MLB 2017: Playoffs, World Series, and Off-season.

Re: MLB 2017: Playoffs, World Series, and Off-season.

And about 2.5 hours, and only in the 5th. Ugh

Game one was just a tease.

LA with the body language and look of the team that lost 16 of 17 and not the team that won 104 games. They also seem to be saying the things they were saying during the losing streak. If you don't recognize that playoff baseball -- even with 3 rounds and a wild-card game -- is a very different animal than regular season baseball you have little chance of winning. I'm thinking Astros in 5.

Isn't AGon back with the team? That man is a dark cloud.

Gurriel suspended 5 regular season games for his Darvish impression.

BS. Should have been 2 WS games (or more). Hit him where it hurts.

Re: MLB 2017: Playoffs, World Series, and Off-season.

The rationale appears to be he would just appeal and run the clock out.

Ridiculous rationale. If the offense warranted a suspension the suspension should happen before 6 months have passed. All of the parties to an appeal are almost certainly in Houston. The appeal could have been heard today and they could have issued a ruling on Sunday. MLB really doesn't care about getting rid of the racism, or they would say this is important enough to hit an offender where it hurts, by truly doing something that has an impact. Suspending him next year and leaving him with 157 regular season games left will have the same impact all of the other suspensions for similar racist and bigoted gestures or comments have had: absolutely none. Players know this. I would have given him 2 games. If the Astros still win, great, if not, maybe fans and other players realize MLB means business when they say "keep your bigotry to yourself."

Re: MLB 2017: Playoffs, World Series, and Off-season.

I'm not sure how the appeals process officially works or if there is a way to speed it up. It might be spelled out in the CBA that a certain timeline has to be followed. It always seems like guys get to play another three or four days before their suspension finally kicks in.

What he said. There are guidelines/rules spelled out in the CBA.

The Agreement has special and separate provisions for disciplines involving suspensions and disciplines involving conduct during the playoffs. MLB would be well within rights under the Agreement to have suspended Gurriel for today's game or any amount of games during the Series. Gurriel would then have the right to appeal this decision within 7 days. In the event MLB has done this, one would think Gurriel would have appealed and all of the people likely needed for the hearing are in Houston or could be quite quickly. If not, a tele-conference is acceptable and an in-person hearing can only be demanded by a player for a suspension longer than 5 games. Suspensions for on-field conduct during the post season that are appealed are heard by either the Commissioner or the Special Assistant to the Commissioner within 48 hours and his ruling shall constitute the full, final and complete disposition of the complaint and shall have the same effect as a grievance decision of an arbitrator, or in the case of the MLB/MLBPA Agreement, the Arbitration Panel. A decision is rendered as soon as is practicable. He could have been suspended today, had a hearing today, and received a decision today.

Yeah, the MLB chickened out. Or maybe they didn’t want to look like they were trying to influence the Series for something that’s behavioral and not impacting the integrity of the game.
