I don't think they expected a rehash, but more of the same feel. Star Trek was always about a competent ship that had some level of organization and hierarchy among its crew. The new one is more like five main characters who run around on their own doing their own things and somehow the ship doesn't blow up out of incompetence in the process. Which, I can understand, is more like the adventure-ish feel of Star Wars rather than the sci-fi-military feel of Star Trek.

Mind you I'm OK with both new Star Trek movies. There both good for filling two hours, and if I want regular Star Trek there's a few hundred episodes over multiple series to choose from.

Well, yeah. They know that the way audiences are moving right now, a traditional feeling Star Trek movie wouldn't have sold very well. People want action at the theater these days and wait for the other types of movies from Netflix.

Honestly a big part of it is overseas markets. They don't get American/western social interaction in the same way we do, but running and explosions translate well to any culture. So the studios are going to aim for what gets them the largest gross overall.

Into Darkness was everything bad about Abrams' movies rolled into one. His schtick with having secrets that must be revealed was grossly overused - what was the point in hiding Khan's identity for most of the movie? Why wouldn't Spock prime reveal far more information? Etc. Combine that with lens flare, gratuitous explosions, and the now standard off camera mass murder due to said gratuitous explosions/crashes/etc. (Just because it's not shown, doesn't mean it didn't happen).

It worked in the first one because it was an origin story. It didn't work in the sequel at all.

Wrath of Khan is a movie I've never seen, so it didn't bother me in the least. Also, I've only ever seen a handful of Abrams' movies, so it's not a trend that's grown weary on me.

Besides that, movies that try to build suspense shouldn't divulge all of their secrets in the opening act. Some of them will be there for people to see if they're paying attention, others not so much.

Secrets should only be kept a secret if there's a point to it. There was no reason to hide Khan's identity at all in that movie. That was just Abrams doing his thing of putting stuff in his "mystery boxes" because that's what he does.

It was a "holy ****" moment for me. Better than knowing the entire time.

I've seen every one of the movies and it didn't bother me in the slightest either.

Pretty much anyone who followed the production of the movie knew it was him right about the time Cumberbatch was named for the role. (like when Marion Cotillard was cast in The Dark Knight Rises) Add in it was the sequel and it was easy to figure out. Hell I knew and I didnt care about the film at all :) I had no interest in watching JJ's version of Wrath of Khan which was great as is.

French Rage nailed it though, nowadays these films are made for the overseas audience. A movie can do alright here and make half a billion in Asia.

If his identity had been known the entire time, he could have actually done something during the course of the movie rather than being a glorified Odd Job.

Runner Runner

Should be re-named "The Fall Of Full Tilt Poker: Cliched Edition." What a mess of a movie. I knew this going in, but curiosity and all...Cookie-cutter of the protege-takes-a-fall story, using a greater (as in grander/bigger) story as the backdrop. I wouldn't bother, unless you really have some time to kill. This movie makes "21" look like "Rounders." Yeah, that bad.

Saw Galaxy Quest again recently. Fun bit of fluff, decent acting, clever plot idea executed well.

And thus we get 80 Transformers and F&F movies even though they each stopped having plots about 5 movies ago. On the plus side, it's a Golden Age for comic book movies.

This is mostly true. I've been disappointed in seeing some films disappear from the theater quickly here (of recent note Spectre, Maze Runner, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mocking Jay Part 2...) due to competing with locally made films. Highest grossing films ever in the Philippines:

Ok I will post my full review in the dedicated thread but...Holy crap they did it!! Star Wars was epic! Second best of the series behind a Empire...and it is close!
