This smells a lot like the disastrous Adrian Beltre deal for the Ms.
Seems much worse to me. Beltre was only 25 and coming off a season where he was the best player in baseball (non-Barry Bonds division), with 48 dingers to go with stellar defense at third. He never hit quite THAT well for Seattle, but he was still a useful player, if a bit overpaid, thanks to continued solid defense even when his bat wasn't really what they hoped for. Cruz is 34 and plays the corner outfield poorly, and probably should be a DH. Giving him four expensive years is ludicrous.

Plus, Beltre had some good years subsequent to Seattle. I know many Red Sox fans who wish he was still here.

It looks like the Red Sox are out on Jon Lester. In the least surprising news of the winter meetings: Yankees are reportedly getting into the Lester sweepstakes. The winner of a bidding war between the Steinbrenners and Magic will be Jon Lester. I would no longer be surprised to see him north of $175M - maybe approaching 200M.

Giants are out. Now it's Theo vs. Larry Round 666.

For those of you old enough, or a Bond fan, the bidding process reminds me of the auction scene in the 1967 version of Casino Royale.

So the Red Sox essentially traded Jon Lester and two prospects to Detroit for Rick Porcello and a pitching prospect. What a bargain!

Porcello is younger (meaning less risk of injury), cheaper, and almost as good.

Ben just said he would have been happy to trade Lester for Porcello straight up in July.

Dry that one out and you can fertilize the lawn. Check out #smearcampaign on twitter for a taste of what is to come.
