Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

30 years after killing Goose, Maverick feels the need. The need for...Ensure.

He's lost that loving feeling. Unless he takes Viagra.

/cuz he's old. And impotent. Get it?

"Take me to bed or lose me forever."

"What? I missed that last part. And who are you, anyway? Have you seen the remote?"

Mookie knows women and can't understand them to save his life :p

In 54 years I have pieced this together:

1. If you go on the assumption that they're just like men you will be fine 90% of the time.

2. But the other 10% you will wish you'd never been born.

3. More variance within than between.

I don't think it ignores that fact, I think it's beside the point. But I am certainly willing to rethink the CW on Jobs seeing as my point is Gates and Zuckerberg were really just glorified chucklehead businessmen who cashed in on others' genius.

I don't anyone at this point who doesn't think Jobs was an as-shole. But Edison was an as-sole. You can be a terrible human being and still be transformative.

Jobs did the same thing they did. It isnt like he was the one programming the stuff Wozniak and his people did most of the heavy lifting. Jobs was the pitchman who was getting high and disavowing his daughter while the people he loathed created the Macintosh.

You dont get to pretend Gates and Zuckerburg are nothing special and then in the same breathe make Jobs seem like he has some value. He doesnt. He is a snakeoil salesman just like the rest of them and like most people of his era went from being a drug addled revolutionary to be a greedy corporate ********.

No discussion of the supposed Top Gun sequel?

:D

That movie has been in the works for a long, long time now. They want to have him as a Top Gun instructor showing up the new hot shot coming through the program.

That movie would be both horrible and might be a lot of fun. Mostly horrible.

So he takes Tom Skerrit's role? Meh.

Re: Movies: New Ideas Welcome II Prequel Reboot

A friend posted a movie site joking about the proposed script.

Apparently it's set 25 years after the first film, opening montage shows scenes from the first film, then Cruise being dishonorably discharged from the Navy for orchestrating Tailhook in '91. A CGI enhanced James Tolkan helping get the disgraced Maverick a job post Navy.

And of opening credits flashes to today, where we see a not-in-USAF shape Cruise piloting an old cargo plane filled with crates leaving Chinese airspace headed to the US.

On a layover he runs into Val Kilmer in the airport, as Kilmer is headed to Miramar to teach the newest class. Kilmer has him tag along to the base where Cruise starts mentoring a pilot that reminds him of himself.

:D

How was I sure the site was joking? Because it also mentioned a weird 10 minute long shirtless volleyball match between Kilmer and Cruise in the airport terminal with both their dad-bods on full display.

*vomits*

I don't think Gates was a snakeoil salesman. I think he was a skeevy businessman who found a special platinum poker chip in the Magic Fingers in his sh-tty Albuquerque motel and still can't believe everybody let him fly to the NYSE and cash it.

I always liked the idea of Jobs because, well, his kind of BS appeals to me, and also like I said if being a do-chebag obviated one's chances of being great that takes out 99% of businessmen and 95% of artists. Throw in adultery and it takes out everybody with a dick except Aquinas, who had his own problems, and Jesus. Maybe.

Getting back to the start of this tangent, I just watched "Silicon Cowboys" and I agree it is well done.

The original is a much better Indiana Jones 4 than the real Indiana Jones 4. Extremely entertaining escapist fare.

Understatement.

Cage can act when he wants to, or he can take an easy paycheck when he wants to. He gets a lot of hate because he tends to pick bad "paycheck" movies.

This. I thought he was awesome in Bringing Out The Dead.

Cage can't really act, he can be Cage and if the role needs Cage then he's very good in it. c.f. Jack Nicholson ever since The Shining or Al Pacino ever since, Jesus, about 1980.

But we're comparing him to this, ferchrissakes.

This. I thought he was awesome in Bringing Out The Dead.

His over-the-top style worked for Leaving Las Vegas (which I know you're too squeamish to watch) and got him an Oscar, but you'll never get me to say that Richard Dreyfuss wasn't robbed for Mr. Holland's Opus that year. Much better, more subtle performance.

That's a fair argument, though I don't know if I necessarily agree with it.
