MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

Re: MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

I’ll miss the double switches, but the writing has been on the wall for awhile. WBC, all star game, and upcoming roster expansion were all pointing towards it.

Plus, if I’m remembering the ESPN segment from years ago correctly, the only reason the NL doesn’t have it is because a rep from the Pirates or Cardinals didn’t show up to the meeting and it counted as a no vote rather than abstention and blocked it from passing.

Huh, this from an AL fan. And a young one. I did not expect that -- bravo!

I've always loved the idea that managers have to get more creative than "Old fat BSD hitter in for the pitcher"

There are only two pro leagues anywhere in the world at any level which has no DH -- the NL and some league (not the top one) in Japan.

Re: MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

Because we're right and everyone else is wrong.

Yes. As a fan whose team has been in BOTH leagues, I like the NL better. I don't want to go back to the DH.

Firstly, that's a bad argument. The DH could suck and still be more profitable for the as-sholes who run baseball. Frequency has nothing to do with quality -- just profit margin.

Secondly, it's also a disingenuous argument. The DH is only adopted by feeder leagues to max out their usefulness to produce a ML-ready product. It was adopted below the ML level for utterly cynical reasons.

The DH is a stain on moral and aesthetic history but, quite independent of that, it also makes baseball boring and stupid. The DH is something Dump would think up. It has all his hallmarks: it's hamfisted, loud, inane, and grotesque. A few numbnuts defend it because they grew up with their team using it and durr go team go durr. These are the equivalent of people who still believe in Supply Side. F-ck the DH, f-ck the media, f-ck the owners, and f-ck the PA for taking something I once found beautiful and debasing it down to the LCD level of the masses. The DH can DIAF.

Ahem. Thank you.

Let us get rid of middle relievers and closers while we're at it.

Counter point.

I was merely stating a fact. It was not meant as an argument for or against the DH, nor, as you say, does it take into account quantity vs. quality. But thank you for turning that fact into that argument. LOL

I'm not really busting on you. But for the record, I am for the DH for various reasons. And that fact does say something -- pitchers are never taught to hit anymore. So, why bother pretending anymore? The ship has sailed a long, long time ago. Deal with it and move on with your life. :D

America became a Plutocratic security state a long time ago. I'm not accepting that, either.

Better to die on your feet at the plate than live on your knees like a useless baby while your batting butler wipes your as-s for you.

Also, this rebuts anything anybody has ever said in favor the DH. It is the Hegelian refutation of this issue. The case is closed.

If we get rid of DH, then let's go all the way to keep tradition and have pitchers pitch all 9 (+) innings.

Said no one ever.

But thank you for playing.

Reductio ad absurdum is advanced. Leave it to mookie and uno, they're the only ones here who can pull it off.

Stick to fart jokes. A man must know his limits.

Back at the adult table, I'm very pleased with the 3 batter limit ML has adopted -- as far as I can remember it's the only change for the better baseball has adopted since 1970 -- but I would give it up for the consignment of the DH to the ash heap of history.

We're almost done with the Boomers. We have almost flushed that consumerist narcissist mindset out. Just wait a few more years and we'll again have a majority of people who respect tradition, and themselves, and quiet and thoughtful things. These things go in cycles. The Great Wave of Stupidity, 1965-2025, is almost past. Just wait a tiny bit longer and we will have survived with some of our culture intact from EvilCorp.

That’s a non sequitur.

The DH is a change in rules to let old fat guys extend their careers and because America has an obsession with making all sports scores look more like football or even basketball scores.

Pitchers not going nine innings was never a rules change. It just became obvious that a substitution was used more. It wasn’t a tradition, it was just the way they played within the confines of the rules.

Exactly, and this is why I cited the three-batter rule as an analogy for the DH. It is a (far less radical) formal rule change that interferes with the game. And it's why, in order not to be a hypocrite, I'd give it up, even though I love it, to sweep away all such rule changes.

You'd think expanded rosters at least would help sustain getting rid of the DH. Yes, some dinosaurs will have to retire a bit earlier, but having more options on the bench might sooth some GMs into agreeing to drop it.

I haven't watched a lot of NL baseball that wasn't interleague/WS home games since the 80's, but I would be more than ok with getting rid of the DH.

Re: MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

Lets clarify. ALL rules interfere with the game. Thats the job of rules.

There are differences between rules of basic structure and rules of execution.

4 balls is a walk (it used to be 3) is a rule of execution. The fact that you can walk is a rule of basic structure. In the example of the batter minimum, the fact that you must pitch to n batters is a rule of basic structure. I guess that means the new floor of 3 is really a rule of execution, because previously it was 1 (i.e., if you brought in a reliever and they pinch hit you couldn't just bring in another reliever, you had to face one man).

I was desperately hoping this would be the trade: the owners agree to add a slot, the PA agrees to kill the DH. But it looks like the owners just aren't invested in killing the DH, so it's not an effective bargaining chip. Instead we'll have the DH grow like a cancer and there will be no trade off. It sucks.
