MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

No! No no no no no no. No.

Bad idea. Just as Star Wars suffered trying to make its prequels worthy, it's tough to build the necessary suspense to make any of the drama unfolding on screen mean something to the audience. You have to get 10 of 10 in every other facet of the movie process in order to make them even semi entertaining.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Netflix has a documentary on 3/31 titled "Five Came Back" about 5 Hollywood directors who went to war in 1942 and came back to direct great films
Frank Capra
John Ford
John Houston
George Stevens
William Wyler

Just guessing
It's a Wonderful Life
Battle of Midway
The Battle of San Pietro
D-Day films and Concentration camp films.
The Best Years of Our Lives

BTW, if you've never watched San Pietro, do so. Houston pulled no punches.

First Matrix was awesome.
Second one was underrated. The Architect scene was glorious, IMO. All mental.
Third one was subpar at best. Lots of screaming and bullets, and an elongated death scene don't make for a good movie.

I hope no reboot.

I need to consult a physician because we agree right down the line.

(I always mix you up with Handy for some reason, though -- which of you is my one eyebrowed baby when it comes to movies?)

Depends on the movie. ;) I like a lot of bad movies (oftentimes because they are so bad, like Rock Of Ages). If it helps, I loved the Dark Knight and The Departed. Those two movies usually polarize the critics.

The question is, are you threatened by me not* liking them? Somebody out there gets their panties in a twist whenever I say one of their ice cream cones actually tastes like as-s to me. I haven't quite figured out why my opinion of a movie has anything to do with theirs, but apparently they are linked by spooky action at a distance.

As for liking bad movies, you can have my Buckaroo Banzai, The Item, and Road House when you pry them from my cold, dead fingers.

* In retrospect I now grudgingly like TDK, particularly if you cut every tedious "action" scene (which granted only leaves about 15 minutes of footage). TD is still the least competently written, acted and directed high budget movie in history. It's the definitive example of talented people mailing it in.

I may make fun of you for not liking (or liking) a movie.

As for Road House, that is an awesomely horrible movie (as opposed to a horribly awesome movie like Machete). There is a difference in those two descriptions, btw. ;)

I am never threatened by what others dont like. I will mock you incessantly for it though ;)

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Hey, Buckaroo Banzai is a stone-cold classic. Anyone who calls that "bad" just isn't a fan of that sort of campy humor. Not that I've seen everything he's ever done, but John Lithgow's best performance, in my opinion.

Likewise, so is Big Trouble in Little China.

Rec for linking the two.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Saw KONG: Skull Island last night. C+/B- for a grade.... You expect a monster movie and you get a monster movie. If that's your thing, it'll probably score higher for you. Kong's scenes were the best in the movie by a wide margin, as they should be. He also had more development than any of the human characters. Kong vs the other monsters is worth the price of a matinee at minimum. John C. Riley's character was well played and funny. Sam Jackson's arc was kind of bizarre. You really have no clue why he is who he is. If you have some explanation to this, the movie comes together is a much better fashion.

The movie suffers from a good bit of "horror movie stupidity", where parts of the plot require characters to purposely avoid using common sense. Also there is some clunky exposition because this movie has to tie in to Godzilla since shared universes are all the rage now.

Like I said earlier, I think this is worth seeing on a Cheap Ticket Tuesday. Just grab some popcorn and munch away :)

Big Trouble in Little China in is no way, shape or form a bad movie. It's - for the time - high budget camp, and it was done right.

Yeah this reboot was set up specifically to remake Godzilla vs. King Kong...which I dont see the point to but most likely will be fun. My dad loves Kong movies and Godzilla movies (not to mention Planet of the Apes) so the last few years have been heaven for him :D

Does Kong have a ridiculous bait and switch with an actor like Godzilla did. I was almost in Godzilla as much as Cranston was ;)

Everyone billed goes on the expedition to Skull Island, so they have their screen time. The script really prevents most of the cast from doing anything with their time though. Bree Larson and Tom Hiddleston are just along for the ride. Their characters don't go anywhere over the 2 hours. John Goodman's character starts out well, doing some heavy lifting in the world building department, but just kind of peeters out as the movie goes along. Sam Jackson plays the kind of B.A.M.F. character you expect Sam Jackson to play. He does have a nice call back to his Jurassic Park character at one point. But paint by the numbers more or less. His character does change if he's given some exposition however, so the seeds are there. They just don't turn out IMO.

This is Kong's movie however, so people like your father won't leave disappointed. They want a giant monkey to steal the show and they get a giant monkey kicking arse.
