MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

But then you get teams like KC winning titles and then you get the "the system works" crowd.
Sadly the one offs "prove" the system is fine.

My point exactly. Also see: the FLA "make a run, then fire sale" method.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

these guys are getting paid because the owners can afford it. the teams that don't spend are pocketing that cash (through tv dollars and payroll tax on the spenders). don't get mad at the teams that are spending their money.

This. The game is awash in money now. The TV money is larger than ever (for now) and attendance is at or near all-time highs. The days where teams consider 2 million in attendance a "good year" are gone. The reason teams don't win is because of their front office decision, whether those decisions are made by the owner or the GM.

As for the long-term contracts, we talked about that last night. Those chickens will come home to roost.

Regarding the BIG-MARKET TEAMS!!! signing ALL THE FREE AGENTS!! and winning ALL THE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!...nonsense. The Yankees have won exactly 1 world championship in 15 seasons. The Dodgers haven't won since 1988, and the Mets are still looking at 1986. The White Sox have been to two World Series since 1959. Houston has seen one WS ever. The Red Sox won their three due to better front office management. Meanwhile, the Giants have three championships, and the Cardinals, who rarely go big in free agency, have a couple as well.

Front office management is what wins championships when everybody has money. Ask Daniel Snyder and the Washington Redskins about that.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Kris Bryant files a service time grievance. Because he had 171 days in the majors instead of 172, he won't be a free agent until 2021.

Hahaha. And that was EXACTLY why the Cubs sent him to the minors to start last season, just to keep him under contract for an extra year.

Hilarious. Are things not going well that he wants to get out/get paid?

Calm down, Hawk Harrelson. He's got Boras for an agent. This is like when a parent sues their kid but it's really just the insurance companies fighting.

And IIRC, the Cubs came under a LOT of fire for it.....

Meh, only from the usual suspects. Because anyone with a brain knows that wherever you put the service time cutoff, teams will game it.

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Mikel Franco of Philles is also filing a grievance.

This is only something that be changed in the courts or the CBA. So players are basically forced to go this route.

Ben Zobrist to the Cubs, Starling Castro to the Yankees.

Oh. Right. Forgot about that. I take back the love lost snark at the end of my post.

But the laughter at the gaming of the service days stands though. :D

Re: MLB 2015-16: Grays Sports Almanac Edition

Trade: Braves send Shelby Miller to the D-Backs in return for prospects.

At this point, they just need to finish off the implosion and move Freddie Freeman. He's now stuck on the island of misfit toys... errr... on the roster of misfit players, and thanks to the fan backlash will be stuck there.

The three cornerstones of the franchise were to be Freeman, Kimbrel, and Heyward in the move to SunTrust Park, with Simmons being a highlight reel maker on his own. Now, only Freeman remains.
