Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Looks like we are getting some of your weather now, -2 this morning. This is the coldest winter in Maine since 1983, colder than the 30 yr average, my woodpile is shrinking rapidly. The good thing is the heating season is 1/3 over and we've gained 3 minutes of daylight :)

Is the snow squeaky?

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I don't know what it is about the snow that fell yesterday, but it seems to be much slicker than normal snow. Yes, I know that it's too cold for the chemicals to be effective at melting the roads clean, but I've seen more spin outs this morning (and last night) than I've seen in past snowfalls with low temps like these. I started slipping last night while driving worse than I've slipped around in a long time, and I was not going fast at all.

Count in the ditch today: 2 SUVs, 3 sedans.

I was very careful this morning but did need to slow a bit for my exit ramp and just touched the brake while on an overpass. Felt it slide a bit and let back off till I was off the bridge deck then slowed for the ramp. I can see if I was in a lesser handling car (mine's a Subaru) or being less careful I could have been in a ditch.

And my 30 minute commute last night took 70 minutes.

Don't tap your brakes on a bridge? ;)

We used to drive from LaCrosse up to Winona and there are lots of bridges. I remember one trip when the conditions were just right and we shimmy-shaking on each one. Being idiot college students, after a few, we were laughing on each one.

Did you ever cross the downtown bridge when it was slippery with hatching Mayflies?

No, but I know that's why they had to make it with a grated surface rather than solid asphalt.

I remember being downtown though on Mayfly night(s) and it was pretty wild.

Was camping up in Monticello when a swarm of Mayflies decided to die above us. It's pretty creepy when it starts raining dead insects.

I'm so tired of these excuses by MNDOT. They should have been out sanding the roads Sunday and Monday and they failed.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Best spinout of the day so far: In Eagan on Diffley, just west of 35E. Toyota Corolla up the hill in front of the tire shop.

My SUV was sliding around this morning on the north end of Eagan behind the Byerly's. That bridge was slick. Otherwise no other big problems.

Been out in the boat fishing a few times too. The boat is their only resting place on open water, so it's uncomfortable as they land all over everything.

We just head in as the fish gorge themselves on better food than our lures.

Sanding a road is only so effective. It's much better for intersections than, say, a straight stretch on a highway, which is really where I was seeing the problems. Being a conscientious driver is far better than any amount of sand. Add to that, sand doesn't dissolve to wash down the drain, it requires cleanup efforts in the spring, which means more budget.

I did see some trucks out last night sanding on Hwy 77; it's not like MnDOT was sitting on their thumbs.

I'm mostly just annoyed that it took TWO AND A HALF HOURS to get from Plymouth to Eagan yesterday afternoon. From 169 until Cedar Ave I was doing 5 mph. I was pretty surly by the time I got home.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Heading back from West Michigan to the Cities tomorrow. Looks like there will be some snow through Chicago, lets hope it doesn't slow us down too much.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Yeah! **** MNDOT for obeying the laws of physics!!!!!

How is sanding the roads breaking the laws of physics? Hell, even the old saw about "it's too cold for the chemicals to work" is BS. They may not work AS WELL, but the mix of magnesium chloride and sodium chloride I put on the ice on my sidewalk did melt through even while it never got above zero.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I wonder if schools will cancel or delay on Monday with how cold it will be. I'd guess not in the metro but definitely many school districts outside of the Cities could.

I might take a PTO day Monday, it depends if the forecast holds tomorrow. I really don't want to deal with the expected traffic of getting over the MN River bridge Monday. The fear of black ice seems to snarl traffic more than the actual thing on days like that.

As for the schools, when I was a kid most school districts would have had class, but that looks to have changed in the last 10-15 years. Apparently parents don't want to take the time to dress their children correctly for the truly cold weather days anymore.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I just remember the one day where the governor cancelled school in the whole state. That was great. I'm expecting school to be on, at least here in the Cities.

Cancelling school when it's -20? Wimp.
