Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

I meant there's not much of a plot line.

I'm a bit younger, but I remember the 70s quite well.

Sure there is. Kids get out of school for the summer, party. A story as old as time itself.

Doesn't make it a plot.

And that story is applicable to every generation - which is why I identify with it so strongly and it made me a bit melancholy.

Anyway...

Watched Pearl Harbor for the first time tonight. Caught it just a few minutes before the attack and don't believe I missed anything important.

Pretty incredible portrayal of the battle and aftermath.

The Doolittle raid portion wasn't necessary, but whatever.

Cheesy love triangle too.

Having HBO coz GoT is dangerous as I get sucked into movies I probably wouldn't otherwise watch.

As God is my witness, Spider Man: Homecoming was really good.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

Dunkirk. It was excellent. I don't want to say too much because it just follows the real timeline of events. It's not like you're going to be surprised by anything if you know even a little about the history of the evacuation of Dunkirk during WWII, but Nolan wove in a couple plot points. Kenneth Branagh was really good as the rear admiral orchestrating the evac. His part wasn't overly indulged in terms of screen time, but he performed his roll really well.

There's also a simple device/trick that Nolan uses in the movie to help pull the audience into the events. It's almost imperceptible through most of the movie, and could border of being overused in a couple spots, but I thought it very effective and building up the earnest feeling he wanted to draw from you.

The Batman Lego movie:

Holy crap that was awesome. Great movie on its own, the references within....might have had to catch my breath a few times, I was laughing so hard.

Sorry if this is old news, but 2019 will see the release of Bond 25 with Craig as its leading man. I thought he was done, to be honest.

You send any actor a blank check, and 9 times out of 10, he's going to take the job. Money talks.

"You expect me to walk?"

"No, Mr. Craig...we expect you to sign!"

13 Cameras:
Young couple rents a house, unaware the landlord is always watching. REALLY wants to be a non-B-Movie, but the cliches and subpar acting overtake it. A for effort, D for execution. It's not bland acting, but the script really limits the actors' capabilities. I probably wouldn't bother with it, if I were you.

It's sad how much I'm looking forward to this. The Room is quite likely the worst movie ever made, and this send up of it could be amazing.

The cast (one of the Francoi, Rogan) is a problem. It's probably going to wind up being about them because everything they make is inside jokes about them.

This is the End left a really bad taste in my mouth, especially since it came out around the same time as The World's End, which was great.

This Is The End was a great movie to see once. The element of surprise/etc was key to that movie. Once you've seen it, though, it drastically falls off.

John Wick 2 was fairly decent. If you liked the first you'll like the second.

I thought it was more vulgar with the violence at times. But more stylized. I liked the ending.

Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry:

Fun heist movie. Ending kinda sucked. Came out of nowhere. Always wondered about this one as a kid, given the title, as in WTeFF is this about?! Finally got a chance to see it. Good afternoon killer.

Havenhurst:

A recovering alcoholic checks into an apt building where you get a second chance, but not a third. Borders between gore/suspense, some of the plot jumps ahead with no explanation, the ending was horrible. Came across as "Oh, so that's the way it is. No reason. Just accept it." Blech.

Moonlight:

Well done movie. It's a slower one, but very poignant. Touches on more than a few issues. Highly recommend.

Devil's Bride:

Anna is a 16-year old in a village where women are accused of witchcraft. It's based on the witch hunts on Åland, Finland in the 1600s. Very heavy movie. Well done, good plot/subplots. Would recommend. (it is subtitled)

So. Not this one.

Actually a great movie. The poster hilariously misrepresents it. And the Criminologist from Rocky Horror is the villain.
