Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Kyle was really kind of lying sociopath who stated he found what he did fun. Much of the movie was fabricated or embellished just for story purposes.

Jesse Ventura was even able to win a lawsuit over a lie Kyle told about him. (A lie that helped dramatically boost book sales) Kyle actually bragged that he was in New Orleans while it was flooded shooting 30 people, which didn't happen. The book the movie is based on supposedly had the proceeds going to a veteran's charity, while only 2% actually did.
Here's the lesson -- write the book.

If you write the book, you get to have Bradley Cooper play you as a lethal sniper, or Tom Hanks play you as a heroic, self-sacrificing ship captain.

You don't write the book, you take your chances.

Which is artful in its own way. Lies within lies.

ted 2:

Went into it with low expectations after enjoying the first and expecting it would make me laugh. Mission accomplished for the most part. B-.

That's about the grade I would give it too. It just seemed to miss the mark of the first one, but still was funny. I would say it was on par with Million Ways to Die in the West.

The Watering Down of Star Wars Continues!

It is bad enough we are getting a Boba Fett movie (supposedly) but now there is a Han Solo prequel (cause Star Wars prequels rule) and Vader is rumored to show up in another film. Disney is going to show Peter Jackson how to REALLY milk a franchise for every dime.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

All I want is a Goddammed Blu-Ray version of the original trilogy where Han shoots first. Is that really so hard for the mouse to understand?!?

If they gave the fans what they want, they know we wouldn't have any incentive to stick around for the other stuff.

Jokes on them. I'm not getting involved either way.

I have that on DVD. It probably won't look any/much better on Blu-Ray, given the age of the original movie.

Ditto. I don't have any of 'em because of it. I'll take the originals, or nothing.

The Babadook:

While not a big fan of the genre, this movie was sufficiently creepy enough. Kid reads an evil children's book, book character comes to life. The characters were really annoying for the first 1/3 of the movie, but if you can get past that, some really good horror movie moments. Lots of shadows and suspense, which is what I really enjoy in a horror movie. The ending...I am still deciding if I like it or not. Right now I'd say "meh."

Meh. Ep 1 ruined the franchise. Once you're in the toilet there's no coming back.

The only bad part was Child Anakin. Now, that's a HUGE negative. Whiny little brat, F him. I dug the Sith story, etc. Ep II...I'm not as blah on Jar Jar as I was on C-3P0. C-3P0 was an abomination, IMO. The wooden acting killed that movie, though. Ep III was pretty darn good. Prob the 3rd best of the 6 so far.

Me either...I will see Episode 7 to give it a shot but the offshoots im not touching unless something amazing happens.

The only bad part was child Anakin? How about turning the force into midiclorian count?

There had to be a reason where the Force was stronger than others. That explained it. *shrug* I'm cool with science. Better than some intangible emotion quotient. Think about: "the amount of love in your heart." GAG

I don't agree. It took an interesting, intangible quality and cheapened it. One of the many poor decisions Lucas made.

Again, if he were to quantify it with that intangible quality...."more love, more caring, more whatever" would it be worse? IMO, YES.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

It is better to leave some things unexplained. The thing that was cool about The Force was it was mystical and mysterious. No one was complaining about how some were stronger than others, it just was what it was.

When I saw The Phantom Menace at first I dug the medichlorian idea cause I like to know "why" too...until I watched the original trilogy again and realized how lame The Force became. Han was right, there is no mystical force behind it all some stupid blood aliens have control.

Lucas screwed that whole film up but it didnt matter, the nerds had waited so long they saw it 12 times anyways. They didnt care that Vader became Jesus, Obiwon was a whiny manchild who killed out of anger or that the movie looked like a cartoon.

I'm saying, just leave it alone. Make it a brute fact: there is something called "The Force." Allow the viewer to fill it with anything they want, so religious people can say "oh, that's God," and animists can say "oh, that's the Universal Soul," and libertarians can say, "oh, that's the gold standard." Let everybody bring their own raft of associations to it, thus strengthening it with their own internal experiences.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I'll wait and see how the reboots are reviewed before I decide whether I'll see them or not.

Maybe the Solo one will be good. Will depend on the actor chosen and the tone. Never know...

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

The the Phantom Menace was awful, not just by Star Wars standards but by general movie standards.

Even Portman was terrible in it. Then you have the kid who was awful, a waste of Liam and a pretty cool character, a waste of a cool villain who we never really get to know, Jar Jar the special-ed alien (comic relief that wasn't funny) and most especially, the DRY politics.

Give me an outline, don't spend so much time on politics. We get it, politicians are always scheming...
