MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

When I was in Atlanta in September, they had a Waffle House concession. I got a waffle with chocolate chips! I was wondering if the new ballpark would also have it.

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

I like Tony O's cuban and Kramarczuk's polish sausage at Target Field. Usually get one of the two, sometimes both if I've had enough to drink.

Ditto. Target Field is just incredible for food.

Sorry Jen, the food I've had at Miller was more like the Metrodome than Target Field. The brats were the same as they had at the dome. KC was just ok too.

All of the other ballparks I've been too I can't remember the food.

I forgot that I had the Cuban there - that was good too. Much better than the one at the Tampa ballpark.

I also forgot about the Kevin Rathburn steak sandwich in Atlanta (old ballpark, obviously), which was outstanding.

St. Paul Saints games are so much more entertaining to attend than Twins games, regardless of the ballpark. The Saints used to play in a park that had a train running right behind the leftfield fence, and the team would joke about it if one were to pass during a game. Also, the club took a lot of steps over the years to engage its fans, even with the new park. Twins games are just boring affairs, which are not helped by them being just so bleeping horrible.

Now they joke about low-flying planes approaching the Saint Paul airport. Saints games are so much fun, win or lose. "[enter opposing team's batter name here] is at the plate with two strikes and NO BALLS."

Plus, you might run into BFM himself.

MiLB > MLB, unless the stadium is an unredeemable pit (Portland). The players give a sh-t, the fans aren't hostile drunks (they're mellow drunks), and the baseball:crap ratio is significantly higher. A much more enjoyable afternoon at the park.

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

Back from a trip to ballparks 28 (Phoenix) and 29 (Anaheim).

Chase Field reminded me a lot of Miller Park. They had the roof open on Saturday night, but it didn't feel too bad (about 100 degrees at game time). Roof closed on Sunday afternoon, of course. I'm not sure I saw an usher the whole time I was there. They have all that crazy food (churro dog, chicken funnel cake sandwich, etc). Didn't get any of that, but I did see someone get a two foot long enchilada dog. The brisket was very good, as well as the blackberry margarita. Beer selection was subpar - couldn't find anything I'd identify as local. Dbacks fans... they seem kind of like puppies. They get very excited and loud, but they're not really sure why. It was the mascot's birthday on Sunday, and Artie the Artichoke was there, so that was a highlight. ;)

Angel Stadium... I can't believe general parking was only $10. And it wasn't THAT far away. Of course, a local beer cost me $14.50, so I guess it evened out. Food was just OK. Nothing inspiring. It wouldn't be fair to offer an opinion on atmosphere or Angel fans, since they played the Yankees, so every clueless idiot that goes to one game a year was there. People, if everyone sits back in their seat, everyone can see. If one person leans forward, no one can see, except that person. This is not complicated, and should especially be followed IF YOU ARE NOT EVEN WATCHING THE **** GAME. I actually "upgraded" my seat after the third inning, so I could see home plate (and yes, I did politely ask them not to lean forward). After Chase Field, the field here seemed tiny. I think it was 365 down the alleys? Sheesh. But it was an exciting (but long) game, and Aaron Judge hit a home run to give the Yankees the lead, so there's that. I thought the scoreboards - for having two large ones - didn't offer a lot of information and were poorly laid out.

Anyway, had a good time at both ballparks. Just found out a friend of mine is planning a trip to Miami this summer, which is the only one I have left. Woohoo!

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

Tickets are ridiculously cheap in Miami, which surprises me... not at all. Field level, low, for $30. I briefly considered sitting by the aquariums, but you have to call to get those seats, so it's probably more than I want to spend, even for ballpark #30.

btw, baseball gods, we need to have a talk -

Also, baseball gods, since you disappoint me on a yearly basis (and will again this year), could you please arrange Zack Greinke and CC Sabathia starts for this trip? And a Mike Trout walkoff would be a nice finishing touch. Thanks so much.

yeah, NOT ONE of those things happened. Sabathia's start got pushed back, Greinke's turn wasn't up, and Trout was hurt.

So I have one more favor this year.

Please, please ensure the Marlins hit a home run in the one game I go to. If I don't see the Home Run Thingy in action, all will be lost.

Heading to San Francisco this weekend, but the Giants are not in town. Is it worth it to go to an A's game, or is O.co as bad as I imagine it to be?

A's stadium: meh
A's fans: ++++++
Stomper: ++++++++++

If you don't have enough to do in SF (not likely), it's worth a trip.

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

Hit up Cleveland this past weekend.

Park was very nice. When you see it from the highway it's nothing special, maybe even a little on the ugly side just seeing the steel frames and lights from the upper deck, but the brick offices that surround it on the ground level give it a good look. Quicken next door looked like a nice arena, too. Didn't realize the AHL team plays there. Inside the stadium, I thought the concourses could have been a bit bigger, but even with a sell out crowd there weren't many bottlenecks. Their heritage park in center field is a cool area, with plaques of all the former Cleveland/Indians players in the Hall.

