Have a book report to do on Billy Budd so I watched the movie instead. Had today off so I said what the hay and I can't believe the number of times I passed by that movie when it was on. Great story with an equally great cast. Robert Ryan was perfectly cast as master-at-arms John Claggart and they probably couldn't find a better choice than Terrence Stamp as the protagonist. Peter Ustinov directed, produced and co-stars. Should've taped it so I can watch it again but I can wait.

I love Conrad but you made the right call. For all his choice of the perfect word and the genius that English was his third language yet he may be the most succinct and exact writer of it in history, reading him is like playing chess in a perfectly still room, whereas that movie kicks some serious acting as-s.

Apparently I need to watch "The Power of the Dog".

And considering how much I've heard "Being the Ricardos" panned incessantly from everyone I know the acting nominations seem odd.

I've yet to find a Campion movie that I liked, and The Power of the Dog didn't change that. However, that was the family choice at Christmas. But even all of the women in our group basically sat there, as the closing credits rolled, and said, "huh, so what does that mean?"

"If the movies blow, just don't go."

Yeah.

You kind of don't understand Christmas at my house. A Christmas Day movie (usually in the theater) is the tradition, and it goes like this.

1. Three daughters in their thirties argue among themselves as to the movie we're going to see.
2. Oldest son in law is instructed to not even bring up a suggestion.
3. Wife supports daughters' ultimate decision.
4. Watch movie
5. Everyone is either crying, or looking at one another and asking what the fuck that was about.
6. Oldest son in law says, "I told you we should have watched ...."

People in their thirties are old enough to be told home truths. But, yeah, your mistake was to be outnumbered.

I saw Don't Look Up (good), Dune (cromulent), and the Bond one (cromulent). I thought Dune was just a TV movie and Emmys not Oscars. Maybe they don't even make the distinction anymore?

Dude was a theatrical release along with HBO Max.

Watched That Thing You Do! for the first time in a while last night. Still surprised at how little fanfare it gets compared to other Tom Hanks films, especially it being his directorial debut. It has a good cast, good soundtrack, and there aren’t many, if any, scenes that don’t move the story along. I wouldn’t call it underrated, because it gets praise by most critics and reviewers, but it’s mostly just sort of forgotten. Probably doesn’t help it gets sandwiched between Forest Gump, Apollo 13, and Saving Private Ryan in his filmography.

Also learned there’s a directors/extended cut that adds about 45 minutes to it, but the consensus seems to be that while it does add
background to some characters, it ends up bringing down the film as a whole.

If you get tired of the pre-game bs tomorrow(5 mins and I'm done with it) check out Born Tomorrow on TCM at 3:15. Judy Holliday(won the big O)was priceless playing along side Broderick Crawford(helluva actor)and William Holden(nuf sed).

As somebody who hates Tom Hanks I will say I really enjoyed that movie.

Steve Zahn as Lenny is absolutely hilarious with some great lines:

"Know what that is?"
"Presidential flashcards?"

"Are you crazy? A man in a really nice camper wants to put our song on the radio! Gimme a pen; I'm signin', you're signin', we're all signin'!"

"Oh I'm not here with these guys. I got a pig in competition over in the livestock pavilion and I tell you...I am going to win that blue ribbon!"

"Who are your influences?"
"Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters."

"Oh, there he goes off to his room to write that hit song "Alone in my principles.""

I am actually watching the extended cut as we speak. (I watch it in parts while I walk on my treadmill) and some of the scenes explain the gap in scenes that can be jarring. (including why they all of a sudden don't work at Villapianos and how they all knew Guy before he played in the band) It is good stuff but not needed.

Steve Zahn went to my rival HS Cooper (a few years before me) and he was very close to the drama teacher there who my girlfriend knows very well. (his daughter is her best friend) Zahn never lost touch with them and wrote something really awesome when the teacher died like 7 years ago. Same teacher also taught Mo Collins though she went to my high school Armstrong. (again before me) Not too bad a run for that guy!
