Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

There was a very good discussion regarding the Gophers on beyond the pond yesterday on KFAN. If you happened to miss it, it's worth downloading.

Micheletti really called out the assistant situation and also the attitude of players like Schroeder.

Great Program

It would be hilarious if the U deciding not to lobby the capitol worked out in its favor. I don't think you will get any change this year...though I am one of the people who doesn't much miss the beer and booze being around. It will sell of the rest of the suites at TCF and the Mooch though if they allow for the booze to be there so from that standpoint it needs to be done.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

I think that in these lean times I can see the State mandating that he U change it's policy in order to generate more revenue for the entire U System so that more money can be devoted to other areas.

I think you're exactly right. Although, the Board of Regents have rejected liquor sales at on campus events, Maturi and his staff see this as a vital new revenue stream, along with on campus parking. Neither the state nor the University are willing to subsidize the athletic budget as they have done in the past. They have their own fiscal problems. The University subsidized the athletic department with $3.4 million last year which is counted as revenue.

And it doesn't look good to taxpayers when the university is begging for money, forcing people to take time-off unpaid, having layoffs and hiring freezes to pay a coach to sit at home while paying another one to coach. The U president wanted Dan Monson fired a year before he was fired, Maturi wouldn't because they were in the middle of trying to get state money for the football stadium and didn't think it'd look good to fire coaches and pay them to sit at home while asking for millions from the state for a football stadium. Once they got the money, Monson and Mason were gone.

Actually the University incurred a $6.5 million shortfall as a result of the buyout and coaching replacements in basketball and football which carried over into 2008. To help recover the losses, the University loaned the athletics dept. $4 million in 2008. Then in fiscal year 2008, Minnesota reported a $2.3 million positive balance because it was the first year of the Big Ten Network and a larger revenue sharing TV contract for the Big Ten conference with ESPN and ABC. As a result each Big Ten school received $18.8 million in revenue from the Big Ten conference in 2008, a $4.8 million increase from the previous year which really helped the budget tremendously because the athletics dept. had literally run out of ideas on how to cover the shortfall carryover.

I can see the Legislature opening up The Bank, The Barn, and Mariucci up to beer sales. With the Budget Problems I can see them telling the U to pretty much fend for themselves..... You are going to not sell beer because of X, Y, or Z reason and STILL come asking us for more money?????? I think that if they split Beer and Spirit sales 50/50 between Athletics and General ED accounts and I think that all would come out a head.

Is this podcasted or can you post a link?

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

How about Sam Lofquist? I really think he left at a bad time. I believe Leddy was out at the time as well and really left the gophers short handed. I think the power play would have been different had he stayed this year.

I think in retrospect, Jay Barriball going down in Nov. after the UAA series where he had a three pt. weekend, (Schroeder had a 4 pt. weekend at UAA) really hurt the Gophers more than most people think. Looking back we had 5 games with 1 goal losses and a tie after his injury. If they win even 4/6 with Jay in the lineup, the Gophers have home ice for the playoffs and they're much closer to an NCAA spot. It's kind of ironic too that Lofquist was the one that ran into Jay, and then he left too. IMO, that was a real low point in the season and the adjustments never really came together.

I think this carried a lot of weight in Maturi's eyes as he reevaluated the Gopher season. Even though they're behind the eight ball and can't afford to replace Don Lucia anyway, it sounds good.:p

Not a chance...no team in the Big Ten allows liquor sales for on campus sporting events...only freebies in the suites. The U is not going to **** off the Big Ten by doing something even Wisconsin wont do.

Re: MN Golden Gopher 2010 Offseason Thread

Update...2 goals in game 1 of pro career - both PP goals. Only 7 more and he will match his total for this year with the Gophs that took 37 games to accomplish.

Just checking the AHL website and see Jordan Schroeder is off to a good start in his 1st game in Winnepeg.

Has a goal already in the first 2 minutes of this game.

He wasn't including this season in the discussion of early departures. If he was, I'd have mentioned Lofquist and Schroeder.

The U is always looking to be in the lead on new ideas :p This is one I could get behind, we will see what the Legislature says, they are already considering the idea.

I thought Pat's comment about the asst. coach often being a point person for the players was good. IMO we need to replace Hill with someone who knows and lived through some of the history and tradition of the Gopher program, is able to communicate that to the players, and personally relate to the players and their development. It's too bad Mike Guentzel isn't still around because he was that type of guy.

His point about the new players having lost some of the understanding of what means to be a Gopher hockey player and wear the "M" is also valid. IMO much of that has to do with the "entitlement" attitude that some players have developed for various reasons and consequently view the Gopher program as just a stepping stone to the pros.

Eight of the 11 schools sell beer in their premium seating areas.

Wisconsin receives $450,000 from beer company sponsorships.

We had that then the stupid Minnesota legislature blew it all to hell by saying it's all or nothing.

I couldn't find a Big Ten "rule" online banning alcohol sales, so I doubt one exists. Especially since a majority of schools sell it in the premium seating areas.

.... attitude that some players have developed for various reasons and consequently view the Gopher program as just a stepping stone to the pros.

Only some players???
The rest better get on board fast and start playing like professionals.

If players don't feel like their college hockey program is the next step up towards pro hockey then either: 1) the program is not an elite college program; 2) the program needs fixing; or 3) the players need to have an attitude adjustment.
