"If the movies blow, don't go." -- Jay Sherman

Jay Sherman: I came up with a list of diseases I'd rather have than watch this movie. Scurvy, leprosy, bubonic plague, and the winner is SPASTIC COLON!
Duke Phillips: We just got a call from the Spastic Colon people and they're not happy.

I mean they made a sequel to Mary Poppins are you really surprised? Of course Warner Brothers is making a Willy Wonka prequel so its spreading...

Dude, WB is already 2/3rds the way through a Harry Potter/Dumbledore prequel trilogy with their Fantastic Beasts movies. It spread long ago.

She at least wrote those books (or stories...I forget/never cared cause I never read Potter) and the Potter nerds wanted those films. (ask my gf) WB is doing it with Hunger Games too although there is a novella they are basing that on. No one, and I mean NO ONE wanted a Cruella prequel or Wonka Prequel. Its like they forget the Oz origin film...

Di$ney has been the king of crappy sequels since I was a kid...but this is a whole new level. And now it isn't just them it is every studio because they all have streaming services to fill. That is why Amazon is paying half a billion to make an LOTR series for no reason and HBO Max has like Eleventy Billion GOT shows in the pipeline. I mean this is getting out of control even by Hollywood standards.

The new Hunger Games movie is based on a full novel, not a novella. Much like the third book in the original series, it wasn’t good.

And the Fantastic Beasts movies are just work with Rowling as a co-writer on the scripts, no novels existed prior to those movies.

But it (Songbirds) was written after the fact...and conveniently after the studio said they wanted spinoffs. Not sure why I called it a novella...I knew it was a full novel I was gonna buy it for the GF but she didn't even know it existed. This stinks of the studio convincing Collins to write another story so they can make a film for it. I can't speak to quality cause I never read any of those books ;^)

I thought FB was a book but I guess it was probably just stuff mentioned in the other books or something cause she has answers when I ask her questions after she drags me to the films. (only FB films...I have seen maybe 3 hours of the main Potter films total including the ending) Honestly I tune the GF out when she talks Potter much like she tunes me out when I discuss my weird nerdy stuff. We both tune out our friends that gush over Marvel Films/TV ;^)

Either way...this is all getting stupid and studios are just watering down their products to the point they have no real value in entertainment anymore. Just because it works sometimes (Marvel) doesn't mean it will always work. (Star Wars, LOTR, Transformers, Aliens) Sooner or later the Law of Diminishing Returns will catch up with you especially since theaters aren't cheap (unless you get a subscription pass) and streaming is becoming more and more popular especially with long form storytelling. Some stories don't need to be told, and better yet some stories no one wants told. I mean what is next an origin film for IG-88? A trilogy of films about Cypher from the Matrix? I mean seriously...

And yeah it was always bad...but this is turning the knob to 11. Bad/mediocre sequels and spinoffs are one thing (Fast and Furious says hello though I find them fun as heck) but this is beyond that now. I mean I figure we are weeks away from a live action Mr. Toad's Wild Ride announcement which is set for a Memorial Day Weekend release to go up against the Chester Cobblepott Goonies Prequel ;^)

With international markets you can now aim at 7B people rather than 300M people. Oh, it's worth it for them!

This is true. The Global Box Office is where profits are made, for sure.

That said, Transformers proved that even international audiences have their limit for hot garbage.

I know...hence why John Cena is apologizing to China because he dared called Taiwan a country or some such nonsense. Also Di$ney/Marvel is getting cancelled there a bit as well for something lame...and Gal Gadot is in hot water because of comments about Israel/Palestine. (as is Mark Ruffalo)

It was bad enough when Hollywood was just pandering to our lowest common denominator...now they pander to everyone who has a computer and goes on social media. Gotta make sure China isn't mad because 1.5 billion people is a lot of revenue!

Aren't there only like six different plots anyway?

Rags to riches
Riches to rags
Fall/Rise
Rise/Fall
Fall/Rise/Fall
Rise/Fall/Rise

Even fewer:

Shunned outsider becomes super powerful (mawkish good version)
Shunned outsider becomes super powerful (fun evil version)
Powerful person becomes even more super powerful But Loses Everything
Supernatural being longs to be mortal
Supernatural being loses powers and wants them back

Note: also works with Greek myths, which are all comics ever were anyway because humans have been the same since they crawled from the primordial ooze.

Hey now, every so often there is the films where literally nothing happens...no rises, no falls, the characters are just there staring at nothing and saying stuff that is supposed to sound profound and deep but really isn't. You know, the crap film students make/love but no one else does unless they want to sound cultured :^D

I love those films!!!

The best way to evaluate art films for those who think they are a waste of time: if you think they are, then, for you, they are. Nobody's making you watch them.

"Ow My Balls!" is showing in 97% of theatres, television, and streams. Go see that. That way we are both happy.

I was gonna mention you...but I figured everyone would know I was implicitly implying you ;^)

(to be fair some of them are good, but not nearly as many as the Film Nerds think)

I actually just watched the four Jean Rollin vampire movies and found them... not great. They are lionized as a high point of 60s French art cinema.

I just liked the boobs.

I mean, at their best, aren't all vampire movies mostly about the boobs? Except maybe Interview With the Vampire which is about how all male Vampire's are homosexual?
