Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

A friend of mine said that recently (maybe a year or two ago?) ATL had EIGHT plows for the whole metro. EIGHT. As in more than seven, but less than nine.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Is it worth it for them to get more trucks for a unusual snowfall? I don't know often this occurs but it doesn't seem like they feel it's often enough to put more money into it.

Given recent weather (as in the past few years, not a couple), yes. It's a one-time cost if you don't use them. But then this happens, it's SO worth it.

They should have at least five more.

Sounds right; from what I gathered during the press conference last night, the increase in trucks happened within the last year. The mayor of ATL was discussing their removal equipment, and at one point my wife looked at me and went "wait, did he just *brag* that they have a couple 4x4 pickup trucks with plows?"

I understand that it's not worth the expense for trucks to sit unused, but how hard is it to have attachments available to fit onto existing equipment? I recall my hometown road commission used to have salt/sand spreaders just laying in the yard over the summer until it came time to put them onto the back of the dump trucks. Maybe even water trucks from summer road construction could be filled with liquid brine for use in winter? Even just having sand stockpiles available to put on the roads would have been a help.

Hell, like them Georgia boys really need the excuse of snow to go get themselves a truck??

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Snowy and slow commute this morning. I'm lucky I can take backroads to work. While it saved me time things still backed up at lights. My snow tires made it great because I avoided a jam up. I took some snowy side roads and navigated up a hill that I know my old tires couldn't have handled.

"We're having a heat wave..."

Saw an interesting sight this morning. Temperature / time clock:

12[SUP]o[/SUP] F

-12[SUP]o[/SUP] C

Nice symmetry.

Copied this from my post on GPL:

I've never seen this before, but I left home and got on the highway behind a plow with a tank of water on a trailer. I then watched as the plow moved the trailer into the right lane and the plow stayed in the left. The trailer had a plow along the entire right side of it. It plowed both lanes on 694 at the same time. It wasn't down to the pavement completely, but enough to drive safely on. The axles on the trailer pivoted and the trailer arm was rigid and actuated. Very cool!

Sounds like a form of Echelon plowing. Did it look like the tiny photo on the left of this site? http://www.mrdc.ca/inside/jpage/1/p/echelonplowing/content.do

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

And it's a great morning for my snow blower to die!

I've got my handy PDF spec sheet up, but who knows. This stuff doesn't come naturally to me. My dad would probably look at it, hit it with the little sledgehammer, and tada off it goes. I'll be nerdily removing and inspecting spark plugs unnecessarily for hours.

Very similar. I've always loved echelon plowing. Cool to watch five or six plows in formation just destroying the snow. It's cool to see they can do an ok job in the middle of the storm with a single plow for an entire two-lane highway.

OK, I have been seeing these threads for several years now, and I sometimes read them. I have one question, "What do you mean by 'arguing' in the title?" I see a lot of discussing but no arguing. Arguing is what I have been particpating in on the RPI and Union threads for the last week. :D

Read this page through the last page for just a sample:

It gets especially interesting around January 6th and last week when the school closings start because of the cold.

Its something I threw into the original title when there was a lot of Minnesotans having a heated discussion about the current weather they was having. Figured it would keep it out of the Lodge. ;)

As Biddco wrote it is a lot of what is or did happen here, not arguing. :D

Now that makes sense.

Like most things, it was better back in the day... The current thread has nothing on the "Hey Duluth/Superior" thread :p
