Motorsports 2026

Since the old open wheel thread is over five years old, I figured I would start a new thread, and include all Motorsports.

NASCAR Cup and O'Reilly already two weeks old, with their third weekend starting at Circuit of the Americas.

Trucks are weekending in St. Petersburg celebrating the Indy Car season opening race. NASCAR Trucks and Indy Car are once again sharing weekends at some non-Cup/O'Reilly tracks.

F1 meanwhile is now concerned their weekend opening race in Australia could be delayed or canceled due to the new Middle Eastern conflict. All teams and equipment were booked to go through the Middle East on their way to Australia.

Also, I had to laugh watching the NASCAR Truck race today from St. Petersburg, Florida. In 2001, many NASCAR drivers were on record at calling the action at the Milwaukee Mile as "like racing in a parking lot," because of the lack of banking.

Twenty five years later, they're actually racing in a parking lot. 😂

Putin and Dump, economically isolating Europe from Asia one war at a time.

On the plus side, they could fly everything through Anchorage!

So the concerns about the cars and racing isn’t as important. Many F1 billionaires being screwed by the orange menace.

Didn't see it was a NASCAR truck race in the listing, saw "St. Pete" and thought "oh, I thought the Indy race was tomorrow?"

*sees "Stage 1" on graphics

"Nevermind" *click*

Man, the new Honda Aston Martin team is in big trouble. Honda is getting a lot of the blame, but I suspect that there is come real communications issues between them and newey. But it really looks like Alonso will finish his career as a back marker.

I loathe the stage racing and wish they would get rid of it. But IMO it's been a great race. I have always liked the Trucks (and O'Reilly/Grand National) series more than Cup.

Are they still FOUR SECONDS off the pace like they were in Barcelona?

At least Cup finally got rid of the winner take all playoff. The ten race chase is still worse than a full season championship, but it’s a step in the right direction.

I don't know if that is the case this time.

Last time, the McLaren was designed with so much aero efficiency, it never allowed enough air to cool the engine. And all Honda and McLaren did were point fingers at each other. Then, when Honda left, all the while McLaren always said they had a great chassis and it was all the engine, the McLaren was still dirt slow with a Mercedes engine. At that point, whatever problems were truly Honda's, it was pretty evident the overall problem was McLaren. And it certainly didn't help McLaren that Honda went on to win four straight championships in a well designed chassis.

Flash forward to now. Apparently, from what I've been reading, the Honda engine has a terrible vibration problem, thus breaking stuff left and right. Sure, there could be some cause related to how it fits in the chassis, but right now, I'm leaning towards it being purely an engine design problem. Remember, Honda is essentially starting out with all new engineers and designers. When Honda left F1 -- for less than a year -- all their best minds were poached by Red Bull for their new in house engine program. So, when they changed their minds yet again, they had to staff up with new and unseasoned folks.

As for Alonso, oh well. I like the guy. But his own choices and political machinations have been his downfall time and time again. He has burnt so many bridges. It's hard to feel sorry for him.

From what I’ve heard, the vibration is with the battery. Which is really odd. And given they are saying they don’t know what it is tells me all of the sensors are not giving data that says it’s from the engine- as that would be pretty easy to do a frequency analysis and see what on the engine is driving it.

One other tidbit is that the set up at Honda isn’t the same as the car- so if two parts are interacting and causing it- something is missing between the team and Honda.

Given that Honda eventually got the best powertrain in F1, I conclude this is a team failure- not just Honda.

If so, I'm sure Newey won't act like Dennis, and will be able to fix this quickly.

Apparently they will also be given some room against the homomologation papers depending on how slow they are.

It’s not permanent. But it’s hard to see them being competitive before Alonso retires.

Tyler Reddick goes back-to-back-to-back to become the first NASCAR driver to win the first three races of the season. Others have won three in a row during the season.

Aston Martin are planning on making Q3, and then retiring from the race before they can be classified. The vibrations are so bad they say they are risking permanent nerve damage if they run more than 25 laps.

So Cadillac won't finish last?
