MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

So I was reading a story and a parenthetical comment about Warcraft caught my eye.

Was Duncan Jones, the guy who did Moon, really behind the Warcraft movie? Jeebus. Talk about huge swings in a career.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Let’s face it – most of us first indulged beer with Busch Light, Old Swill, Keystone….so the first time we tried (pick your favorite IPA) it was a huge shock. I started earlier than some though in making the switch. When I was 19 I worked at Tonka Bottle Shop the owner made us sample the good stuff he had on hand (including wine, scotch, etc.) because he wanted us to know what we were selling. It didn’t take long before Sam Adams was the gateway to Sierra Nevada, Stone, Goose Island, etc., etc.

My dad used to always have Pabst, Schmidt’s, Old Style, etc. in the fridge. I remember the first time I came home from college and there was instead Summit (or something like that). Turns out all those years he hid the good stuff and said he wouldn’t risk having it on hand because he knew we’d pilfer it. He did the same thing with technology. Suddenly he had a large screen TV and Bose surround system. Bastage!

Pig's Eye (bottle only!). My first gateway was Blue Moon, I guess. For true craft, probably Sierra Nevada.

Sounds like John Wick 2 has been getting great reviews. 95% on Rotten Tomatoes! I didn't expect that.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Saw LEGO: Batman today.

I enjoyed it. Not quite up to the level of the original LEGO movie, but I still laughed a ton. Probably a case of the bar just being so high with the original. The movie is really self aware and takes a lot of swings at Batman himself. The jokes are quick and numerous. Also has a ton of voice cameos that are very solid. I'd suggest checking it out if you enjoyed the original

I do want to see that. Prob wait for Netflix, though. Got good reviews in the local rag.

Obscure request: The Red Turtle. Got called a masterpiece by the Mpls critic. Sounded interesting. If any of you see it, please review?

La La Land.

Liked the story, liked the music, loved the cinematography. Stone and Gosling were great outside of when they had to sing or dance, then they were outclassed by everyone around them. I swear a couple times I saw them take a glance to the side to see what move they need to do next.

Brubaker:

R Redford goes undercover as a prisoner, when in fact he's the new warden. Tries to clean up a corrupt prison. The ending is puke-inducing cliched (as in the specific moment, and you'll know it), but the rest of the movie is pretty good. Bonus: Nic Cage and Morgan Freeman are also in it, first credited appearances, from what I've read back on.

Girlfriends Day

It has Bob Odenkirk as a greeting card writer (which is why it caught my eye) who needs to write the perfect greeting card for a new holiday. It's supposed to be a dark comedy, I guess. Frankly, it's a waste of time.

My sole takeaway from that movie was that in his day Redford was one fine looking man. It really comes across as naive in the extreme now.

I had no idea Cage was in it.

That movie didn't hold up. Not worth watching at all.

The social worker / lady side kick was particularly maudlin. All the characters were just summer stock. Villain, hero, tragic black pawn who is sacrificed for the mighty whitey king, slick-cynical governor. Zzz.

Just watch the Reynolds' Longest Yard. Same story, but 50x more entertaining. (Even if the homophobia is creepy.)

Blue Jay

Two former HS sweethearts happen to run into each other in their hometown, and reminisce.

It's 90 minutes of painful awkwardness, that increases as the movie goes on, and ultimate awkwardness at the climax. I mean, you feel very uncomfortable at how things progress, as they are portrayed. It's a very real performance. According to imdb, most of the movie was improv. However, because of how real the awkwardness is, it makes it that much more well done. Definitely recommend.

I assume you know the legend about how he wasn't cast as Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate?

Director: "Let's put it this way - have you ever struck out with a woman?"

Redford: "Whatddya mean?"

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

Related: Brad Pitt looks a LOT like Redford in Redford's prime. It's uncanny.

Re: MOVIES: New Ideas Welcome!

I saw the Oscar nominated short films live action. they weren't really short, but all of them were pretty good. better than in past years. The one about the French immigration officer was excellent.
