Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Having driven both of the above in bad conditions (along with light rear end, rear wheel drive - the worst), I'll stick with the full time symmetrical all-wheel drive in my Subarus.

Those are great cars.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

I'll stick with my Ram. 4x4 cars still don't have the ground clearance, and get hung-up on burms and can't deal with more than like a foot of snow.

My Outback has 8.7" ground clearance which is likely less than your truck but more than most SUVs. My Imprezza is only a little over 6" though, but I can still go through most snow piles with no trouble.

Much less than his truck...I need a ladder to get into that thing...:D

I need more capability for off-road purposes, on the farm, for hunting, etc.

If I can get around in my car, which has no traction control or ABS, it is possible for dang near anyone.

Respect that, but I'll stick with my A4 Quattro. I look for something that emphasizes driving the metro area the other 350+ days.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Vehicles ending up in the ditch has a lot more to do with the driver than it does the vehicle. I'd say it's about 50/50 cars/SUV's. I do see more people with SUV's driving like morons in bad conditions than in cars though...

I'm sure most tow truck drivers will tell you, having 4 wheel drive just means you can get it stuck that much further into the ditch. I bet most of them laugh and smile at those commercials that show the SUV with the dial knob for the traction control system.

The better the tech, the more it allows the idiots to get stuck worse than others. If you're responsible and given better tech/equipment, then it will only make you that much safer.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

The other day I go out to my car, and the doors are frozen shut!

Fortunately, I remembered an old trick: when something is stuck, try moving it in the opposite direction. I shoved hard against the door, pushing it inward, which cracked the ice and let me open the door. Phew.

That happens all the time around here if your vehicle is left outside, especially when there's a rain/ice/snow mixture of precipitation that day.

The bank thermometer across the street said 9 degrees this morning. With the lack of wind downtown this morning, that felt really warm.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Looks like we're gonna get another 2-3 inches of snow tomorrow night... Not a big deal... But this will be the 3rd accumulating snowfall within a week... This will also mean we will have snow on the ground for Christmas... Yay! :D

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

How can you forget so many places in Michigan that get way more snow?

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

The thing with MN, is that usually we have a 120 degree swing in a calendar year. And you might have snow one week, and then 80 degrees the next. ;)

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

The weather did in my car battery this week. On Wednesday night, when getting to the park and ride after work, the engine barely turned over, just enough to start. It did the same today, so I declared it dying and replaced it. My only question is this: How in the last three years did batteries jump some 47% in price? That's a bit outside current inflation rates.

Re: Minnesotans Still Arguing About the Weather...

Some places in the CNY lake effect snowbelt saw a 5 to 6 foot dumping of snow the past couple days. Yes, that's 60-72 inches, confirmed. Going to be a long winter up there!
