Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Me too. Spectre was the second-best of the Craigs after Casino. Now Skyfall -- there was a steaming pile.

See, this right there is up there with you watching the Bachelorette. The only bad Bond movie Craig has done is Quantum of Solace, and that's mainly because it wasn't a Bond movie, but a Bourne movie with Bond plugged in as the main character.

Casino Royale is the best of them, but Skyfall was also really, really good. If nothing else, it gets points for Adele's theme over Sam Smith's craptastic falsetto number.

This post wins the thread. Although I thought the villain in Skyfall sucked it was still 10 times better than QoS and better than most of the craptastic Brosnan films.

Have yet to see Spectre yet :(

Funny you say that since Spectre is effectively all the worst aspects of villain psychic precognition abilities from Skyfall except trying to tie it through all the Craig movies. On top of the worst "romance" of all Bond movies.

Batista as Mr Hinx was the most enjoyable part.

Also the villian's plot is QoS sucked. Ooh, a big sinister organization, what are they planning to steal? Gold? Diamonds? No, water. Well, I suppose water is essential to life. Are they going to steal all of the water in the US, or Europe, or China? No, Bolivia. Well, OK, I suppose even a small country has a lot of money and would be willing to pay a lot for their water. So you're going to steal all of their water so they have no choice? No, like 50-60%.

This. It's like the writer(s) went, "Hmmm, it's 2012, we should probably do a Bond movie about cyberterrorism." *shrug* *create cartoonish cyberterror villain*

But it was still entertaining, which is all you ultimately want from a Bond flick.

That reminds me Bachelor should be starting up pretty soon. Thanks! :)

I don't know what QoS was trying to be; I only know it's the worst Bond since Timothy Dalton got run out of town.

Skyfall was terrible because of the unrelenting, hamfisted, mawkish to the point of laugh-ability of the Mommy Issues relation of Craig and Dench. As a general rule, adolescent male cartoon characters should not attempt mature, emotional themes. It only embarrasses everyone involved. Escapist trash is great but it needs to remain at the kids' table. Trying to graft serious emotion onto Bond is like listening to Joe Biden talk about high art -- stay in your genre, dude.

So I am 2 movies into the Hunger Games (the gf is into them so I am catching up before the last one so we can go) and I just cant see what people find so appealing about them. Lots of emo whiny young people screaming at each other and talking/running. I mean I am sure the books are better but wow I am not sure I can stomach 4 more hours of this. I swear at parts the "actors" are so annoyed with the script they are barely putting effort into it...and the cgi at times is laughable.

Mind you this isnt as bad as The Hobbit but come on.

I liked them a lot, but IMO the original "Battle Royale" (Japanese movie) is much better, and more effed up. Not a fanboy by any means, but very much worth my time.

Read the first book and saw the first movie. It's as faithful to the book as any Hollywood movie is, but you are right that the book is better.

Having gotten the synopses of the last two books from my wife, not bothering to read them or watch the associated movies.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Well there is just no depth in the movies. We get almost no explanation behind the games, we get no connection to any of the characters and we know nothing of the motivations and machinations of the rebellion. My gf read the books so she filled me in, but this would be like watching The Lord of the Rings without explaining who Sauron is, the backstory of the Ring and Isildur, where Mount Doom is, who the Hobbits are or why Aragorn is important. The movie would just be for the people who read it...complete fanwank.

It doesnt help that I wish Pita would die and Katniss would be made a mute so I would not have to hear her half *** pretend like she cares about what is going on between screaming like she is in a Wes Craven movie and whining.

The movie misses out on a lot of what the book covers, so things you're complaining about are covered in the books. In fact, the first half of the book is spent prior to getting on the train to leaving for the Capitol, giving a feel for what life was really life, the hardships they endured and how life came to be like that there. Yes, the movie is faithful to the book, but that was also its failing because they had to cut some things for time and didn't find a way to add in any shortened scenes to explain those things they had to cut. Your gf may have given you some of those details, but she likely missed some of the questions you have. There's a psychological game going on between the Capitol and the Hunger Games participants that's almost completely missing from the movie. You get a small glimpse a it, but they don't really give the viewers a good feel for those complications. Oh, and it's Peeta, not Pita. :)

Either way, Peeta is a candyarse that is annoying. And I LIKE the movies. ;)

Well, yeah, he's a candy arse throughout pretty much the entire series. That's his role, opposite the macho Gale who also has a thing for Katniss.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Sounds like the typical problem with reducing a book to a movie: lose the interior dialog, depth of character, and anything not action-based. The movie can still be very cool, but is different and can lose the core of the book, like The Princess Bride or Ender's Game.

Re: Movie Thread: Grab Some Popcorn, Enjoy The Show

Plus the ending to the second movie is just so abrupt...whiny Pit Bread is taken which leaves Katnip screaming for him. Then she destroys the dome but somehow doesnt die despite being struck by lightning and ends up on a ship with Hippy Woody, the Greek God looking dude and the Bad Guy from Mission Impossible 3 where they tell her she is a Mockingjay and she freaks out cause she still needs some Pita Bread! Then they steal Phillip Seymour Hoffman's syringe and hot shot her and she wakes up where Male Gale (aka Lesser Thor and/or Joe Mauer) tells her District 12 is destroyed. Thank God they didnt live in District 5...would hate to lose The Mighty Ducks!
