Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

It wasn't as good as the first - which was legit hilarious.

Like I said though, I laughed. Doesn't mean it's a good movie or that you'll laugh.

I'll say Birdman is well, WELL worth watching.

If you do Horrible Bosses 2, it's on you.

;)

Fair enough on HB2. I had ZERO expectations on the first one. I laughed my arse off. I liken it to "We're The Millers." So the 2nd one can't be that bad. I hope.

I loved the Millers. Like you said about HB 1 - Millers had no business being as good as it was.

The one liners and dry quips appeal to my sense of humor.

And as for Millers, the end credits prank was gold. That was really a nice touch. :)

Have the Imitation Game for tomorrow, and started Ken Burns' "Baseball." Since it'll be all the rain here, I expect a movie marathon.

Do yourself a favor and skip the final episode of Baseball. Prior to that it's fantastic; the final episode is terrible.

Watching Se7en and a line made me think of Fish and Flag: "He's a nut bag. Just because he has a library card doesn't make him Yoda".

Nah, final episode is fine. It just seems worse because recent events seem less historic and important than those from fifty years ago. The 10th inning has decent parts on PEDs, Dominican players, and free agency. Overall I usually go through "Baseball" and "Civil War" once every two years or so, both are great. "Dust Bowl" and "Prohibition" are both really good too. "The War" is good, but it feels like WWII stuff has been covered in so many places it doesn't stand out as much; "The West" is good, but it feels like they try to cover too much; and I never finished "Jazz" because I honestly don't care about jazz music.

Prohibition was very good.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

I liked it cause it gave Batman a happy ending but the idea of Batman quitting (twice) ticked off a lot of Bat fans.

Well the whole premise of Frank Miller's Dark Knight graphic novels was that Batman had quit and grown old, while Gotham fell into crime and decay. .

The Imitation Game:

Cumberbatch was excellent and the movie itself was a solid watch. Definitely recommend.

Smilla's Sense Of Snow:

Child dies, neighbor woman thinks it's fishy, investigates on her own. Starts off as a decent conspiracy movie, but too many plot holes and cliches as the movie carried on. Average, IMO. FTR, on imdb, the director even said the movie didn't turn out as well as he had hoped; had trouble adapting from the novel.

Right but those were Elseworld tales, and even though they are beloved (I hate them but that is cause I think Miller is a misogynistic creep) they were not supposed to show a heroic Batman. (Miller has said as such, Batman is as evil as the villains) The Batman in that story abandoned his post, things went to hell and instead of trying to help using his influence and resources he went full on crazy and decided his old enemies should die and Superman needed to be stopped. Then they fight and he dies while getting his "victory" and comes back because he is the BatGod. The entire history of the Batfans vs. Supesfans and "who would win in a fight" is traced back to that comic book. To be fair though, Batman: Year One by Miller is great and Batman: Begins uses it heavily in its script.

BaleBats quit (the first time) because of the Dent Act and cause he gf blew up then quit (the second time) because he had an ego problem which should have gotten him killed but survived and got to bang Anne Hathaway. It wasnt like there wasnt crime in Gotham after the Dent Act and the people didnt need him, he just said screw it. And what about post Bane...there is going to be a huge vacuum of power in that city and there are now hundreds of violent psychos walking the street not to mention billions in property damage and hundreds dead. But hey, Catwoman only sold him out and now is using him to escape her crappy life so leave some young cop the Bat Cave and no support he should be fine...some hero.

Huh...I guess they are similar. Both have characters called Batman not acting like Batman and "dying". One got a happy ending, the other was just a jerk who liked getting kids killed ;)

Foxcatcher, Bennett Miller (2014)

Bizarre, tragic, upsetting.

I think that's next on my list (non-streaming).

All Good Things:

Very loosely based on the Fred Durst case, starring The Goose (Gosling) and Frank Langella. Given those actors, yeah I checked it out. Decent movie. The Goose turns in another great performance, and Langella...well, solid as ever.

The Station Agent:

Dwarf's only friend dies, dwarf wants to live like a hermit at the small train depot left to him in friend's will. Neighbors have other ideas. Peter Dinklage stars, Patricia Clarkson co-stars. John Slattery (Mad Men) (!!!) has a bit part, too. Great movie. Overall a drama, but some awkward/dark comedic moments. Definitely recommend.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Headhunters:
Corporate headhunter/art thief steals from a mercenary. Oops. It started off great, but when the merc drives a semi into a parked car, which contains the art thief, driving said car off of a huge cliff, and the art thief is still alive? Nope. Stop right there. If this were a B-movie (or neo-B-Movie like Machete)...fine and dandy. Ridiculous. I shut it off right then and there. It was bad even if it were trying to be a pure popcorn flick.

The Man Who Never Was:

Solid movie about the British planting fake WWII invasion plans on a dead body, letting the Germans find him. Based on true story. Enjoyed it, good companion piece to The Imitation Game, knowing what one knows from that movie. Information is indeed power.

Re: Movie Thread: New, Rental, Streaming

Narc - Good cop, bad cop, not sure cop with Jason Patrick and Ray Liotta. Don't remember this one coming out at all and fully expected a cliche-driven mess. Instead I was very pleasantly surprised and glad I took the time to watch.

I thought it was okay. I remember it coming out, but I don't think it did well at all.
