Minnesota Women's Hockey 2025-26

With what’s going on in college football right now, it’s too tempting to take this a step further. Who are we thinking would be the top 3-5 names to watch if the Gopher job opens up?
There are three Gopher alums who are head coaches in the WCHA right now. The most established on that list is Nadine Muzerall at OSU, but would she even view it as a step up? Sure the facilities are better at the U but she's done a statue-worthy job with the Buckeyes and is in national title contention every year.

There's Bethany Brausen at St. Thomas and there's Mira Jalosuo at St. Cloud. Brausen is not only an alum but a former assistant (as Muzerall is), I think either would take the job if offered. I'd be more comfortable with Brausen, of the two.

Another option is elevating the current top assistant, Greg "Boom" May, who the current team seems to really like. Gun to my head, he is my preferred choice for continuity reasons, probably even over Muzzy, because I feel there is future upside on this team and in future recruiting classes I wouldn't want to mess with.

No Gopher alums on current PWHL staffs, if you're thinking that way.

I'm sure there will be some push for Natalie Darwitz, the exiled top assistant of a few years ago who also lost her PWHL job under similar circumstances.

Joel Johnson will probably never coach college hockey again if the rumors on this board of what caused his departure at UST have accuracy.

One bad weekend and suddenly 10 days of complete apathy in the thread. Now a home-and-home with the other purple squad, the last games before the winter break. Surely what just happened can't happen twice in a row. Still the #3 team in the country, for better or for worse.

The tunnelers had time off and it hasn't really helped. Another struggle today so far with mistakes all over the ice and not converting on their chances. Something is off with this program.

Oh and those vaunted landcows who the tunnelers were swept by? So far today down 3-0 in the first period to Cloudytown.

Minnesota was the better team today but man does this defense reek in their own end. Even with the horses they have. Not 56's best game either, though the numbers won't bear that out.

Blind squirrels use the sense of touch in their four paws to avoid concrete and asphalt.
That reminds me that their is a very good restaurant called Forepaughs in St. Paul that had closed down during covid, but reopened (in 2024). Lots of history in the place and excellent food to boot. And no, if you're wondering, they do not have squirrel on the menu.

Cool. You can be our resident expert on blind squirrels.

Speaking of which, the Gopher defenders looked a little like that when they allowed a goal on a 1-on-4. It wasn't like they were trying to stop a modern-day Hilary Knight, but if there isn't any commitment to staying between the attacker and the net and/or providing any backpressure, then the resume doesn't have to be as lofty. We can blame the goalie, but you aren't expecting to be alone with a shooter in that situation. And I do remember Clark denying what looked like a certain goal, so her glass wasn't all empty.

Any team that routinely allows three goals to middling WCHA teams isn't going to beat tOSU come March. Neither of the power teams in the conference have been displaying their usual defensive games through November, but the 2-1 score yesterday suggests that the coaches know that and are working to correct it. Weren't any 5-on-5 goals if the boxscore I saw can be trusted, and given it showed a 5-on-3 goal late in a period with only one penalty shown, I'm not claiming it should be. Meanwhile, UM will likely chalk its D struggles up to bad bounces or unkind calls. Don't see such a mindset working out in the long term.

If what was shown of #18 supposed 5 minute major, that was more of a reputation call. It was reviewed and not called live. I could see a two minute call for cross-checking but not five.

Anywho...tommy bahamas did nothing with it and trail 2-0 after 1 period.

I don't know if they ever found it to show on the video on BTN, but I went looking for it.

There's a faceoff in the Gopher zone with about 7:25 first period on the BTN scoreboard bug, and a few seconds later, at 7:19, Murphy hits the St Thomas player with her stick up into the "grill" of her helmet, pushing her head back visibly on that one camera view. "Live" I might not have noticed it, but the Tommie coaches obviously did.

(The problem with finding it is there's no stoppage for two minutes, before the Tommie coaches can issue their challenge.)
