MLB 2026: The dying of the light

There are five teams in the AL with a positive run differential. They are:

1. +133, 4 seed
2. +81, 5 seed
3. +59, 11 games under .500 and 6.5 gb of playoffs.
4. +58, 1 seed
5. +35, 2 seed

Per wiki, through September 10th, the Pirates were 10,984-10,983 all time. Toronto is only two games under .500, but only 7800 games played.

Given the last thirty years of the Pirates, they must’ve had a heck of a winning percentage thru the mid 90s.

I mean, we all know the answer to that question. There’s only one team that hasn’t been to a World Series, the Angels even have a title. As much as we love them Kep the Mariners are the obvious answer to the “most mediocre team”.
 
I'd like to see a comparison of variance to make it formal.

If we can trust Gemini, here are the season winning percentage variances since 1966:

Highest Variance
  • Miami Marlins: 0.0076
  • Detroit Tigers: 0.0069
  • Baltimore Orioles: 0.0064
Lowest Variance
  • St. Louis Cardinals: 0.0022
  • Los Angeles Angels: 0.0023
  • Colorado Rockies: 0.0024

So the Cardinals are the most consistent team, but the results cluster around the positive. The Angels do indeed appear to be statistically the most mediocre MLB team.

Highest Variance
  • Baltimore Orioles: 0.0064, .472
  • Atlanta Braves: 0.0062, .502
  • Philadelphia Phillies: 0.0061, .473
Lowest Variance
  • Los Angeles Angels: 0.0023, .499
  • St. Louis Cardinals: 0.0022, .520
  • New York Yankees: 0.0021, .567

Those Mets players should change their names to Kelli Stafford.
 
Long time Mets radio PBP Howie Rose just announced his last game. Terrific voice for the team. Old style announcer with no bullshit. The idea of a dugout interview appalled him.
