MLB 2020: A New Hope

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

There is no way in Hell that the NL East is going to be that competitive, and I can't see the AL Central being that lopsided, despite the Twins additions.

I do fear they have accurately predicted the NL Central, right down to the winner barely being above .500. Is it possible for the winner to be *below* .500?

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

We almost did it because of course we did.

And to prove what a crapshoot short series are, we then beat the Reds and led the A's 3-2 with Seaver and Matlack going to the hill.

St Louis actually won the Series after only winning 83 games in 2006. They had to beat... ahem ... a Mets team that finished 16 games better than them (and was 4-2 against them during the regular season) to get to the Series.

Believe me, I know. The genesis of the #blamebeltran meme on Amazin' Ave.

They’re about 10 games too optimistic on the Tigers. They’re not improving 22 games by signing Schoop, Cron and Nova.

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

Is Baltimore still fielding a major league team or did they drop down to AAA? 63 wins? Think I'll take the under on that one.

One of only two teams to get a straight zero in both raw and adjusted playoff percentage.

I like that they're projected above the Royals, but even KC has playoff hopes (0.1%) while the Tigers have none.

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

My wife and I were in Vegas a couple weekends back for the Fortress Tournament since Cornell was there. We were in the MGM Signature so we walked a lot through the MGM Grand to get to other places. They had a kiosk where Pete Rose was signing autographs. Note this wasn't on the actual casino floor, this way waaaaay off of it where there were just a couple gift shops and a some fast food spots. Like, one of the very empty parts of the whole complex. And they still had a guy out in the walkway trying to get people to (I'm assuming) pay for autographs and I didn't see anyone in there the whole weekend. But that's what happened when you violate the basic integrity of the sport.

It's a mall-like section between casinos with a bunch of shops and restaurants. That's actually not a bad memorabilia store that he's in. I visit Vegas about every year, and always see him there when I cut through this section during the daytime.

The Tigers are still going to be very bad this year, but this should be the last of the really hideous years. After this year, the only money on the books is Miggy through 2023. They can start adding next winter. They've got young pitching coming out of their ears, but not many bats at all in the farm system. The good news is, it's much cheaper to buy a bat than an arm.

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

You know what, after the initial scoffing I'm all for the adoption of expanded playoff teams. But if and only if the DH is abolished.

I'm all for 32. I like powers of 2.

Of course, I would also be OK returning the league to 1968.

Or 1948 if we swap the Braves with the Mets.

I'm okay with expanded playoffs if the season cuts back. 150 games sound right? Maybe 140?

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

Move the Dodgers back to Brooklyn and my father would be thrilled with this.

Yankees in the Bronx, Giants in Manhattan, Dodgers in Brooklyn, Mets in Queens. And most important, no MLB west of St. Louis. Make the PCL Great Again.

Staten Island can root for the Phillies. They should be in New Jersey anyway.

I'm surprised there has been no ML team in CT since IIRC Hartford in the 19th C. (fun fact: Mark Twain's favorite team).

I think the league is absolutely ready for expansion of teams and (slightly) playoff teams. While I don't like the idea of a 100+ win team getting stopped in a 1-game playoff by a mediocre team with a terrific pitcher, I feel like a 3-game series would alleviate that.

My idea:
  • Add two teams (Vegas? Portland? I dunno)
  • Even out the divisions
  • No more unbalanced schedule
  • 6 playoff teams per league
  • Put the DH in the national league and tell the old farts to **** off
  • 154 game season so we don't take the playoffs halfway into November

Playoff format:
  • Copy the NFL - it's the one thing they do right
  • Top two teams get a bye
  • Remaining 4 play best-of-3 series
  • Reseed second round, and the rest of the playoffs are best-of-7

Re: MLB 2020: A New Hope

As the resident promoter of All Things Portland I do not recommend baseball in Portland. It isn't a baseball city. Portland is a soccer town in the summer and a hockey town in the winter (indeed Portland should have gotten the N instead of Seattle -- the comparative WHL support is far stronger for Portland, and we are farther from Vancouver).

Quite frankly Portlanders have better things to do in the summer than watch baseball. A domed stadium would be an eyesore and not fit in with the local ethos or culture. It's just a bad idea.

To me the obvious places for baseball are Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Even Albuquerque before Portland. Phoenix is getting so huge a second team will eventually be viable (say, Tempe, or maybe Glendale though Glendale sucks).
