Re: Movies! The Last Jedi: Ragnarok

I don't see why. The big studios are never the ones producing the interesting and original movies or taking chances. They've always been the Pablum Purveyors. It's what they do. Why does it matter if there are only 4 instead of 5 or 6? It's still going to be a Big Mac coming off that conveyor belt.

For the same reason why all the airline mergers have basically destroyed smaller airlines making prices suck or the experience sucks. If only Disney, WB and Sony are out there making films no one is going to finance anything. Lets not forget that all of those big studios own a bunch of smaller studios (Fox Searchlight, Buena Vista, New Line) that they are supposed to use for creative Indy style stuff which also end up making the same boring crap just at cheaper prices.

I have read enough over the years about the games all these studios play to know that the bigger they get the worse it is.

I can see that, but (1) it just doesn't cost that much to make or distribute a movie anymore -- it isn't a 747, it's a drone, and (2) the more Hollywood dies the fewer slots there will be, meaning more talent will be joining small outfits or just winging it on their own.

Hollywood and the flourishing of good movies are not necessarily inverse, but they sure aint direct. It's entirely possible that Hollywood dying will be IBM and DEC gobbling up all the proto-computer technology in the 50s and 60s only to get completely as-sf-cked by disrupters in the 70s, thus exploding the quality and breadth of the industry.

Fewer big players means an ever more insular and vulnerable power structure just begging to be toppled completely.

No one is toppling Disney or WB. WB is about to be bought by AT&T. (and they have enough TV and movie money to last til rapture) Disney owns so many franchises and TV stations that they will be fine. Hell they have basically stripped ESPN down to a gas can with wings cause they are sick of it losing cash. If they ever got desperate they could just make a new Star Wars film or start another Indiana Jones project and they will be in the black before the end of the week. These corporations are too big to fail now.

And IBM didn't go out of business, either, but they did lose their grip on the industry.

WB and Disney are always going to make billions churning out their dreck, but nothing says their dreck will always be the only first run movies available outside of major cities. The whole movie theater model itself will probably change significantly with people now having perfect resolution and enormous screens in their home.

The problem is how to deliver the 1% of worthwhile movies to the 1% of worthwhile people living outside the 1% of worthwhile places.

Because you may have an idea for a campy space opera and the three largest movie studios pass so one of the biggest franchises in cinema history never gets made; Harrison Ford remains a really good carpenter, the Indiana Jones trilogy never happens and an entire generation of nerds never gets into animation or graphic design. Industrial Light and Magic? Never exists. Terminator 2, Jurassic Park etc etc never come to be. That's why consolidation in any industry is bad.

As long as Road House still gets made I'm good.

I truly believe the answer to the question of "why are we here?" is "so Road House gets made" :D

I wont get too deep into it but I went to the advance screening of Justice League tonight. I enjoyed the heck out of it. It is a fun popcorn superhero flick that doesnt try to be anything but that. Scooby I hope you like it :)

Saw Murder on the Orient Express last night. Enjoyed it immensely. Lush scenery and costuming, good acting (for the most part).

It's good to see the Golden Globes has seen fit to nominate the side-splitting Get Out for Best Comedy. That was a laugh a minute.

It looks to me as though the movie's producers made the strategic category choice to run against a weaker field. It worked for The Martian which won "Best Comedy or Musical."

Apparently SF and Horror do not get respect when they run in the Drama category.

Plan Del Fuga (Getaway Plan):

A thief expert with blowtorch is hired by a group of the Russian mob for a bank assault.

Good flick. One twist was revealed a bit too early, but it panned out. Nice little heist movie. The ending has you wondering a bit, and in most cases I don't like that, but in this case, it works. It depends on how you interpret the main character
