MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Michael Cuddyer retires effective immediately.

Holy sh-t.

I hope he isn't seriously ill. He walks away from $12M. Great news for the Mets' budget but I hope there isn't a deeper, sadder story here.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Didn't Cuddyer have concussion issues once upon a time? I knew Justin Morneau did, but it seems like Cuddyer had them as well.

Pretty sure every major player on the Twins post Torii Hunter (first edition) has had them. Like a tradition.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

At over $180 mil, this is the 2nd largest contract ever given to an outfielder, behind Giancarlo Stanton (MLB Network).

Yes he did. Lots of arm/shoulder/wrist issues the last couple seasons though.

Great guy. And what a cannon of an arm. I'll always fondly remember him gunning down runners trying to go first to third.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Reading the article on ESPN, it sounds like his 15 years in the majors have taken its toll on his body. He's been on the DL six times in the past four seasons. They also make it sound like the Mets bought out the last year of his deal.

Manfred declines to lift the Rose ban.

I'm sort of torn on how I feel about this, although I guess I probably lean slightly toward disappointment with this decision.

I get it, he made a pretty big error in judgement and what not, and maybe deciding to reinstate him (and thus likely grant HOF entry) could become a can of worms with the Steroid Club down the road.

IMO, I feel he's done his time, and ending the ban really isn't going to be a major issue. Kind of a shame.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

No. He knew the punishment for what he did when he did it. It was in place for 40+ years before he came to the majors. Bet on your own team? Lifetime banishment. Cut and dried. Now, the HOF, take that up with the BBWAA. They're the gatekeepers.

There's evidence that he bet on the Reds in 1985. A season where he had 501 plate appearances, and managed. That's a problem.

The fact that he's continuously lied about it (and lied about lying about it) and does not take his transgression seriously seals it for me. At least show some remorse (if not honesty). There was never any point, during his entire career, that he did NOT know the punishment. He just didn't think it would apply to him.

This, especially the first part.

I know we've beaten this to death, and we're going to beat it to death again. But...

1) He insisted that he never bet on baseball
2) He later admitted that he bet on baseball, and he only admitted it when he had a book to sell
3) He never bet on the Reds, never bet as a player
4) It comes out that the courts have sealed evidence that he bet on the Reds while he was a full-time player
5) He has stated that he never bet on his team to lose
6)......

Also keep in mind that he was six-figures deep into the mafia with his betting. You're not going to stiff the mob on your bet. Go out to Youtube and watch Michael Franzese. I'll give you one good guess as to how he paid the mob back.

I think we all know which shoe is going to drop next. It's just a matter of when.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

On the Rose topic.

The Hall of Fame came up with its rule that players on the ineligible list can not be enshrined 9 months before Rose was to be eligible for a vote. So it was the "Rose Rule". They did not need a rule to know that they shouldn't vote for "Shoeless Joe" Jackson and other players accused of gambling. I am not really a fan of how that came about. I would allow Rose to be voted on and see where he falls. Although at this point he would likely go to a committee and not to the general vote.

As far as his banishment for Baseball, I have no issue with him not being reinstated. He didn't even admit to gambling until 2004, and that was for his book. He also still gambles on baseball to this day. It doesn't matter if its legal, he is the one person who shouldn't be betting. He has a problem. The other issues he has with lying have been listed previously.

On the possibly hypocrisy of baseball, I am still working out how I feel about that. I don't think that partnering with gambling sites like FanDuel/DraftKings which are for fans of the game is a contradiction of its stance on gambling for players/officials. It may give a bad look on the surface, but fans gambling doesn't affect the integrity of the game.

I also don't think the PED issue is an equivalent as it is a fairly new to the sport. There are bans in place for PED users now and they are well defined. Also, collective bargaining didn't start until the 1960's. So the rules prior to that were created by the league without oversight. I would guess that if PED's existed prior to the CBA, it too would be a lifetime ban.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

I differentiate gambling and PED's on two points:

1) As you mentioned, the rules and punishments were clear-cut on gambling. Not so on PED's.

2) You would think that those that are juicing are trying to compete and win. Cheating? Absolutely. But still trying to win. However, once you start inviting those who are involved in the competition to gamble, no one can be sure that what we're watching is real competition, and not pre-determined. THAT'S the big problem with the gambling.

I suppose we're debating between the Ace of Spades of cheating, and the King of Hearts. Both rank up there pretty high on the list.

Pete has no self awareness. He will have a press conference, statement, or what have you today... from Las Vegas.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Just a lot of disconnected thoughts out of Pete to this point.

He probably should have had a script.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Todd Frazier to the White Sox in a 3-team trade. No other big MLB names moving between the teams (Reds, Dodgers).
