MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Mariano Rivera done for the year (and possibly forever) after tearing his ACL snagging fly balls during batting practice.

Finally! Not happy he's hurt. Just happy he's not pitching against us anymore.
I have no problem being happy that a Yankee is hurt. They're one of the teams on my "cheer for injuries list", along with teams such as the Red Wings, Michigan and Denver.

That's cold. The only injury I could root for in sports would be to Boston Fan.

I really, really hope that Mo can rehab and come back for next season, but he's been non-committal about it so far. I would hate to see him have to retire and it not be on his terms.

The Red Sox fans are devastated Mo got hurt. The Sox couldn't have won the 2004 World Series without him!

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

A few years back, one of baseball's numbers geeks analyzed the productivity of closers. I forget the exact conclusion, but it was something on the order of 6-7 seasons on the upper end. After that, you invariably start see diminishing returns. The probability of a closer remaining productive several seasons past that dropped exponentially, becoming vanishingly small after about 10 years.

Rivera was a great closer even before he was a great closer (Wetteland era), which takes you back nearly 20 years. I doubt that I'll live long enough to see someone do it better.

Cheers, Mo. You bastid. :p

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Rivera: "I'm coming back. Write it down in big letters. I'm not going out like this."

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

I can't tell you how funny that is living here in the land of "Bryce Harper -- First or second ballot Hall of Fame?" :)

In other news, everybody's two favorite fan bases class it up for the cameras:

that fall is amazing. between the soda and the popcorn, she is wearing like $15 worth of concessions by the end of it

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Actually, I think he was suspended for saying that he hit Harper on purpose. Had he kept his mouth shut, nothing would have come of it.

I thought Harper came off sounding like dbag when he was going through the draft and signing process. So i'm all for someone plunking him with a fastball.

He did, but he sure handled that situation well.
