Kinda tempted to put this in the Nice Planet thread, but I thought it would work to point and laugh at all of the FIP's here because they didn't get a snowday.

University Of Illinois Students whine about not getting a snow day.

Cripes! If you don't have one decent pair of long johns, a couple of oversized hoodies and sweat pants, and at least one pair of decent boots to wear on a 10 minute hike across campus, then what the hell are you doing in college in a cold weather climate? Honestly, have the gear to Deal With It! :cool:

If it makes you guys feel better, it's 43 in Anchorage. I wore a sweatshirt and jeans to work today.

I'm sorry, but 0 degF with only -20 windchills are not enough to cancel school.

The reason the U of M cancelled classes was because of the dangerous travel conditions created by temperatures this low. And there are TONS of communters to the U. Probably the vast majority of the 60,000+ that may be on campus during the day. It has nothing to do with exposure issues. Our primary schools are closed because of exposure issues.

Well if you have the media telling you that any weather other than 70*F and 5-10mph winds is a Murder-Death-Kill Storm situation, sheeple are bound to begin believing it eventually...

Had a job interview in downtown Chicago yesterday... Had a 15-20 minute walk from the "L" to the interview... Managed to survive that... Face was a bit cold, but nothing terrible... Our country has become a bunch of kitties :mad:

Yeah, on Sunday it was 66 and cloudy and as I walked the beach/surf on Sanibel, my fingers and toes got a bit numbish. Had to use the heater in my rental to warm them back up.

Was gorgeous yesterday and today though. Took a dip in the outdoor pool at 8:30 tonight - which will be the last time I do that for several months.


Back to Wisconsin tomorrow...

Apparently, Atlanta was buried and beaten to a completely frozen standstill... by... wait for it... 4 inches of snow. :rolleyes:


My flight through there was cancelled between me leaving the hotel and getting to the airport. Luckily, I was able to get a direct on another airline that will get me home at essentially the same time. Gotta sit here for 3 hours now though.

It's astounding what is happening in Atlanta...the freeways are at a standstill. People are sleeping inside their cars and department stores. How does that happen?

Yesterday I went out at lunch and even though it was 4 degrees, it was sunny and calm. It felt downright tropical. I actually stood out there and soaked up the sun for awhile.

I have a friend that moved to North Carolina last year (lived in NoDak for 20) and she's trying to defend the drivers down there by saying we'd be the same way if we didn't have so many plows and salted the roads...they got 2 inches.

You got to remember, down there, a "significant" snow is a every couple of years type of thing... They don't own brushes/scrapers to clear their cars... They don't have a fleet of plows/salt trucks... When on the road, people don't know how to deal with the slick conditions...

It's downright scary to drive in the South when conditions are like this... Sure, I have a clue in how to handle it... Unfortunately, the other 49435 people on the road are clueless... Things just snowball because of that fact...

I will give them that without salt the roads could become one big ice sheet. And if you haven't driven in that before....chaos. Its still funny though

I watched a bit of the ATL news online last night, they had a press conference with the ATL Mayor, Governor, and the head of GaDOT. All three were so proud that the metro area had "much more equipment on hand for this" than they did in 2011. They had 40 snow plow/salt trucks. For a metro population of at least 4 million. 40.

The City of Chicago DOT alone has a minimum 250 dedicated plow trucks, and over 400 Streets and Sanitation trucks can be outfitted with plows if needed. Yes, Chicago is expected to have that much, but how, with ATL receiving these storms with slightly more frequency, not even prepared to emergency retrofit garbage trucks or other municipal vehicles? They didn't have sand from quarries available that they could purchase and spread in lieu of salt? Couldn't get some graders on the highway to move the slush off the road? Echelon plowing might be a little too advanced for them with their limited equipment.

Then they went on to admit they *ed up by telling everyone to get on the road and get home. That put a good portion of that 4 million metro on the highway at the exact same time. Whoever ignored the guy who said "This isn't a good idea," needs to be fired.

Then the GaDOT head said that he had re-located manpower and equipment to other areas in the state that were "forecast" to have the worst of the storm and were struggling to get them back into the metro area.



What's bound to happen: nothing. GaDOT will maintain that they don't need additional equipment that will just sit unused except for the once a year storm. The politicians that allowed the perfect storm of having EVERYONE on the road will get re-elected.

And we can laugh at them next January when they get another storm like this.

I've heard stories about the GaDOT through a few previous projects with them (before my time) at work. Not good stories. From what I hear, there is a great deal of incompetence to go around.
