MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Somebody help me out here. Let's say the AL playoff standings finish as is:

1. Texas
2. New York
3. Detroit
4. Baltimore
5. Oakland

Oakland beats Baltimore in the playoff. Do they play Texas or New York? Seems to me like the #1 seed should get to play the team that just had to play in a playoff regardless of the fact that Texas and Oakland are in the same division.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

I believe it would be Oakland vs. Texas. I think they did away with the "no playing in same division" rule this year, too.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Very good. I'll enjoy seeing the Tigers eliminate the Yankees yet again.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

I'd prefer the Tigers fix their own issues before addressing anyone else.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

oh Mark Ellis.

Texas and Oakland today at 3:30 eastern for the AL West crown. Been an exciting series so far.

Ben Sheets is pitching for the Braves tonight, <a href="http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2012/10/02/braves-sheets-to-start-wednesday-then-plans-to-retire/">then calling it quits</a>.

Rooting for (in order): Anybody who plays St. Louis; A's, O's, Nats, Tigers, Giants.

The only team I would lose sleep over if they won is St. Louis. I'd rather see the Yankees win. Not that I am bitter or anything. Not at all. :)

You don't like the Orioles and Nationals? I don't think I have heard this before.

Oh wait I read that wrong. You do like them. oops. Everyone knows you hate St. Louis. ;)

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

If Baltimore and NYY finish tied for the division (unlikely with DiceK pitching for the Sox) do they play a playoff game to determine the division winner? Or is that not necessary because both teams qualified for the playoffs anyway?

they play a game to determine who wins the division (game would be in baltimore), because winning the division keeps you out of the 1 game wildcard playoffs.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

A 1 game playoff to stay out of a 1 game playoff. Makes sense. :D
I don't know what baltimore would prefer? 1 game against the yankees in baltimore with a chance to play 1 game in texas or oakland...or just 1 game in texas or oakland...

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

I blame the Twins for the playoff expansion. All those 1-game playoffs to decide the AL Central got the commish to thinking.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

I love the expansion of playoffs as they are now...puts the emphasis back on winning the division.

I still think that they should reduce the number of regular season games back down to 155 and add an extra playoff round. Not this one game crap. Remove around 100 meaningless games from the schedule and add a week of meaning baseball. (plus, it would have stopped me from watching this horrible Red Sox team any longer. Who am I kidding, I wasn't watching anyway. They're still my team but ownership has to go)

EDIT: Make it like football with the 6 teams but give two of them a first round bye. That would make it worth winning the division.

You'd be hurting the teams winning their division. Too much time off would cause havoc to everybody on the team. Maybe you could get away with a 3-game series, but they'd have to be day after day, meaning no time for the Game 163s that are going to show up and no travel days, either.

I'm all for 150 or 155 or however many games gets a balanced schedule, but I can't advocate a 6-team per league playoff (As many wild cards as division winners? No thank you.) or anything more than a one-game playoff for the pre-LDSs.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

after falling behind 5-1 in the 3rd inning, Oakland leads 7-5 in the 5th.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

If each league adds one more team, we can go to 4 divisions of 4 and then just the winners play. The caveat it that in September, you only play your division which, in theory, means that no club is out of it with 27 (or so) games in the division.

That would be good. Wildcards are from the devil.

Portland and Vegas can round out the 32.
