personal preference dont expect others to agree.

It isnt like any other studio is any better mind you they all play the same stupid games. Great for my pocketbook but still kind of sad. As the studios get bigger and bigger it will only make things worse. I will watch movies at home (much like I do sports these days) or focus more on TV or older films.

Again that is my preference...Disney, WB and the rest of the studios wont miss me much ;)

This is the criticism I love the most. "They're safe, they're formulaic, they're repetitive." 'Why didn't you like The Last Jedi?' "It was way different than I was expecting."

Makes sense.

I disagree with this. I think Disney focus groups the f-ck out of every step they take. They aren't actually a corporeal entity -- they're marketing that became self-aware. So they look at SW and they figure out that people want progression so they give them progression. If they took over the David Lynch catalog they would produce perfect little low budget quirky gems of weirdness. If they took over Westboro Baptist they would come out with an absolutely inspired GODS HATES FAGS advertising campaign that swept the Clios.

Disney gives the people what they want. Someday we're going to discover that the GOP and Democratic parties are actually wholly owned subsidiaries, along with their international properties the Communist Party of China and AQAP. Disney's genius is they only impose on you what your own heart's desire is. For a price, Ugarte; for a price.

Today is the 40th anniversary of final cut edit for Animal House. God bless John Landis.

I havent seen The Last Jedi so I havent said any of that. Thanks for playing...

Hell one of the few reasons I still plan to see that film is because it takes chances. I may not like what comes of them, but I would rather they try something different and fail then put out the same film again. I have been consistent about that for years. It is why my tastes tend to go against the norm. It is a personal preference and not one I expect others to agree with. For some reason it tends to tick people off (certainly gets your panties in a twist :D ) but that is their problem not mine. They can like what they like and I can like what I like.

Dont get me wrong if I see Remember the Titans on TV or plenty of other Disney Shlock I watch I and love it. (not so much Miracle...probably because I have watched the actual game and plenty of docs which are way better) I am not going to pay for it though and each time they make the same film it loses something for me. And while I keep using Disney's name because they are best known for it they are more representative of a growing trend in Hollywood...one that was bad enough 10 years ago but has been kicked into overdrive the last few years.

You said the same thing I did you just said it a different way. They put out the same thing all the time because that is what the masses want. Like I said, I dont begrudge them that they should do what will make them the most money. I speak only for me and I find it boring. If the masses wanted something different Disney would course correct.

Disney prints money because they know people want the familiar, the easily digestible and the loveable. They have a formula that works. The formula comes from the focus grouping you mention. They see what works and use it. It is a brilliant strategy...it just isnt very exciting ;) They have taken the idea of the serial and turned it into a behemoth. They are the platinum standard.
