Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

I included all teams and averaged their overall rankings using RPI.

1) HE = 221/11 = 20.09
2) Big Ten = 6 teams = 1 + 10 +15 + 28 + 40 + 52 = 146/6 = 24.333
3) ECAC = 303/12 = 25.5
4) NCHC = 209/8 = 26.125
5) WCHA = 313/10 = 31.3
6) Atlantic = 578/12 = 48.1666

Math? Wasting time till the next game? Watching ponies? I can multitask.

We're trying to figure out what we can throw on the ice for the North Star College cup. Polaris helmets? Chia pets? Bobble heads?

Make that 25.25 for the ECAC.

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

My team has only played 4 conference games, so I can't judge if the conference is competitive.

I'm going to go with the CCHA.

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

One of the things that has been bothering me is the reffing when a OOC team goes to HE. I've seen three of these games, and each time the HE refs were a factor in the visitor losing. It's something to think about, and it has left a bad taste in the mouths of more than one coach, I can tell you that.

And I notice that St Cloud loses a very close game and gets punished in the poll, but Quinnipiac loses to Merrimack and moves up.

If we bring enough spinning plastic lights everyone will want to throw those :D

Well technically... St. Cloud lost one and tied one at home (tie they lost in the pointless shootout) while Quinny won at home and lost on the road.

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

With that being said, who do you guys think the most competitive conference is today and will be in the future? And why?
I'll let you know on Selection Sunday. That's the day we can figure out who's the best....by calculating which conference sent the highest percentage of its teams to the tournament.

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

In some respects it was said earlier.

Look 10, 15, 20 years from now and see which conference has won the most NCAAs or had the most teams in the Frozen Four, etc... That is the measure of a strong conference, no???

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

I thought that out of the gate, the NCHC would be the best conference and over time, media coverage would help the Big Ten and Hockey East. However, out of the gate, the NCHC has not been as good as expected. Nebraska is ok. UND is down. Denver is down. CC sucks. The only team with a chance of going anywhere deep in the playoffs is St. Cloud.

I would rank them:
1) Hockey East
2) Big Ten
3) NCHC

Part of the issue with the NCHC is that a league of champions doesn't work. Its obvious that teams like UMD and probably CC will struggle long-term. Western Michigan and Miami are finding out what a real conference looks like. Then you have UND, Denver, Nebraska, and St. Cloud taking turns beating each other. Unless WCHA management was so horrific, I can't think of many ways the NCHC has been a winner for its league schools. The cherry on the cake will come when nobody but UND fans show up at the NCHC tournament. And if UND doesn't make, expect hardly any fans. Of course, the Big Ten and WCHA will probably see weak attendance showings too.

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

Here is how I rank them.

1. Hockey East
2. ECAC
3. Big 10
4. NCHC
5. WCHA
6. Atlantic Hockey

Re: Most Competitive Conference Post-WCHA Era

This is a tough one to call. If you look at the numbers, yearlong inter-conference play from about 8 years ago to about 3 years ago, you would think that there was very little difference between your average middle of the road D-I team in one league vs. your average middle of the road D-I team in another. Where the difference existed was at the top. The very best teams in leagues like the ECAC just could not compete with the very best teams in the old WHCA, HE and CCHA. That really showed up in the NCAA playoffs statistics. Is there more league parity today? How would we measure that going forward? Can we look at what is going on and predict? As an ECAC fan I am very pleased that our conference has elevated its play as to be a more attractive opponent for non-conference teams. It's very exciting for a very small, (largely D-III athletics) school like us to be able to attract major conference schools as non-conference opponents. It also helps to keep our program competitive. It benefits everyone. Here is what the playoffs look liked the past 5 years.

The recent history of the ECAC in recent NCAA tournament play is shown below.

RECENT RECORD IN NCAA TOURNMENT PLAY
YEAR - - - ECAC W-L - #FF
2009 - - - - - 1-3
2010 - - - - - 1-2
2011 - - - - - 1-3
2012 - - - - - 3-2 - - (1)FF
2013 - - - - - 8-2 - - (2)FF
2014 - - - - - - ? - - - ?

This year Hockey East has the best overall Inter-Conference record thus far. The league closest to them, thus far, is the ECAC at 21-19-8.

Competitive to me, means the teams that can vie for a championship, either league wise or nationally. What would the average rpi be of just the teams with records of .500 or better (top 1/2) of a conference?

HE refs aren't just bad when there is a visiting team, they are bad all the time. The difference is HE teams are used to it and OOC teams forget they are playing in front of bad refs and fail to adjust.

Someone's never been to an ECAC game! The refs are an absolute horror show almost all of the time. And if by some strange chance, they happen to not suck, it's definitely an accident. :)

Gotta love getting negative rep for posting this question with the comment "Sniff my crotch" with no sig. If you're going to neg rep for no reason, at least have the stones to sign it.
