Ah, but you forgot the footnote that says if you add in enough at-bats to meet the 502, the player can still win the batting title.

If he has bonuses in his contract for winning the title, you can be ****ed sure the MLBPA will fight that.

I don't think it's a choice. They add the PA as an 0-for-1 (n his case), and if he's still better than McCutchen (or whoever), the rule says he wins it. Just read a book that discussed Andres Galarraga's batting title during the first year of the Rockies (he ended up having enough PAs by just a couple). I assume it's not different because he's suspended rather than injured.
