Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

By the end, it knew what it was. No doubt it had its weak moments, though. It was a tough road to get there.

Yeah cut out about an hour in the middle and it is **** near perfect. Still better than the crap that was Godzilla by leaps and bounds :) (so you made a movie about Godzilla and he spent half of it swimming...what is this The Hobbit 4? :D )

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Outside of Pratt the rest of the cast was pretty terrible imho. Opie's Daughter was brutal in every scene she was in and had zero chemistry with Pratt when they were together. The two brothers were annoying as hell...like when the one who was autistic half the time talked about their parents maybe getting divorced (which was a plot point that had no value and never came up again) and the older brother basically douching him out over it. Everyone else was either completely stupid, evil or both. The movie should have been called "Chris Pratt and the Island of Bad Ideas". ;)

The last half hour was a lot of fun and made up for most of the other 2 hours at least. Personally though I wish the dinosaurs had killed all the people and then fought. Whoever wrote the script must have been drunk or never met a person in real life because not one of the characters was likable or believable. It was an island of Nedrys :D I put this a half step above Jurassic Park 3 but leagues behind the original.
Were you expecting Jurassic World or The Godfather for quality of script and acting? The people weren't written as the main attraction to the story. It can be a little frustrating to see people who've turned in great performances in years past put in what's generally a bad performance - or a decent performance for a badly written character. To this I'm thinking about Vincent D'Onforio or much of the cast to the Star Wars prequels.

Regardless, I went into that theater with expectations of over the top dinosaur violence. I got that to no end.

And while I'm not really a fan of his (don't hate him either, though), the cameo used in the gyrosphere scene was a nice touch. It seemed to fit with the motto of the park.

Lastly, just because I'm thinking about the movie experience last night, the extremely young kids in that theater still bug me. One toddler even started crying in the middle of it. It might have even been a baby. Regardless, people should know better than to bring such young kids to a movie like that. They're just not equipped to handle the graphic material at that age.

My parents took me to Jaws in the theater. I was 6.

I might have turned out normal...

I've never seen any of the Jaws movies. They just never interested me, growing up in a home with a corn field behind my house and the nearest ocean over 1,000 miles away in all directions. Is the original very graphic or do they cut away during the kill shots and just let imagination take over from there?

It's not really graphic by today's standards.

The movie is more about the unseen menace that can appear at any time.

To your other points, I was 6 and we were vacationing in Northern Wisconsin on a lake.

You couldn't convince me that there wasn't a shark out there. Or behind me in the shower that was the shape of a dive cage.

I still bring it up when the parents are feeling a little too proud of the job they did. ;)

I wasnt expecting the Godfather (jesus tone down on the hyperbole) but I was expecting better script writing then American Pie sequels. It isnt like Jurassic Park the original wasnt full of awesome action and dinosaur violence and the did not have characters that at least pretended to be make sense and say things a normal human would. I think the scriptwriting sucked, thankfully no one is going to that movie for the script.

I kept my standards low when it came to the acting/writing and it didnt disappoint...the fighting dinosaurs were fun. But come on, half the lines Pratt was saying seemed like a MST3K style rifftrack of all the stupid things the script had the people in the movie do. (like hunting the dinosaur without actual weapons) It was like a preview of the directors commentary or something ;)

I didnt say the movie was bad, I said the writing was...and some of the actors like Bryce Dallas Howard. She was brutal though I suspect that was the character. The scientist was useless and D'nofrio was hamming it up good playing the mustache twirling villain. Saying all of that doesnt mean I expected it to win best screenplay nominations (that straw man has really jumped the shark btw) it means that we could have started a thread on this board and made a story that made more sense while still having big dinosaurs attack and kill each other and people! The movie has one purpose...it could have done said purpose more efficiently. Or, it could have killed everyone off cause THAT would have been an epic ending and made the characters have value ;) The movie gets a B which is slightly higher than Jurassic Park 3 got and about where The Lost World stands in my mind :)

(the above of course is in my humble opinion, I am not telling you how you should feel)

Scooby,

I really want to see Spy can you give me some of the things you liked best?

Well, I think you have to like McCarthy and her humor. If you don't, don't bother. It was pretty much a showcase for her. I liked one of the other CIA guys that was uses as a foil throughout the pictures. It had some pretty funny scenes. It was just a fun movie. Nice to shut the brain off for an hour and a half and watch a popcorn flick. Also liked that it was done as a James Bond Spoof. Little different setting for comedy and they played all the angles. The "Q" part was awesome.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I love McCarthy so good to know thanks! I am a big fan of the director as well :)

This. I am still uncomfortable swimming in open water.

Probably why I am such a good water skier...too afraid to fall and be left by the boat ;)

Saw the trailer for The Martian.

Looks like it could be good. An old fashioned science adventure story -- cool.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Finally saw Frozen. Figured I heard the dam song so many times, might as well. It was decent. Can definitely see why it was a big hit.

Also saw Death Wish. Had very low expectations, but I have to admit it exceeded those. The morality angle was a little unexpected, and appreciated. Sort of a pre-cursor to Boondock Saints.

You will not regret buying the book. It's not marvelous writing by any means, but a great story and also a fun story behind the creation of the book. Or I suppose, just watch the movie. It will be natural to pretty much use the book as a screenplay and nothing in the trailer indicates they did otherwise.
Edit: scrolled back and saw the cartoon - yeah, that's about it.

Yeah saw that before Jurassic World, it looks real good. Also kinda made me think it was the lost story from Interstellar since it is Matt Damon alone on a planet ;)