We had seats in the upper deck third baseline. Stadium is much more compact than Comerica, so even though we were in the same row as we were when they played in Detroit the week before, we were closer to the field. Only downsides were that the left field line was obstructed, and our aisle seats meant the vendors set up shop right in front of the view of home. Oh, and that despite having 2:30 in between innings to leave the section, people would wait until after inning started to get up and walk down.

Would have been better if the Tigers hadn't wasted a Verlander start, but still a good time.

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

Done with all 30. Went to the Nats/Marlins game on Tuesday. Pretty nice park - too bad more people don't visit it (although the neighborhood is not great). Got to see the Home Run Thingy in action, so that made my entire trip. Food selection was great, quality was subpar... or maybe I just made bad choices. I had conch fritters and little things that looked like guava and cream cheese pastelito egg rolls. Conch fritters were OK. Pastelito-type things were blech. Azucar ice cream was closed by the fifth inning, so that was a disappointment (but I did go to the one on Calle Ocho twice). I did have a delicious beer called Flamingo Ale. There were some Nats fans from Miami in front of us who had been to all 30 as well.

By the numbers - first game in each city:

Milwaukee - cannot possibly remember this
Minnesota - 8/6/1993
New York - American - 8/23/1996
Baltimore - 8/24/1996
New York - National - 4/19/1997
Chicago - National - 8/2/1997
Boston - 4/11/2000
Chicago - American - 7/15/2000
St. Louis - 9/27/2002
Toronto - 4/11/2003
Kansas City - 8/21/2004
Cincinnati - 9/11/2004
Cleveland - 6/23/2006
Detroit - 6/24/2006
Washington - 9/15/2006
San Francisco - 8/24/2007
Denver - 4/9/2008
Pittsburgh - 8/29/2008
San Diego - 4/29/2010
Los Angeles - 5/4/2010
Philadelphia - 4/19/2011
Tampa - 4/6/2012
Seattle - 8/10/2013
Atlanta - 5/21/2015
Oakland - 6/21/2016
Houston - 9/26/2016
Texas - 9/27/2016
Phoenix - 6/10/2017
Anaheim - 6/12/2017
Miami - 8/1/2017

Random facts: Went to 17 games in St. Louis and 8 at Wrigley.

My top 5 parks:
San Francisco
Pittsburgh
Detroit
Los Angeles
Baltimore or Wrigley.. gets a little fuzzy here

Memories that stick out: Chicago doubleheader... Cards/Cubs at Wrigley goes 15 innings with a walkoff by Sosa, rushed to the South Side to see Red Sox/White Sox and Esteban Loaiza (edit: it was Bartolo, not Loaiza) threw a 2 hitter.. and lost 2-1. The two hits were home runs. Had sat through a 4 hour rain delay at Wrigley the day before.

Ryne Sandberg hitting 2 home runs the day he announced his (first) retirement.

Ken Griffey Jr. Bobblehead Night in Seattle, when he was inducted to the Mariners HOF.

Opening Days in St. Louis, Boston, Tampa and Minnesota.

Mariano Rivera blew a save on Opening Day in Tampa and the Rays won on a walkoff.

Saw Bonds hit career HR 761.

Worst seats at any sporting event I've ever had.. upper level, last section of the outfield, Cardinals at White Sox.. bought tickets from a scalper on Fireworks Night.

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

The Metrodome not being in your top 5 hurts me.

Apparently it took me 3 years to want to visit another ballpark after my Metrodome experience. :D It was definitely memorable. I think we drove around it 300 times without actually getting to it. I'd never been in a dome before, and was freaked out about how you got sucked out the doors. We sat by an extremely loud Yankee fan who loved Bernie Williams. BERNIE! COME ON BERNIE! BERNIE BERNIE BERNIE!

Target Field, on the other hand, is beautiful.

Also, my top 5 does not include my actual favorite stadium, which is Milwaukee County Stadium.

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

I just realized that I have gone to so few MLB games the last 20 years that my number of active stadiums had dropped to 3: Washington, Seattle, and Boston.

I even missed one stadium's entire existence (Atlanta II).

Re: MLB Ballpark Roadtrips

Anybody have a good trip this year? I have none, so I am living vicariously. Once I win the lottery, I will re-visit NYC for the new parks.

Saw Citi for the first time. It's fine but nothing special unless you're a home fan.

Went to Oakland and San Francisco earlier in the year. Been to both before. Absolutely love AT&T Park. Oakland is meh, but at least I got to see a no-hitter. Heading to Tampa later in the summer. My expectations for the Trop are very low.
